Effect of an Appearance-Based vs. a Health-Based Sun-Protective Intervention on French Summer Tourists' Behaviors in a Cluster Randomized Crossover Trial: The PRISME Protocol.

Background: Sun exposure has short- and long-term adverse effects on eyes, skin, and the immune system. The most serious effect, melanoma, is largely attributable to natural ultraviolet radiation. Its prevalence is steadily increasing in fair-skinned populations in most European countries. Despite annual prevention campaigns, the French population continues to be overexposed to the sun and under-protected. Social and psychosocial characteristics may play an important role in sun protection determinants. Overexposure is partially motivated by a desire to tan oneself for aesthetic reasons. Durin

A transparent PVA-based polymer sunscreen protects retinal tissue from ultraviolet damage.

Ultraviolet (UV) light causes many eye diseases. Wearing sunglasses blocks <50% UV light from entering eyes. Skin sunscreens are banned for eye use due to irritation and safety concerns. Few sunscreens can be used in the eye to block UV light without compromising the eye functions. Herein, we modified poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), the active ingredient in commercial artificial tears, using naturally extracted aldehydes through Hantzsch's reaction and obtained a PVA-syringaldehyde derivative that has a high sun protection factor (SPF 80), excellent UV resistance (>99%) and high transparency (84%)

Self-Reported Changes in Sun-Protection Behaviors at Different Latitudes in Australia.

Sun exposure is the most important source of vitamin D, but is also a risk factor for skin cancer. This study investigated attitudes toward vitamin D, and changes in sun-exposure behavior due to concern about adequate vitamin D. Participants (n = 1002) were recruited from four regions of Australia and completed self- and interviewer-administered surveys. Chi-square tests were used to assess associations between participants' latitude of residence, vitamin D-related attitudes and changes in sun-exposure behaviors during the last summer. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to mod

Legally brown: using ethnographic methods to understand sun protection attitudes and behaviours among young Australians 'I didn't mean to get burnt--it just happened!'.

Sun protection is not commonly perceived as an important issue by adolescents yet this behaviour would, if adopted, confer significant lifelong protection against skin cancer. Despite the world's highest skin cancer rates, Australia remains a culture which values sun seeking, tanning and outdoor activities. This qualitative study used ethnographic methods to produce insights into sun protection behaviours and attitudes of Australian adolescents aged 15 and 16 years. Applying the Theory of Planned Behaviour to the analysis, the study involving 51 adolescents revealed the complexity of the facto

Positive impact of Distintivo Soludable on implementation of sun protection policies and practices in schools of Andalusia, Spain.

The incidence of skin cancer is increasing worldwide even though its main risk factor is preventable. This study evaluated the impact of the Distintivo Soludable pilot intervention on implementation of photoprotection policies and practices in preschool and primary schools in Andalusia, Spain. We completed two rounds of a Sun Protection Policies and Practices Survey (SPPPS) nine months apart. At baseline, 67 Andalusian schools earned a median score of 3/12 points (range 0-8; IQR: 2). Ten schools involved in Distintivo Soludable intervention group significantly increased their scores from 4 to

Sun awareness and sun protection practices in Malta.

BACKGROUND: Concern regarding the rising incidence of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers in Malta has led to the organization of annual campaigns since the early 1990s. These aim to inform the public of the dangers of sun exposure and to promote sun protection. OBJECTIVE: To help guide future campaigns, a survey was carried out to evaluate current sun protection measures among the Maltese people and to assess their level of knowledge regarding harmful effects of the sun on the skin. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 559 pedestrians were interviewed in the main street of the capital city of Malta

The impact of the kidskin sun protection intervention on summer suntan and reported sun exposure: was it sustained?

BACKGROUND: Recognition that early sun exposure is an important risk factor for cutaneous melanoma in white populations has led to efforts to reduce children's sun exposure. 'Kidskin' was a non-randomized, school-based sun protection intervention trial in Perth, Western Australia (1995-1999). Its aim was to determine the extent to which such a program could reduce children's sun exposure. METHODS: Kidskin involved 1614 children assigned to one of three groups: a Control, a 'Moderate' and a 'High' intervention group of 14, 11 and 8 schools respectively. The unit of assignment was the school. C

Sun exposure and sunscreen use among sunbathers in Denmark.

Eight hundred and eight sunbathing Danes were interviewed in order to register the duration of sun exposure and sunscreen use. The mean sun exposure time, 203 min, was found to be independent of sex, age and use of sunscreen. Overall, sunscreens were used by 65%, 73% of the females and 52% of the males. The median sun protection factor used by subjects older than 10 years was 5; in the case of children 10 years or younger, it was 12. Eight per cent of the interviewed subjects used more than one factor. Fifty-seven per cent of the sunscreen users applied the sunscreen prior to arriving at the b

Prevalence and correlates of sun protection and skin self-examination practices among cutaneous malignant melanoma survivors.

