There is a broad array of mercury species to which humans may be exposed. While exposure to methylmercury through fish consumption is widely recognized, the public is less aware of the sources and potential toxicity of inorganic forms of mercury. Some oral and laboratory thermometers, barometers, small batteries, thermostats, gas pressure regulators, light switches, dental amalgam fillings, cosmetic products, medications, cultural/religious practices, and gold mining all represent potential sources of exposure to inorganic forms of mercury. The route of exposure, the extent of absorption, the

There are many spectrums in renal diseases which induce tubulointerstitial nephropathy (TIN). Primarily, the renal tubule and interstitium are involved but glomerular and vascular lesions are found in the chronic course of TIN. Renal scintigraphy is poor for evaluating characteristic aspects of tubular function of TIN but demonstrate individual renal function as a whole. Particularly, measurement of the 99m-Tc-DMSA renal uptake rate is useful for evaluating a functioning tubular mass.

Lead (Pb) is recognized as one of the most prevalent metals found in the Earth's crust. Its affordability and easy accessibility have led to its extensive use in various industrial applications. Over recent decades, the global issue of heavy metal pollution has escalated, despite increased awareness. This situation is particularly concerning in developing nations, where Pb toxicity poses a significant threat to public health. A critical challenge in addressing Pb toxicity lies in its diagnosis, as it often presents asymptomatically, with many symptoms overlapping with other medical conditions.

INTRODUCTION: This case report describes a 65-year-old female patient from Germany who developed clinically significant lead poisoning following the use of Ayurvedic herbal preparations provided by an unlicensed practitioner in a major German city.
CASE PRESENTATION: Although the patient presented with nonspecific symptoms such as weight loss, fatigue, and gastrointestinal complaints - possible indicators of heavy metal toxicity - these warning signs were initially overlooked by the practitioner. It was only after a colleague at the same institute raised concerns that appropriate diagnostic i

Ganoderma lucidum is a hard, bitter mushroom with many ethnomedicinal uses, including conditions similar to lead (Pb) toxicity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effects of a G. lucidum aqueous extract (GL) when concurrently administered with Pb. Adult Wistar rats were administered oral doses of Pb (100 mg/kg) daily for 25 consecutive days. Of the Pb-treated rats, 3 groups received 100, 200, or 400 mg/kg/day GL, respectively; one group was given only 50 mg/kg/day 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA); and another group was given 400 mg/kg/day GL and 50 mg/kg/day DMSA. Body weig

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the efficacy of two antidotes, edetate calcium disodium (CaNa2EDTA) and dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), for the treatment of lead poisoning in adults.
METHODS: Thirty-seven patients with blood lead concentrations >40 μg/dL and positive CaNa2EDTA lead mobilization were randomized to receive 1050 mg/m2/day of oral DMSA (n = 21) or 500 mg/m2/day of intravenous CaNa2EDTA (n = 16) over two five-day courses separated by a 10-day rest period. Efficacy of treatment was evaluated by blood lead assays on the first day of the two courses and 14 days after the end of treatment an

The purpose of this study was to determine the potential benefits of combination therapy using dimercaptosuccinic acid modified iron oxide (DMSA-Fe3O4) magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) combined with nontoxic concentration of bortezomib (BTZ) and gambogic acid (GA) on multiple myeloma (MM) RPMI-8226 cells and possible underlying mechanisms. The effects of BTZ-GA-loaded MNP-Fe3O4 (BTZ-GA/MNPs) on cell proliferation were assessed by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,4,-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) method. Cell cycle and apoptosis were detected using the terminal deoxyribonucleotidyl transferas

A case of lead exposure resulting from the accidental ingestion of a lead-containing solution is reported. Because of clinical management rapidly performed through chelation therapy by 2,3-dimercaptopropane sulfonate sodium and meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid, blood lead levels of this 51-year-old patient were moderate (412.9 μg/L) and no clinical symptoms were observed. Numerous blood and urine samples were collected for kinetic analysis of lead elimination. However, we report the first case in which hair samples were analyzed to determine the excretion level of lead after acute intoxication

