Developmental neurotoxicity evaluation of three Chinese herbal medicines in zebrafish larvae by means of two behavioral assays: Touch-evoked response and light/dark transition.

Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) is used among pregnant women. However, the question of its safety during pregnancy remains unclear. The use of these products relies on history of use data but there are specific toxicities like developmental neurotoxicity that are clearly understudied. Here we use the zebfrafish embryo developmental toxicity assay (ZEDTA) in combination with two behavioral assays: touch-evoked response and Light/Dark (L/D) transition assay to evaluate the neuro/developmental toxicity of three herbal products commonly used in CHM [Chinese name (abbreviation; part of the plant and

Effect of black tea brew of Camellia sinensis on sexual competence of male rats.

AIM: In Sri Lankan traditional medicine black tea brew (BTB) of Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze (Theaceae) is claimed to have male sexual stimulant activity. As this claim is not scientifically tested and proven, this study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of BTB on male sexual competence. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Different doses of BTB made from Sri Lankan high grown dust grade no 1 tea (84, 167 and 501 mg/ml) or water were orally administered to separate groups of rats (n=9 per group) and 3h later their sexual behaviour were monitored (for 15 min) using receptive females. RESULTS: The

Multivariate optimisation of the experimental conditions for determination of three methylxanthines by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography.

Caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine), theobromine (3,7-dimethylxanthine) and theophylline (1,3-dimethylxanthine) are the most important naturally occurring methylxanthines. Caffeine is a constituent of coffee and other beverage and included in many medicines. Theobromine and theophylline are formed as metabolites of caffeine in humans, and are also present in tea, cocoa and chocolate products. In order to improve the chromatographic resolution (R(s)) with a good analysis time, experimental designs were applied for multivariate optimisation of the experimental conditions of an isocratic reversed-

Ameliorative effect of white tea from 50-year-old tree of Camellia sinensis L. (Theaceae) on kidney damage in diabetic mice via SIRT1/AMPK pathway.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Diabetic kidney damage (DKD) is one of the most common complications of diabetes, which is known as a chronic inflammatory kidney disease caused by persistent hyperglycemia. White tea was originally used as a folk medicine to treat measles in ancient China. What arouses our interest is that there is a traditional method to treat diabetes with white tea taken from over 30-year-old tree of Camellia sinensis L. However, there are few reports on the renal protection of white tea. AIM OF THE STUDY: This present study was designed to study the potential protective ef

Food toxins and the Caribbean Parkinson plus types.

In the 90's, clinico pathological studies have considerably improved the diagnosis of specific and rare neurodegenerative diseases. After a training in Parkinsons' disease in Paris, the author moved to French West Indies (Guadeloupe) and observed a high incidence of atypical parkinsonism with dementia, unresponsive to levodopa. Similar features were observed in Martinique. An environmental origin has been suspected with the exposure to toxins of annonaceae leaves and seeds. The candidate toxins are acetogenins acting as mitochondrial poison. This was demonstrated in neuronal cell cultures, and

Anti-adenovirus activity, antioxidant potential, and phenolic content of black tea (Camellia sinensis Kuntze) extract.

BackgroundAdenovirus (ADV) causes a number of diseases in human, and to date, no specific antiviral therapy is approved against this virus. Thus, searching for effective anti-ADV agents seems to be an urgent requirement. Many studies have shown that components derived from medicinal plants have antiviral activity. Therefore, the present study was aimed to evaluate in vitro anti-ADV activity and also antioxidant potential and total phenolic compounds of black tea (Camellia sinensis) crude extract. MethodsIn this study, the hydroalchoholic extract of black tea was prepared and its anti-ADV activ

[Physiological and hygienic evaluation of combined effects of vibration, noise and dynamic physical load in tea plant-picking machine operators].

The article deals with complex influences of local vibration, noise and physical overload in ACHR-330 tea-plucking machine operators. 3 sets of experiments included measurements of the vibration and noise levels caused by the machine, and involved 5 volunteers twice in each set of the experiments. The physiological study results confirmed the fact that the occupational conditions caused considerable shifts in vibration sensitivity and markedly influenced the peripheral vessels. Through a set of regression equations it was proved that local vibration and noise were mostly responsible for the fu

Human psychopharmacology of hoasca, a plant hallucinogen used in ritual context in Brazil.

A multinational, collaborative, biomedical investigation of the effects of hoasca (ayahuasca), a potent concoction of plant hallucinogens, was conducted in the Brazilian Amazon during the summer of 1993. This report describes the psychological assessment of 15 long-term members of a syncretic church that utilizes hoasca as a legal, psychoactive sacrament as well as 15 matched controls with no prior history of hoasca ingestion. Measures administered to both groups included structured psychiatric diagnostic interviews, personality testing, and neuropsychological evaluation. Phenomenological asse

Epigallocatechin-Gallate (EGCG): An Essential Molecule for Human Health and Well-Being.

Green tea, long consumed across Southeast Asia, is highly esteemed for its medicinal properties and is often favored over conventional treatments in Eastern cultures. Its health benefits are largely attributed to its minimal processing, which preserves pharmacologically active compounds, particularly catechins, a key class of polyphenols, with epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCG) being the most abundant and bioactive. These compounds exhibit antioxidant, anti-cancer, antimicrobial, and antiangiogenic properties. Beyond systemic health, EGCG has diverse applications in dermatology, including the tre

The origin of pharmacopsychology: Emil Kraepelin's experiments in Leipzig, Dorpat and Heidelberg (1882-1892).

This historical review shows that the early history of cognitive psychopharmacology, originally labelled as "pharmacopsychology", is closely linked to developments in experimental psychology and academic psychiatry. At the beginning of his scientific career, the German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin (1856-1926) joined Wilhelm Wundt's laboratory of experimental psychology at the University of Leipzig. Although Kraepelin was fired from his clinical position at the university's psychiatric hospital, he completed his habilitation, the German equivalent of Ph.D., and started a series of pharmacologica

Antiviral potential of black tea and blueberry extracts against monkeypox virus by targeting orthopoxvirus surface proteins.

Monkeypox virus (MPXV) outbreaks primarily affect resource-limited regions in Africa, highlighting an urgent need for low-cost, accessible therapeutics. Food-medicine homologous (FMH) substances, which are bioactive food components with medicinal properties, offer a promising therapeutic avenue owing to their low cost, favorable safety, and oral bioavailability. Here, we report that black tea extract (BTE) and blueberry extract (BBE), two representative FMH substances, can inhibit the vaccinia virus (VACV) and MPXV. Mechanistic studies suggest that BTE and BBE act at the post-attachment stage

Herbal Medicines and Epilepsy: The Potential for Benefit and Adverse Effects.

The widespread availability and use of herbal medicines raise the potential for adverse effects in the epilepsy population. Herbal sedatives (kava, valerian, chamomile, passionflower) may potentiate the effects of antiepileptic medications, increasing their sedative and cognitive effects. Despite some antiseizure effects in animal models, they should not be used in place of standard seizure medications because efficacy has not been established. Anecdotal, uncontrolled observations suggest that herbal stimulants containing ephedrine (ephedra or ma huang) and caffeine (cocoa, coffee, tea, maté,
