There is an explicit relationship between knowledge generation, transmission (dissemination and diffusion), knowledge acquisition, and utilization. In order to disseminate and diffuse information for health promotion and disease prevention, there is an assumption that we just need to change the behaviours of people. This paper challenges this notion and suggests that the thinking behind the behaviours (cognition) also needs to be addressed for successful acquisition and utilization of information. Studies focusing on cognition or thought processes and how sociocultural factors influence or int

In the United States, the complex process of getting health care technologies into practice takes place in a competitive health system that is driven by technological innovation. Federal, state, and local governments' roles in the diffusion process are limited. In low-income countries, where competitive markets are not as prominent, diffusing medical innovations requires an alternative understanding of how new technologies are adopted. This paper describes how, in low-income countries, the lack of functioning markets serves as a barrier to the transfer of necessary health technologies, and why

Transgenic (Tg) animal technology is one of the growing areas in biology. Various Tg technologies, each with its own advantages and disadvantages, are available for generating Tg animals. These include zygote microinjection, electroporation, viral infection, embryonic stem cell or spermatogonial stem cell-mediated production of Tg animals, sperm-mediated gene transfer (SMGT), and testis-mediated gene transfer (TMGT). However, there are currently no comprehensive studies comparing SMGT and TMGT methods, selecting appropriate gene delivery carriers (such as nanoparticles and liposomes), and dete

One of the most critical issues to be solved in reproductive medicine is the treatment of patients with multiple failures of assisted reproductive treatment caused by low-quality embryos. This study investigated whether mitochondrial transfer to human oocytes improves embryo quality and provides subsequent acceptable clinical results and normality to children born due to the use of this technology. We transferred autologous mitochondria extracted from oogonia stem cells to mature oocytes with sperm at the time of intracytoplasmic sperm injection in 52 patients with recurrent failures (average

Microbial electrosynthesis is a promising technology that recovers energy from wastewater while converting CO2 into CH4. Constructing a biocathode with both strong H2-mediated and direct electron transfer capacities is crucial for efficient startup and long-term stable CH4 production. This study found that introducing carboxyl groups onto the cathode effectively enhanced both electron transfer pathways, improving the reduction rate and coulombic efficiency of CH4 production and increasing the CH4 yield by 2-3 times. Carboxyl groups decreased the overpotential for H2 evolution and increased cur

American journal of transplantation : official journal of the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons2022eng
Organ transplantation is limited due to the scarcity of donor organs. In order to expand the supply of organs for transplantation, interspecies chimeras have been examined as a potential future source of humanized organs. Recent studies using gene editing technologies in combination with somatic cell nuclear transfer technology and hiPSCs successfully engineered humanized skeletal muscle in the porcine embryo. As these technologies progress, there are ethical issues that warrant consideration and dialogue.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review discusses recent publications that investigate risk factors associated with ectopic pregnancy after IVF.
RECENT FINDINGS: Data on the risk factors for developing ectopic pregnancy after IVF are still inconsistent. Between fresh nondonor IVF and embryo transfer cycles, the significant risk factor for ectopic pregnancy was tubal factor infertility, and endometriosis, rather than male factor infertility. Higher ectopic pregnancy rate could be associated with zygote intrafallopian transfer, assisted hatching, large embryo transfer volume, deep fundal transfer, and f

Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC) is a rare neurodegenerative condition resulted from mutations in NPC1 and NPC2 genes. This cellular lipid transferring disorder mainly involves endocytosed cholesterol trafficking. The accumulation of cholesterol and glycolipids in late endosomes and lysosomes results in progressive neurodegeneration and death. Recently, genome editing technologies, particularly CRISPR/Cas9 have offered the opportunity to create disease models to screen novel therapeutic options for this disorder. Moreover, these methods have been used for the purpose of gene therapy. This rev

One of the major themes characterizing the emergence of modern neurosurgery has been the concept of technology transfer and the application of a broad spectrum of revolutionary elements of technology from both physical and biological science. These transference applications are now apparent in modern neurosurgery as it is practiced on all continents of the globe. More than 3 decades ago, these ideas that now have come to fruition were in states of formulation. This article describes and further documents one such fertile cauldron of ideas and practical realities--the United States Navy Nuclear
