Deployment of the tear gas agent 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile (CS) for riot control has significantly increased in recent years. The effects of CS have been believed to be transient and benign. However, CS induces severe pain, blepharospasm, lachrymation, airway obstruction, and skin blisters. Frequent injuries and hospitalizations have been reported after exposure. These two case reports are of fatal injuries from less-lethal weapons (tear gas guns) using pebbles as an unconventional ammunition. We report the case of a 25-year-old depressed woman who committed suicide with a starter's pistol loaded with CS tear-gas ammunition. The propellant gases of the contact shot entered her chest through the left sixth intercostal space. Exsanguination was caused by perforations of the pericardium and apex of the heart. Lachrymators of varied structure are reduced either by hydrogen addition or halogen substitution using NADH model compounds as donors. Similar compounds without lachrymatory activity were reduced either very slowly or not at all. CS (o-Chlorobenzalmalonitril) is reduced by NADH, the reaction being catalyzed by an enzyme present in erythrocytes. Thus the lachrymatory action follows a general scheme for the activity of sensory transduction. This scheme consists of a reception in the nerve cell membrane and a fast or simultaneous chemical transformation in an enzymic reaction.

OBJECTIVES: MalPEG-hemoglobin, 4 g/dL (MP4), is a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier with a low hemoglobin concentration, low P50 (oxygen half-saturation pressure of hemoglobin), high colloid osmotic pressure, and high viscosity.
