Explainable AI for resource-aware intervention prioritization of digital burnout in healthcare workplaces.

BACKGROUND: This is the first review of literature and synthesis of data on community onset methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CO-MRSA) infections in Australia. Incidence of CO-MRSA varies considerably in Australia, depending on geographic and demographic factors. METHODS: Data for the rates of MRSA infections were collected from articles identified using PubMed, Scopus, the grey literature and data from State and Federal Government Surveillance Systems. We synthesized data and developed a framework for how data was selected, collated, linked, organized and interpreted. RESULTS: Th

Evidence for a common genetic aetiology in high-risk families with multiple haematological malignancy subtypes.

A family history of a haematological malignancy (HM) is known to be a risk factor for HMs. However, collections of large families with multiple cases of varied disease types are relatively rare. We describe a collection of 12 families with dense aggregations of multiple HM subtypes. Cases were ascertained from a population based study conducted between 1972 and 1980 in Tasmania, Australia. Diagnoses were confirmed through review and re-examination of stored tissue, pathology reports, Tasmanian Cancer Registry and flow cytometry records. Family trees were generated and kinship coefficients were

An outbreak of cryptosporidiosis associated with an animal nursery at a regional fair.

Cryptosporidiosis is a common gastrointestinal illness that is transmitted from infected persons, animals, or contaminated water or food. This article reports on an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis associated with an animal nursery at an agricultural show held in northern Tasmania during October 2001. Eighty-one per cent of cases (38/47) notified to the Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services over a 35 day period were interviewed to determine potential sources of infection. Eighty-one per cent of interviewed cases (29/36) reported that they had attended the agricultural show, and 75 per

A new group of species of the genus Megalothorax (Collembola, Neelidae) with Gondwanan distribution, and introducing an open interactive identification key of Megalothorax species.

Megalothorax Willem, 1900 is a genus of Neelidae (Collembola) with worldwide distribution. Three new species are described here: Megalothorax anterolenis sp. nov. (Patagonia, Chile), Megalothorax tasmanterolenis sp. nov. (Tasmania, Australia) and Megalothorax zealanterolenis sp. nov. (the South Island, New Zealand). New descriptive elements are also provided for Megalothorax rubidus. Two of the new species were sequenced (COI, 16S rDNA, 28S rDNA). Within the genus, the three new species form a new group of species characterised by the absence of secondary granulation dorsally on the head and t

Ten-year trends in adverse drug reaction-related hospitalizations among people with dementia.

AIM: Trends in the incidence of adverse drug reaction (ADR)-related hospitalizations have been studied in the general population, but not specifically in people with dementia. This study aimed to investigate trends in the incidence of ADR-related hospitalizations among people with dementia, and identify the most commonly implicated drugs and diagnoses in these admissions. METHODS: This study utilized the administrative data of all adults admitted to the four major public hospitals of Tasmania, Australia, with a primary or secondary diagnosis of dementia from July 2010 to December 2019. ADR-re

A qualitative study on the practicality of guideline recommended office blood pressure measurement in primary care.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: For accuracy, clinic blood pressure (BP) must be measured using a standardised, guideline-recommended protocol. Practicality of this has not been examined, which was the aim of this study. METHOD: Across Tasmania, Australia, 16 co-design workshops were undertaken with primary care health professionals who perform BP measurement (n = 63) and community members (n = 47). Workshops discussed whether the guideline-recommended BP measurement protocol was adhered to. RESULTS: There was awareness among health professionals of the recommended way to measure BP. However, non

Is public transport a promising strategy for increasing physical activity? Evidence from a study of objectively measured public transport use and physical activity.

BACKGROUND: Greater public transport use has been linked to higher physical activity levels. However, neither the amount of physical activity associated with each daily public transport trip performed, nor the potential total physical activity gain associated with an increase in trips/day, has been determined. Using objective measures, we aimed to quantify the association between public transport use, physical activity and sedentary time. METHODS: A longitudinal study of Australian adults living in Hobart, Tasmania, who were infrequent bus users (≥ 18 years; used bus ≤ 2 times/week). The numb

"A little bit of hope goes a long way": Exploring the role of peer workers in alcohol and other drug rehabilitation services.

INTRODUCTION: Peer workers operating within health care settings can offer unique perspectives based on their own lived experience. Within alcohol and other drug (AOD) rehabilitation services, the potential value of peer work is becoming increasingly recognised. This qualitative study aimed to evaluate a newly implemented peer worker program located across three rehabilitation services in Tasmania, Australia. METHODS: Online interviews were conducted with eight clients, seven peer workers, and five non-peer worker employees with varied experience with peer worker programs. All interviews were

Psittacid Adenovirus-2 infection in the critically endangered orange-bellied parrot (Neophema chrysogastor): A key threatening process or an example of a host-adapted virus?

Psittacid Adenovirus-2 (PsAdv-2) was identified in captive orange-bellied parrots (Neophema chrysogastor) during a multifactorial cluster of mortalities at the Adelaide Zoo, South Australia, and an outbreak of Pseudomonas aeruginosa septicaemia at the Tasmanian Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment captive breeding facility, Taroona, Tasmania. This was the first time that an adenovirus had been identified in orange-bellied parrots and is the first report of PsAdv-2 in Australia. To investigate the status of PsAdv-2 in the captive population of orange-bellied parrots, 1

Affected Other Prevalence and Profiles: Findings from a Cross-Sectional Australian Population-Representative Gambling Study.

