Long-Term Effects of COVID-19 on Taste and Olfactory Functions in Individuals with a History of Substance Abuse: A Retrospective Cohort Study from the TriNetX US Collaborative Networks

Background: Substance use disorders not only subject individuals to increased suffering from chronic pain, poisonings, and economic hardships but also place a substantial burden on public health. Reports indicated that people with substance use disorder may be especially susceptible to COVID-19 and its complications. Long-term effects of COVID-19, known as Long-COVID, may heighten the susceptibility of individuals with substance abuse disorders to taste and smell impairments, consequently intensifying the strain on public health resources. This study aimed to determine the effect of substance

Differentiating Taste Perception Between Pre-diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes: A Comparative Analysis.

Introduction Taste perception influences food choices and may contribute to the development and progression of metabolic disorders. Altered taste sensitivity has been reported in individuals with impaired glucose regulation, but comparative data across stages of dysglycemia remain limited. The present study aimed to compare taste sensitivity for sweet, sour, salty, and bitter modalities among healthy controls, pre-diabetic individuals, and patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methodology A cross-sectional study was conducted in 45 participants divided into three groups: healthy contr

A homoeriodictyol sodium mouthwash reduces bitterness sensitivity in patients with gynecological cancer receiving carboplatin-based chemotherapy.

Bitter taste disorders are common chemotherapy-induced side effects that compromise nutrition and quality of life. Since no treatment exists for conditions such as bitter taste hypersensitivity and phantogeusia, we hypothesized that a homoeriodictyol sodium (Na-HED) mouthwash reduces chemotherapy-induced bitterness sensitivity caused by salivary platinum (Pt) species derived from intravenously administered carboplatin. In a clinical pilot study involving patients with gynecological cancer (n = 8) receiving carboplatin-based chemotherapy, dietary intake, salivary Pt concentrations, and changes

Prospective assessment of gustatory function after radiotherapy for head and neck cancers.

BACKGROUND: Taste disorders are major causes of morbidity in patients undergoing head and neck irradiation. We quantitatively assessed the gustatory function of patients with head and neck cancers who underwent radiotherapy using recently developed standardised tools for measuring taste. METHODS: Twenty patients undergoing head and neck irradiation responded to a specific questionnaire and were assessed by olfactory and gustatory function tests. To assess changes over time, testing was performed before, immediately after, and at 2- and 4-week intervals following the start of radiotherapy. Con

Taste sensation following cochlear implantation surgery.

OBJECTIVES: The chorda tympani nerve (CTN) is at risk of damage during cochlear implantation, especially during posterior tympanotomy. The aim of this study was, therefore, to elicit the risk of taste disorders following cochlear implantation surgery involving a mastoidectomy and a posterior tympanotomy approach. METHOD: Twenty-six patients underwent a taste test before, 3 days after, and 6 weeks after cochlear implantation surgery. The taste sensations - sweet, sour, salt and bitter - were determined. Patients' self-ratings of taste function were also obtained. In addition, the surgeons prov

Bitter Taste Perception of the Human Tongue Mediated by Quinine and Caffeine Impregnated Taste Strips.

OBJECTIVES: Tests for gustatory function have become increasingly important in diagnosis and treatment of patients with taste disorders. While caffeine and quinine hydrochloride solutions have been used for global testing of bitter perception, only quinine has been used to test regional bitter perception by means of taste strips. The aim of the present study was to validate caffeine impregnated taste strips as an alternative to quinine taste strips for assessment of regional bitter perception. METHODS: A total of 46 healthy volunteers (mean age/range, 23/19-27 years) were included in this stu

Taste and smell disturbance with the alpha-adrenoceptor agonist midodrine.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of a disturbance of taste and smell associated with the alpha-adrenoceptor agonist midodrine. CASE SUMMARY: A 64-year-old white man with autonomic failure was started on midodrine 5 mg/day as treatment for orthostatic hypotension. After 3 months, the dose was increased to 12.5 mg/day, whereupon he noted a new onset of taste and smell disturbance. These symptoms made eating so unpleasant that the man greatly reduced his food intake, leading to significant weight loss. In addition, he experienced well-recognized adverse effects of midodrine, such as scalp pruritus, a

Chemosensory dysfunction in primary Sjögren's syndrome: a topical review.

Primary Sjögren's syndrome is an autoimmune exocrinopathy related to lymphocytic infiltration of the exocrine glandular epithelia (such as salivary, lacrimal, nasal, and sebaceous glands or vaginal mucosa) with systemic manifestations of an immuno-inflammatory nature, and not associated with any other systemic disease. It is characterized by severe dryness (Sicca syndrome), particularly in mouth and eyes, with potential strong impact on quality of life and could increase the risk of depression in Sjögren's patient. To date, the impairment of taste and olfactory functions related to Sjögren syn

Gene Variants Associated With Individual Sensitivity for Taste Changes After the COVID-19 Infection.