We studied the expression pattern of cell adhesion molecules associated to transendothelial migration of leukocytes in different lung's vascular compartments after administration of a magnetic fluid sample containing maghemite nanoparticles surface-coated with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid. The analyses were conducted in mice 4 and 12 h after endovenous administration of the magnetic fluid in control mice. Firstly, the migratory activity of leukocytes after magnetic fluid surface-coated with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid administration was confirmed using broncho-alveolar lavage and ligh

OBJECTIVES: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of spot urine creatinine concentration (UCC) as a new test for the evaluation of differential renal function in obstructed kidneys (DRF(ok)) drained by percutaneous nephrostomy tube (PCNT).
METHODS: In patients with obstructed kidneys drained by PCNT, DRF(ok) was derived from UCC by comparing the value of UCC in the obstructed kidney to the value in the contralateral kidney, and was derived from dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) renal scans and creatinine clearance (CCr) using standard methods. Subsequently, the results of UCC were compared to the

PURPOSE: The association of vesicoureteral reflux, urinary tract infection and renal scarring is well recognized. We evaluated the incidence of renal parenchymal scarring in a large series of infants with primary high grade vesicoureteral reflux.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of 549 consecutive infants with primary high grade vesicoureteral reflux between 1985 and 2006 were reviewed. A total of 473 infants (86.1%) presented with febrile urinary tract infections, 63 (11.5%) were screened for sibling vesicoureteral reflux and 13 (2.4%) were investigated because of prenatally diagno

INTRODUCTION: The complementary and alternative medicine practice of prescribing chelators to children with autism is based on the premise that the chronic symptoms of autism can be ameliorated by reducing heavy metal body burden. However, there has not been definitive evidence, published to date, to support the assertion that children with autism are at increased risk of an excess chelatable body burden of heavy metals. The oral chelator meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) can be used diagnostically to mobilize heavy metals from extravascular pools, enhancing the identification of individ

A 47-year-old man with a prior gunshot wound presented with arthritis, constipation, abdominal pain, and weight loss. Arthrocentesis did not reveal the cause of the arthritic complaints, but lead poisoning was suspected and confirmed. We present this case along with a short review of the literature pertaining to this often overlooked and reversible cause of lead poisoning.

A 70-year-old white female presented approximately 24 h after ingesting three 475 mg tablets (1.425 g) of mercuric chloride in a suicide attempt. Acute renal failure necessitated the initiation of haemodialysis approximately 4 d after the ingestion. Treatment with BAL (2,3-dimercaptopropanol) resulted in only small increases in mercury output into dialysate. A new procedure involving the extracorporeal infusion of the chelating agent dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) into the arterial blood line during haemodialysis was initiated. This procedure of Extracorporeal Regional Complexing Haemodialysis

Congenital lead toxicity is rare. Lead freely crosses the placenta, therefore, placing the developing fetus at a higher risk for lead toxicity. This can lead to adverse consequences, such as spontaneous abortion, low birth weight, low IQ, and neurodevelopmental impairment. We present a rare case of siblings born to a mother with pica behaviors. Her venous lead level was 42 μg/dL at the time of disclosure. The repeat venous level at delivery 2 weeks later was 61 μg/dL. The infant's venous level shortly after birth was 89 μg/dL. The neonate was transferred to the NICU, where he received 9 doses

BACKGROUND: Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales represent a major therapeutic challenge. MBLs, requiring zinc at their catalytic site, could be inhibited by meso-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), a heavy metal chelator already widely used for treating lead intoxication.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the activity of carbapenems alone or combined with DMSA against MBL-producing Escherichia coli in a severe murine peritonitis model.
METHODS: Isogenic strains of wild-type E. coli CFT073 producing the MBLs NDM-1, VIM-2 and IMP-1, and the control serine carbapenemases OXA-48 and KPC-3 were constructe

OBJECTIVE: To explore the impacts of Pb exposure and the dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) chelation therapy on bone metabolisms in young rats of different ages, as well as the potential mechanisms.
METHOD: Young rats were exposed to 0.05%-0.1% Pb acetate for 19 days, during infanthood (postnatal day, PND2-20), childhood (PND21-39) and adolescenthood (PND40-58) respectively. In each developmental stage, rats were further divided into three subgroups: lead-exposed, one-course and two-course DMSA chelation therapy subgroups. Blood/bone lead concentrations, serum calciotropic hormones concentration