Gambling-related harm can extend to family members and friends but few population-representative studies have investigated affected other (AO) prevalence estimates and profiles in the general population. Using data from the 5000 adult respondents in the Fourth Social and Economic Impact Study of Gambling in Tasmania, this study aimed to: (1) identify prevalence estimates of AO status and professional help-seeking; (2) establish the socio-demographic and gambling profiles of AOs; (3) extend the growing literature examining negative mental health characteristics experienced by AOs, after account

Breast-feeding and atopic disease: a cohort study from childhood to middle age.

BACKGROUND: The literature regarding the association between breast-feeding and atopic diseases has been contradictory. OBJECTIVE: We have assessed the relationship between breast-feeding and atopic disorders in a cohort followed into middle age. METHODS: The Tasmanian Asthma Study is a population-based prospective cohort study that has followed participants from the age of 7 to 44 years. Exclusive breast-feeding in the first 3 months of life was examined as a risk factor for atopic diseases by using multiple logistic regression and generalized estimating equation analyses. RESULTS: At age

Haycocknema perplexum myositis: the first description of subclinical disease and a proposed distinctive triad to evoke clinical suspicion.

INTRODUCTION: Haycocknema perplexum is an exceedingly rare cause of parasitic myositis endemic to Australia, more specifically, Tasmania and North Queensland. There is a paucity of literature regarding this diagnosis, with only nine previously described cases. DIAGNOSIS: This report details two cases of biopsy-confirmed H. perplexum myositis from Townsville University Hospital and describes the first-ever case of subclinical infection. There is limited known information regarding the H. perplexum life cycle and a definitive host which has hindered the development of a non-invasive diagnostic

Eggs of extinct dwarf island emus retained large size.

Islands off southern Australia once harboured three subspecies of the mainland emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae), the smaller Tasmanian emu (D. n. diemenensis) and two dwarf emus, King Island emu (D. n. minor) and Kangaroo Island emu (D. n. baudinianus), which all became extinct rapidly after discovery by human settlers. Little was recorded about their life histories and only a few historical museum specimens exist, including a number of complete eggs from Tasmania and a unique egg from Kangaroo Island. Here, we present a detailed analysis of eggs of dwarf emus, including the first record of an a

Draft genome sequence of a nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae strain used in the study of human respiratory infection.

OBJECTIVES: Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is an important human respiratory bacterium that can cause a range of diseases including sinusitis, otitis media, conjunctivitis, pneumonia as well as acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A number of studies have used NTHi clinical isolate RHH-3 as a laboratory strain for experimentation examining the effect of cigarette smoke and more recently, biomass smoke, on the susceptibility and response of cells lining the respiratory tract to infection. Therefore, definition of the genome content of RHH-3 is required

Tasmanian Thyroid Advisory Committee. Study in disease surveillance, 1950-1979.

Tasmania has had a long-standing endemic goitre problem. Attempts over the period from 1949 to 1965 to correct iodine deficiency in school-children and young women met with only partial success. In 1966, iodization of bread was introduced with suitable legislative authority. Within six months, an increased incidence of thyrotoxicosis was noted in thyroid clinics in Launceston and Hobart. In 1967, a Thyroid Advisory Committee was set up to advise the Minister of Health. This Committee included clinicians, nutritionists, epidemiologists, and subsequently veterinarians and dairy technologists as

Sunburn associated with increased number of nevi in darker as well as lighter skinned adolescents of northern European descent.

The associations of sun exposure, sunburn, skin color, and other constitutional characteristics with the density of nevi (2 mm or more in diameter) were assessed in a study of 410 secondary school children ages 14-15 years in Tasmania, Australia. Skin color was estimated by using a chromameter that measures across the visible light spectrum (400-700 nm). Skin color and lifetime history of sunburn were significant predictors of nevus density on the arms and legs of girls and boys and on the shoulders and backs of boys. The nevus density ratios between the highest and lowest exposure groups were

Sarcoptes scabiei: The Mange Mite with Mighty Effects on the Common Wombat (Vombatus ursinus).

Parasitism has both direct and indirect effects on hosts. Indirect effects (such as behavioural changes) may be common, although are often poorly described. This study examined sarcoptic mange (caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei) in the common wombat (Vombatus ursinus), a species that shows severe symptoms of infection and often causes mortality. Wombats showed alterations to above ground behaviours associated with mange. Infected wombats were shown to be active outside of the burrow for longer than healthy individuals. Additionally, they spent more time scratching and drinking, and less tim

Life-history change in disease-ravaged Tasmanian devil populations.

Changes in life history are expected when new sources of extrinsic mortality impact on natural populations. We report a new disease, devil facial tumor disease, causing an abrupt transition from iteroparity toward single breeding in the largest extant carnivorous marsupial, the Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii), in which males can weigh as much as 14 kg and females 9 kg. This change in life history is associated with almost complete mortality of individuals from this infectious cancer past their first year of adult life. Devils have shown their capacity to respond to this disease-induced

Genomic analyses of giant kelp reveal restricted connectivity across the Southern Hemisphere and striking diversity in Aotearoa (New Zealand).

The macroalga Macrocystis pyrifera ("giant" or "bladder" kelp) plays a vital role in cold-temperate marine ecosystems but faces increasing threats from ongoing environmental change. Understanding its population diversity and connectivity is essential for predicting future range shifts and assessing the ecological consequences of such shifts in both present and novel ranges. Here, we used high-resolution genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) to investigate the population structure of M. pyrifera within and among populations in Aotearoa (New Zealand), Lutruwita (Tasmania), and Falkland Islands/Malvinas