Human gustatory function is a complex trait combining taste, smell, and touch required for the safety and quality assessment of ingested food. Taste dysfunction is one of the most prominent symptoms of COVID-19 that was reversible in most cases, but some patients reported permanent changes in their perception of different food sources. This symptom brought attention to the complexity of the regulation of smell and taste and their potential use in diagnostics and treatment of acute and chronic taste disorders. We investigated the genetic association of candidate genes with SARS-CoV-2 infection-

Extremes of eating are associated with reduced neural taste discrimination.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders are severe psychiatric disorders of unknown etiology. Understanding how neuronal function affects food choices could help personalize treatment based on brain function. Here we wanted to determine whether disordered eating behavior is associated with alterations in the primary taste cortex's ability to classify taste stimuli, which could interfere with taste reward processing. METHOD: One-hundred and six women, 27 healthy comparison (age 26.15 ± 6.95 years), 21 with restricting-type anorexia nervosa (AN; age 23.10 ± 6.14 years), 19 recovered from restricting-type A

Comparative Quantification of Fungiform Papillae Density and Taste Perception in Anemic and Healthy Controls: A Case-Control Study.

Background Taste perception is crucial for dietary choices, nutrition, and overall health. The human tongue, particularly the fungiform papillae, plays a significant role in taste sensation, especially for sweet and umami flavors. Anemia, a common condition characterized by low hemoglobin levels, can affect sensory perception, including taste. Recent research has begun to explore the relationship between fungiform papillae density and taste perception in individuals with anemia. Objective This study aimed to investigate the comparative quantification of fungiform papillae density and its corre

Psychophysical testing of smell and taste function.

The senses of smell and taste are largely underappreciated by laypersons and medical professionals alike. Unlike vision, hearing, balance, and touch, they are rarely evaluated quantitatively in the clinic, even though hundreds of thousands of persons seek medical help annually for disorders of these senses. Chemosensory disorders impact quality of life, including the flavor of foods and beverages, and compromise the ability to detect such environmental hazards as fires, leaking natural gas, and spoiled foodstuffs. Moreover, olfactory dysfunction can be a harbinger for Alzheimer's and other neu

[Perception of taste and smell in normal and pathological aging: an update].

The physiological and pathological aging on sense organs is widely studied in the visual and hearing modalities. By contrast, taste and smell changes are widely overlooked. These symptoms are rarely evoked in the elderly and often neglected in clinical practice. Studies in this population are rare and show contradictory results. In this update, we describe the perception of taste and smell in aging. In a first part, we present studies about the aging of smell and taste senses. While taste is remarkably spared during aging, olfaction decreases dramatically since 5th decade of life, frequently r

Dysfunctional chemosensation in myasthenia gravis: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Myasthenia gravis has traditionally been viewed as a disorder that solely affects the neuromuscular junction within the peripheral nervous system. However, there is now evidence that the cholinergic dysfunction of this disorder may be more widespread than previously believed. This article provides a systematic review of the studies that examined smell and taste function in myasthenia gravis. METHODS: We analyzed studies that reported chemosensory function alterations in patients with myasthenia gravis. PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science, EMBASE, and SciELO, searched to identify artic

TasteNet: A novel deep learning approach for EEG-based basic taste perception recognition using CEEMDAN domain entropy features.

BACKGROUND: Taste perception is the process by which the gustatory system detects and interprets chemical stimuli from food and beverages, involving activation of taste receptors on the tongue. Analyzing taste perception is essential for understanding human sensory responses and diagnosing taste-related disorders. NEW METHOD: This research focuses on developing a deep learning framework to effectively recognize basic taste stimuli from EEG signals. Initially, the recorded EEG signals undergo preprocessing to remove noise and artifacts. The CEEMDAN (complete ensemble empirical mode decompositi

Weight loss induced by calorie restriction in mice is associated with a higher sweet taste response and increased fungiform papillae density.

Diet-induced obesity resulting from excessive calorie consumption has been associated with taste disorders in both mice and humans. While this relationship is well-established, there is still limited knowledge on how calorie-restricted diets affect the sense of taste in normal-weight individuals. We hypothesized that differences in body composition of mice subjected to caloric restriction (CR) or intermittent fasting (IF) compared to ad libitum chow are associated with changes in bitter and sweet taste signaling. Male C57BL/6NRj mice were fed either ad libitum (control), 75 % of the weight of
