Comparative antibacterial activity of clove extract against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen belonging to the γ-proteobacteria family, known to cause pneumonia linked with ventilator use and nosocomial infections. With the increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, there is a pressing need to identify alternatives to conventional antibiotics. Plant-derived substances (PDSs) offer potential not only as antibacterial agents but also as modulators of antibiotic resistance. In this study, diffusion assay using disc agar, and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay of each imipenem, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, and c

Use of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) in the detection of irradiated spices.

In this study, the validity of using the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) technique as a scanning method for the detection of irradiated foodstuffs was investigated. Gamma-irradiated thyme, mint and clove samples were stimulated with a continuous wave blue light (CW-OSL) and their OSL signal sensitivity and stability properties were measured. While no OSL signal was observed for all non-irradiated spices, a significant increase in the intensity of OSL signals was noted for all samples after irradiation with 5 kGy, 10 kGy and 20 kGy. It was also observed that the measured OSL signals wer

Enrichment of Rapeseed Honey with Combined Polyphenol-Rich Dry Extracts from Mandarin Peels and Clove Buds.

Enriching honey with plant additives allows for increasing its antioxidant potential in an additive-dependent manner and at the same time shaping new sensory properties, increasing consumer acceptability. Known spices and by-products from fruit processing can also be used to produce such additives. Combined dry extracts of clove buds and mandarin peels were used to enrich antioxidant properties and to flavor rapeseed honey. Four different extracts combining both raw products were produced by ultrasound-assisted extraction using 50% vol. ethanol and converted into powder by vacuum concentration

Assessing the impact of an environmentally friendly approach on irreversible dental hydrocolloid performance.

BACKGROUND: Impression materials can harbour microorganisms from saliva and blood, posing cross-contamination risks. However, post-setting disinfection might compromise the dimensional accuracy and mechanical properties of alginates. Hence, it was the aim of this research to assess the detail reproduction, tear strength, elastic recovery, and surface quality of the gypsum model of newly developed dental alginates with inherent antimicrobial properties. METHODS: Three dental alginate groups with antimicrobial alterations were formulated. One group replaced water with 0.2% chlorhexidine solutio

Evaluation of clove-chitosan nanohybrids and clove nanoemulsions as bio-agents against the peach fruit fly, Bactrocera zonata (diptera: tephritidae).

Plant Essential oils (EOs)-based eco-friendly biopesticides area substitute for chemically manufactured insecticides in integrated pest management (IPM) programs. Plant essential oils show chemical instability which causes the active ingredients to evaporate and degrade quickly and that is the primary issue for using them as biopesticides in field applications. EOs could be incorporated into controlled-release nano formulations, which are anticipated to be more efficient than the bulk substance. In this research, clove nanoemulsion (CEO-NE) and clove-chitosan nanohybrid (CEO-NE@CNPs) were asse

Physiological and molecular responses of house fly (Musca domestica L.) to clove flower bud extracts.

The house fly, Musca domestica, is a major mechanical vector of several pathogens, posing significant public health risks. Due to the hazards associated with indoor use of synthetic insecticides, biopesticides offer an eco-friendly alternative. Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) flower bud extract contains bioactive insecticidal compounds; however, a comprehensive study of its sublethal effects on M. domestica, along with the associated molecular responses, was lacking. Ethanol-based clove extracts were characterized using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This study assessed the lethal a

Extraction of anthocyanins from jambolan fruit using ethanol and deep eutectic solvents: Bioactivity, cytotoxicity, and application as a natural colorant.

This study aimed to evaluate the extraction of anthocyanins from jambolan (Syzygium cumini) fruit using choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as co-solvents in ethanolic systems. The extraction was performed using ethanol and choline chloride-based DESs with xylitol (ChX-DES) and glycerol (ChG-DES). The highest anthocyanin extraction was achieved using ethanol with 5% DES, resulting in 20.40 to 23.36 mg M3G/ 100 g. Increased temperature favored the extraction, particularly at 70 °C for 5% ChG-DES, yielding 28.92 mg M3G/100 g. The ethanol containing 5% ChG-DES extract exhibited h

Attraction or Repelling Effects of Commercial Plant Essential Oils on the Synanthropic Cheiracanthium mildei (Araneae: Cheiracanthiidae).

The northern yellow sac spider Cheiracanthium mildei L. Koch, is expanding its range to Central Europe, especially to synanthropic habitats. The spiders become unwanted companions because of the unreasonable fear - arachnophobia, and estetic reason - silk retreats in corners, capturing dust. The most commonly used substances against spiders are pesticides, which are, however, toxic. In our work we tested the attraction or repellence of 15 essential oils (EO) from plants representing eight families to C. mildei. Our research has shown a significant repellent effect of EO from three plants, name

Antimalarial silver and gold nanoparticles: Green synthesis, characterization and in vitro study.

In the present study, we are reporting antimalarial potential of silver (AgNPs) and gold (AuNPs) nanoparticles synthesized by leaf and bark extract of Syzygium jambos (L.) Alston (Myrtaceae). AuNPs and AgNPs obtained by both the extracts were characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy, zeta potential, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). NMR and FTIR spectra indicate that the saccharides and phenolics present in the S. jambos extracts were the major contributors responsible for the synthesis and stabilization of NPs.

Sustainable Bacterial Control of Hatching Eggshells Using Essential Oils.

Background: Decontamination of poultry surfaces through appropriate hygiene and sanitation measures can partially mitigate bacterial problems, as this process does not result in the complete elimination of bacteria. Thus, the remaining bacteria can persist and contaminate eggshells. Therefore, regardless of the rigor of the sanitary standards applied on farms, it is suggested that hatching eggs be subjected to the sanitization process. Here, we investigated the effectiveness of essential oil-based antibacterial agents in sanitizing eggs. Results: The results indicated that essential oils from

[Temporary tatooing: black henna or harkous?].

Contact sensitization to natural henna (Lawsonia inermis) long used as a skin dye in powder or paste form has rarely, if ever, been observed. Recently a number of anaphylactoid reactions to PPD contained in paints used for temporary tattoos have been described. The purpose of this article is to present 8 cases involving 4 children and 4 adults who developed contact dermatitis after temporary tattoo using "harkous" that contains no henna. The authors review the literature about temporary tattooing. "Harkous" is a mixture of nut gall and clove to which PPD is sometimes added. Many reports have d