Little is known about the level of engagement and correlates of sun protection and skin self-exam among individuals diagnosed with melanoma. Participants (N = 229) completed measures of skin self-exam and sun protection practice and knowledge and attitudes. Approximately eighty-four percent of patients reported engaging in skin self-examination at least once in the past year. Engagement in sun protection practices was moderate. Self-exam practice was associated with gender, physician recommendation about self-exam, and perceived benefits and barriers of self-exam. Sun protection was associated

Quick and brief review: Comparison between different in vivo SPF determination methods.

BACKGROUND: The use of sunscreen products has grown considerably in the last few decades because sunscreen products considered as one of the most important ways of skin protection against UV rays by different mechanisms such as reflecting, absorbing, or scattering. Excess expose to UV causes sunburn, early skin aging, and skin cancers. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to review and compare prominent in vivo sun protection factor (SPF) determination protocols and investigate their approach in test criteria. Finally, this can help skin care specialists to choose the comprehensive SPF determination

The impact of a novel digital sun protection campaign on sun-related attitudes and behaviours of healthcare workers: A prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: 13 000 cases of skin cancer are diagnosed annually in Ireland, with ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure the strongest risk factor. Public health primary prevention campaigns focus on encouraging safe sun protective measures and skin cancer awareness. We designed a novel, digitally-animated hospital-based campaign targeting all aspects of sun-protective behaviour. OBJECTIVES: To explore the sun-protective attitudes and behaviours of healthcare workers, and the effect of a digital hospital-based campaign on these findings. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional prospective observation

How Does Illness Perception Affect the Quality of Life and Sun Protection Behaviors of Rosacea Patients?

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have noted the link between rosacea severity and quality of life, but there is limited understanding of how disease perception impacts these aspects. Additionally, sun exposure is identified as a common trigger for rosacea flare-ups, emphasizing the importance of sun protection practices in managing the condition. This cross-sectional study aims to fill the gap in the literature by investigating the relationship between clinical severity, disease perception, quality of life, and sun protection behaviors in rosacea patients. METHODS: Questionnaires assessing the qu

Sunburns and Sun-Protective Behaviors after a Diagnosis of Melanoma.

Exposure to ultraviolet light is a recognized modifiable risk factor for melanoma. Melanoma patients were more likely to practice sun-protective behaviors after their diagnosis. But it is not known how long these sun-protective behaviors will sustain. We aim to evaluate if sun-protective behaviors and likelihood of recent sunburn differ according to time elapsed since the melanoma diagnosis using the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. Data in the NHANES cycle years 2003-2006 and 2010-2012 were analyzed. The relationship of sun-protective behaviors and like

Parental perspective on sun protection for young children in Bavaria.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the most important modifiable risk factor for skin cancer. Parents are responsible for sun protection of their young children and thus their knowledge and attitudes should be assessed. METHODS: A survey that included 2619 children aged 3-6 years (response: 64.7%) was performed in Erlangen during 2001/2002. Parents' attitude, knowledge and behavior regarding sun protection were ascertained by using a self-administered questionnaire. Demographic and photosensitivity data of the children were recorded, along with the UV radiation-related outc

Sunscreen use and skin protection behaviour on the Belgian beach: a comparison 9 years later.

Public health campaigns encourage people to protect themselves against skin cancer by using sunscreens and taking other protective measures. The objective is to estimate the impact of these campaigns on the rise of awareness among the general public. This study explores the prevalence and predictors of solar protection behaviour in a sample of beachgoers and compares these results to another similar study carried out 9 years earlier (i.e. summer 2001). During the month of August 2010, a total of 408 participants (144 men and 264 women) were randomly selected on their way to the Belgian beach i

Safety and efficacy of a broad-spectrum sunscreen in patients with discoid or subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus.

An eight-week, open-label study was conducted to test the efficacy, safety, and cosmetic acceptability of a broad-spectrum sunscreen in patients with discoid lupus erythematosus or subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus. The sunscreen combined the ultraviolet A absorber avobenzone (Parsol 1789, Givaudan Corp) and the ultraviolet B absorber padimate O and had a sun protection factor greater than fifteen. The overall clinical disease severity decreased from 2.7 (four point scale) at baseline to 1.7 after eight weeks (p = 0.005). Cutaneous signs and symptoms, including hyperpigmentation, papules,
