Comprehensive review on adult neurogenesis through immunological studies in the brain regions of vertebrate classes.

Adult neurogenesis is the process in which new neurons are produced, mature, and integrated into the neural circuits of adult vertebrate brains- fish, amphibians, reptiles, aves, and mammals. All vertebrate groups exhibit a great capacity for neurogenesis, which is dependent upon the number of neurogenic zones in the brain. The fish brain is known to have the highest neurogenic rate because they acquire the maximum number of neurogenic zones, such as the olfactory bulb, telencephalon, preoptic area, cerebellum, thalamus, hypothalamus, optic tectum, and medulla oblongata. The amphibian brain is

Telencephalic Flexure and Malformations of the Lateral Cerebral (Sylvian) Fissure.

After sagittal division of the prosencephalon at 4.5 weeks of gestation, the early fetal cerebral hemisphere bends or rotates posteroventrally from seven weeks of gestation. The posterior pole of the telencephalon thus becomes not the occipital but the temporal lobe as the telencephalic flexure forms the operculum and finally the lateral cerebral or Sylvian fissure. The ventral part is infolded to become the insula. The frontal and temporal lips of the Sylvian fissure, as well as the insula, all derive from the ventral margin of the primitive telencephalon, hence may be influenced by genetic m

Primary cilia control telencephalic patterning and morphogenesis via Gli3 proteolytic processing.

Primary cilia have essential functions in vertebrate development and signaling. However, little is known about cilia function in brain morphogenesis, a process that is severely affected in human ciliopathies. Here, we study telencephalic morphogenesis in a mouse mutant for the ciliopathy gene Ftm (Rpgrip1l). We show that the olfactory bulbs are present in an ectopic location in the telencephalon of Ftm(-/-) fetuses and do not display morphological outgrowth at the end of gestation. Investigating the developmental origin of this defect, we have established that E12.5 Ftm(-/-) telencephalic neur

Evidence for intrinsic development of olfactory structures in Pax-6 mutant mice.

It has been reported that the arrival of primary olfactory axons is required to induce the development of the olfactory bulb (OB). On the other hand, the Sey(Neu)/Sey(Neu) mutant mouse (Small eye) has been previously described as a model for the absence of olfactory bulbs, owing to the lack of olfactory epithelium (OE). In the present report, we take advantage of this mutant and study a neural structure in the rostral pole of the telencephalon that phenotypically resembles the prospective OB. We named this formation olfactory bulb-like structure (OBLS). We also report the occurrence, in the mu

Ectopic bone morphogenetic proteins 5 and 4 in the chicken forebrain lead to cyclopia and holoprosencephaly.

Proper dorsal-ventral patterning in the developing central nervous system requires signals from both the dorsal and ventral portions of the neural tube. Data from multiple studies have demonstrated that bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) and Sonic hedgehog protein are secreted factors that regulate dorsal and ventral specification, respectively, within the caudal neural tube. In the developing rostral central nervous system Sonic hedgehog protein also participates in ventral regionalization; however, the roles of BMPs in the developing brain are less clear. We hypothesized that BMPs also play

The distribution of dopamine immunoreactivity in the forebrain and midbrain of the lizard Gekko gecko: an immunohistochemical study with antibodies against dopamine.

The distribution of dopamine (DA) immunoreactivity in the forebrain and the midbrain of the lizard Gekko gecko was studied by using recently developed antibodies against DA. Dopamine-containing cells were found around the glomeruli of the olfactory bulb, in several parts of the periventricular hypothalamic nucleus, in the periventricular organ, the ependymal wall of the infundibular recess, the lateral hypothalamic area and the pretectal posterodorsal nucleus of the diencephalon, and in the ventral tegmental area, the substantia nigra, and the presumed reptilian equivalent of the mammalian A8

Olfactory projections in the lepidosirenid lungfishes.

Olfactory nerve and olfactory bulb projections in lepidosirenid lungfishes were experimentally determined with neural tracers. Unilateral injections of DiI into the olfactory nerve labeled the accessory and main olfactory bulbs as well as fibers of the anterior root of the terminal nerve, which terminates extensively in cell groups of the medial hemispheric wall, the dorsal and lateral pallia, and the preoptic nuclei and posterior tubercle. Lepidosirenid lungfishes do not exhibit separate vomeronasal nerves, but previous data indicate that calbindin-positive receptors within basal crypts of th

Congenital hydrocephalus associated with anomalies of midline telencephalic structures. A case report.

Hydrocephalus is classified into communicating, if cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) can flow freely from the ventricle to the subarachnoid space, and into non-communicating, if it cannot. The cause of hydrocephalus is diverse, either congenital or acquired conditions causing obstruction to the flow of CSF. The location of the lesion is more important than the size or nature of the lesion. We describe an unusual case of congenital communicating hydrocephalus associated with multiple malformations of midline telencephalic structures. This was a premature male baby of 30 weeks gestational age. The pregn

Individual and age-related variation of cellular brain composition in a squamate reptile.

