Patient satisfaction with radioiodine treatment and telephone follow-up for the management of thyrotoxicosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Patient satisfaction is of paramount importance when delivering a patient-centered service. Our hospital has been a center for the use of radioiodine to treat thyrotoxicosis for several years, but we began carrying out patient satisfaction surveys and implementing changes after 2008. The aim of the project reported here was to assess patient satisfaction with our radioiodine treatment and telephone follow-up service, and to compare results with our previous surveys. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Anonymous patient satisfaction questionnaires were sent to all patients who rece

Efficacy of the telephone-based Brief Motivational Intervention for alcohol problems in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The Brief Motivational Intervention (BMI) is an effective treatment for alcohol misuse but has not been adequately tested for use in helplines for alcoholics. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a telephone-based BMI for Brazilians seeking help with alcohol use cessation. METHODS: A randomized, controlled trial was performed with Brazilian subjects. Participants were randomly assigned to either the minimal intervention group (i.e., given reference materials) or the BMI group. Alcohol abstinence was evaluated in a 6-month follow-up telephone counseling

Effect of chronic exposure to cellular telephone electromagnetic fields on hearing in rats.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of the electromagnetic field emitted by cellular telephones upon the inner ear of rats, using distortion product otoacoustic emissions. METHODS: Forty Wistar Albino rats were used. Twenty newborn and 20 adult rats were divided into two groups of 10, one to participate in the study and one as a control. The rats were exposed to the electromagnetic field for 6 hours per day, for 30 consecutive days. Before and after the 30 day exposure period, distortion product otoacoustic emissions were measured in each group and a signal-to-noise ratio calculated, which was la

[The psychometric properties of the Dutch version of the Telephone Interview Cognitive Status (TICS)].

The Telephone Interview Cognitive Status (TICS) is an instrument to screen for dementia in older persons by telephone. Although the psychometric properties of the TICS have been studied in various countries, the quality of the Dutch version of the TICS was yet unknown. This paper presents the Dutch version of the TICS and reports on its reliability and validity among 51 patients of Maastricht University Hospital, The Netherlands. The Pearson and intra-class correlations for test-retest reliability were 0.93 and 0.92, respectively. The Pearson and intra-class correlations for inter-rater reliab

Validity of the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS) in post-stroke subjects.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment and dementia are very common after stroke. Telephone screening has potential advantages for clinical follow-up and population-based research in this group. We wished to test the validity of the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS) for cognitive testing in post-stroke subjects. METHODS: Cognitive function in stroke outpatients was assessed using the R-CAMCOG (a modification of the cognitive part of the Cambridge Examination for Mental Disorders of the Elderly, for use in stroke subjects) along with the TICS and a modified version, the TICSm. The test

Evaluation of actigraphy and automated telephoned questionnaires to assess hypnotic effects in insomnia.

This study aimed to explore new methodologies in insomnia research, namely whether actigraphy was suitable to show hypnotic effects over weeks in insomnia, and to compare an automated method of questionnaire data collection with traditional methods. Thirty-eight insomniacs took part in a 5-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of the effects of 2 weeks of administration of temazepam 20 mg on sleep. Outcome measures were actigraphy and daily St Mary's Hospital Sleep Questionnaires (SMHSQ). Actigraphy was performed using Actiwatch (CNT) and analysed using both the automated Actiwatch slee

The reliability of telephone interviews compared with in-person interviews using memory aids.

PURPOSE: Information obtained by telephone interviews and in-person interviews is generally considered comparable, but it is unclear if extensive memory aids can be used effectively with telephone interviews. We compared a telephone interview to an in-person interview using the same questionnaire and memory aids in both. METHODS: A convenience sample of 103 women, aged 25 to 69 years, completed a telephone interview and at least four weeks later, completed an in-person interview. Memory aids included a life events calendar, cue lists, and worksheets. RESULTS: Agreement values, measured by ka

Development and validation of a telephone classification interview for common chronic headache disorders.

BACKGROUND: For a trial of supportive self-management for people with chronic headache we needed to develop and validate a telephone classification interview that can be used by a non-headache specialist to classify common chronic headache types in primary care. We aimed to specifically: exclude secondary headaches other than medication overuse, exclude primary headache disorders other than migraine and tension type headache (TTH), distinguish between chronic migraine and chronic TTH, and identify medication overuse headache. METHODS: We held a headache classification consensus conference to

Validation of a telephone screening tool for spasmodic dysphonia and vocal fold tremor.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The objective of this study was to ascertain whether clinicians can reliably distinguish between spasmodic dysphonia (SD)/vocal tremor and other voice disorders by telephone, despite this modality's limited frequency response. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized, single-blinded, and prospective study. METHODS: Voice-disordered patients with (n = 22) and without (n = 17) SD and/or vocal tremor recorded standardized utterances via landline telephone. A laryngologist and two speech-language pathologists blinded to the diagnoses rated each recording as "yes" or "no" to "SD or tremor

Telephone delivered interventions for reducing morbidity and mortality in people with HIV infection.

BACKGROUND: This is one of three Cochrane reviews examining the role of the telephone in HIV/AIDS services. Telephone interventions, delivered either by landline or mobile phone, may be useful in the management of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in many situations. Telephone delivered interventions have the potential to reduce costs, save time and facilitate more support for PLHIV. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of voice landline and mobile telephone delivered interventions for reducing morbidity and mortality in people with HIV infection. SEARCH METHODS: We searched The Cochrane Cen

A telephone survey of internal parasite control practices on sheep farms in Spain.

A telephone survey of farmers was conducted to determine current internal parasite control practices on sheep farms in Spain; the farmers were interviewed by their veterinarians. Anthelmintic choice was largely on veterinary advice and dominated by benzimidazoles and macrocyclic lactones. Anthelmintic rotation was separated into: no rotation (42% of farms); annual rotation (36%); rotate within year (20%); and rotate every second year (2%). The mean annual number of treatments varied subtly by region; ewes and rams 1.6-2.1, replacement lambs 1.7-2.1. Anthelmintics are administered primarily dur

Detection of asymptomatic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation with the trans-telephonic electrocardiograph system.

Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) carries an equally high annual stroke rate as chronic atrial fibrillation (AF). Furthermore, the frequency and duration of PAF are thought to be associated with stroke risk. In this pilot study, a trans-telephonic electrocardiograph (TTE) monitoring system was used to detect asymptomatic PAF and to study the relationship between ischemic stroke and the frequency of PAF. Between December 2004 and April 2006, 70 patients enrolled in the TTE monitoring program. Patients either transmitted electrocardiograms (ECGs) daily or upon experiencing cardiac symptoms. O