Within-species variation in the number of neurons, other brain cells and their allocation to different brain parts is poorly studied. Here, we assess these numbers in a squamate reptile, the Madagascar ground gecko (Paroedura picta). We examined adults from two captive populations and three age groups within one population. Even though reptiles exhibit extensive adult neurogenesis, intrapopulation variation in the number of neurons is similar to that in mice. However, the two populations differed significantly in most measures, highlighting the fact that using only one population can underesti

Developmental history of nervus terminalis in embryos of insectivorous bats.

Insectivorous bat embryos (Tadarida and Myotis) ranging from 6- to 16-mm C-R length were examined for the presence of the nervus terminalis. These embryos have no vomeronasal nerve with which the nervus terminalis could be confused. The nerve and associated ganglion cells first appear in the 7-mm embryo. As the embryo ages, a gradual increase in nerve size and ganglion cell numbers occurs. In the 13-mm embryo, nerve size and ganglion cell numbers are reduced, and in older embryos both nerve and cells are absent, as in the adult. The ganglion cells arise as clusters from the nasal septal epithe

Diffuse intracranial oligodendroglioma in a cow.

This report describes the clinical, morphological and immunohistochemical findings in an adult cow with cerebral oligodendroglioma. The tumour extended from the metencephalon to the telencephalon, with infiltration of the meninges. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells lacked expression of a specific tumour antigen, were partially positive for S-100 and tau protein, and were negative for a range of antigens including glial fibrillary acid protein, neuron-specific enolase, myelin basic protein and synaptophysin. This is the first report describing a diffuse, cerebral oligodendroglioma in a co

First trimester size charts of embryonic brain structures.

STUDY QUESTION: Can reliable size charts of human embryonic brain structures be created from three-dimensional ultrasound (3D-US) visualizations? SUMMARY ANSWER: Reliable size charts of human embryonic brain structures can be created from high-quality images. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Previous studies on the visualization of both the cavities and the walls of the brain compartments were performed using 2D-US, 3D-US or invasive intrauterine sonography. However, the walls of the diencephalon, mesencephalon and telencephalon have not been measured non-invasively before. Last-decade improvements in

Phylogenetic conservatism in the presence of a neurotensin-related hexapeptide in neurons of globus pallidus.

The vast majority of the pallidal neurons of the hamster, pigeon, caiman and turtle basal telencephalon were positively labeled by an antiserum against LANT-6, a neurotensin-like hexapeptide. In sharks also, LANT-6-positive neurons were observed in the apparent equivalent of the globus pallidus. These results, which imply the coexistence of a LANT-6-like peptide with gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in pallidal neurons, suggest that a LANT-6-like peptide may be an important and evolutionarily conserved neurotransmitter/neuromodulator in pallidal neurons.

Neuronal and Astroglial Localization of Glucocorticoid Receptor GRα in Adult Zebrafish Brain (Danio rerio).

Glucocorticoid receptor α (GRα), a ligand-regulated transcription factor, mainly activated by cortisol in humans and fish, mediates neural allostatic and homeostatic functions induced by different types of acute and chronic stress, and systemic inflammation. Zebrafish GRα is suggested to have multiple transcriptional effects essential for normal development and survival, similarly to mammals. While sequence alignments of human, monkey, rat, and mouse GRs have shown many GRα isoforms, we questioned the protein expression profile of GRα in the adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) brain using an alterna

Organization of the gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (Lpxrfa) system in the brain of zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) is a hypothalamic neuropeptide that inhibits gonadotropin secretion in birds and mammals. However, the role of GnIH (Lpxrfa) in teleosts is unknown. In this study, a transgenic zebrafish (Danio rerio) line Tg(gnih:mCherry) was developed to determine the organization of GnIH neurons in the brain. Another transgenic line, Tg(gnih:mCherry; gnrh3:eGFP), was established to determine the positional relationships between GnIH and GnRH3 neurons. In these transgenic lines, the mCherry protein was specifically expressed in GnIH neurons, and eGFP was expressed exclu

The distribution of kisspeptin (Kiss)1- and Kiss2-positive neurones and their connections with gonadotrophin-releasing hormone-3 neurones in the zebrafish brain.

Kisspeptin is a neuroendocrine hormone with a critical role in the activation of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurones, which is vital for the onset of puberty in mammals. However, the functions of kisspeptin neurones in non-mammalian vertebrates are not well understood. We have used transgenics to labell kisspeptin neurones (Kiss1 and Kiss2) with mCherry in zebrafish (Danio rerio). In kiss1:mCherry transgenic zebrafish, Kiss1 cells were located in the dorsomedial and ventromedial habenula, with their nerve fibres contributing to the fasciculus retroflexus and projecting to the ventr
