[Analysis of tendon injuries accompanying distal radius fractures using volar locking plates].

We examined 6 cases of tendon injuries that accompanied distal radius fractures using volar locking plate between April 2006 and March 2012. Male: one case, female: five cases, average age 57.0 (33~70) years old. The fracture type was A2 in one case, A3 in four cases, and C2 in one case by AO classification. The average period for operation waiting was 2.7 days. We analyzed the time of occurrence of tendon rupture (extensor pollicis longus (EPL)・flexor pollicis longus (FPL)), the existence or not of screw prominence and dorsal roof fragment, and the positioning of the plate setting. The tendon

Rehabilitation of flexor and extensor tendon injuries in the hand: current updates.

In recent years, a significant amount of research in the field of tendon injury in the hand has contributed to advances in both surgical and rehabilitation techniques. The introduction of early motion has improved tendon healing, reduced complications, and enhanced final outcomes. There is overwhelming evidence to show that carefully devised rehabilitation programs are critical to achieving favourable outcomes. Whatever the type, or level, of flexor or extensor injury, the ultimate goal of both the surgeon and therapist is to protect the repair, modify peritendinous adhesions, promote optimal

Tendon transfers for radial, median, and ulnar nerve injuries: current surgical techniques.

Tendon transfers are performed predominantly to restore hand function or balance due to injuries of the radial, median, and ulnar nerves. Current surgical techniques for the most common tendon transfers for reconstruction of radial, median, and ulnar nerve palsies are demonstrated. These techniques can also be applied to restore flexion and extension of the fingers and thumb after injuries to the extrinsic flexor and extensor muscles and tendons of the forearm or intrinsic muscles of the hand.

Stretching for prevention of Achilles tendon injuries: a review of the literature.

Professional and recreational athletes commonly perform pre-exercise stretching to prevent musculoskeletal injuries. Little definitive evidence exists that clearly demonstrates the efficacy of stretching in reducing injury. Achilles tendon injuries are among the most common injuries affecting active individuals in the United States today. Clinicians commonly recommend stretching the Achilles tendon without concrete scientific evidence to support such a claim. Few studies have addressed the effect of stretching in Achilles tendon injuries, and it is unclear if the conclusions made for musculosk

Reactive oxygen species in tendon injury and repair.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are chemical moieties that in physiological concentrations serve as fast-acting signaling molecules important for cellular homeostasis. However, their excess either due to overproduction or inability of the antioxidant system to inactivate them results in oxidative stress, contributing to cellular dysfunction and tissue damage. In tendons, which are hypovascular, hypocellular, and composed predominantly of extracellular matrix (ECM), particularly collagen I, ROS likely play a dual role: regulating cellular processes such as inflammation, proliferation, and ECM rem

Surgical Treatment for Chronic Tendon Mallet Injury.

A variety of surgical options for chronic tendon mallet fingers have been reported. There are advantages and disadvantages to current surgical approaches. We introduce a surgical treatment for chronic tendon mallet injury that involves anatomical reconstruction of the terminal tendon and lateral band with palmaris longus (PL) tendon grafting. Harvested PL tendon is folded in 2 or divided into 2 slips. The graft is attached to a remnant of the original terminal tendon at the distal interphalangeal joint. Both half-slip tendons are passed under the transverse retinacular ligament and sutured sid

[Combined flexor tendon and nerve injury of the hand].

Any restoration of hand function following tendon and nerve injury has to include the repair or replacement of the hand's ability to perform a great many tasks. It is hard at first to appreciate fully the loss that occurs with flexor tendon injury. Also sensibility can be compromised from tendon injury without direct injury to the nerve, as object recognition in the absence of vision requires finger movement. When peripheral nerve injury is combined with flexor tendon injury, sensibility is directly impaired. There is a loss in the sense of finger or thumb position, pain temperature and touch

[Functional treatment of extensor tendon injury of the hand].

We have treated 73 patients with 107 injuries of the extensor tendon. We started with an elastic dynamic splinting means = 9 (2-27) days after operation. The duration of functional treatment was means = 40 (13-103) days. Infections were only seen in severe cases (12.3%), and there was no rupture of the sutured tendon. Good or excellent functions were found in 92% of the patients. To sum up, primary extensor tendon repair will provide superior functional results at all levels of injury by postoperative dynamic splinting.

Thymoquinone inhibited the chondrogenic differentiation of tendon-derived stem cells caused by tendon injury.

BACKGROUND: The micro-injury of collagen fibers occurs as the tendon is stretched repeatedly between the strains of 4% and 8%, which results in the cumulative micro-damage in tendon. In prior studies, we have shown that micro-injured tendon slices with 6.4% strain promoted the chondrogenic differentiation of tendon-derived stem cells (TDSCs) through the activation of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. AIM: To investigate the potential of thymoquinone (TQ) to alleviate ER stress, and, consequently, to suppress the chondrogenic differentiation of TDSCs. METHODS: Decellularized tendon slices, s

Tendon injury and repair - A perspective on the basic mechanisms of tendon disease and future clinical therapy.

UNLABELLED: Tendon is an intricately organized connective tissue that efficiently transfers muscle force to the bony skeleton. Its structure, function, and physiology reflect the extreme, repetitive mechanical stresses that tendon tissues bear. These mechanical demands also lie beneath high clinical rates of tendon disorders, and present daunting challenges for clinical treatment of these ailments. This article aims to provide perspective on the most urgent frontiers of tendon research and therapeutic development. We start by broadly introducing essential elements of current understanding abou

A review of tendon injury: why is the equine superficial digital flexor tendon most at risk?

Tendon injury is one of the most common causes of wastage in the performance horse; the majority of tendon injuries occur to the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) whereas few occur to the common digital extensor tendon. This review outlines the epidemiology and aetiology of equine tendon injury, reviews the different functions of the tendons in the equine forelimb and suggests possible reasons for the high rate of failure of the SDFT. An understanding of the mechanisms leading to matrix degeneration and subsequent tendon gross failure is the key to developing appropriate treatment and p

The role of tendon and ligament vasculature in ageing and injury.

Ageing is a fundamental biological process marked by declining physiological function and the accumulation of stress-induced damage. It contributes to chronic disease and drives widespread alterations across organ systems, including the vasculature. Ageing of the macro- and microvasculature impairs nutrient delivery, promotes tissue degeneration, and reduces repair capacity in many tissues, including those of the musculoskeletal system. Tendons and ligaments become increasingly injury-prone with age, yet the relationship between vascular ageing and tendon and ligament in health and disease rem

Sagittal Band Injury and Extensor Tendon Realignment.

The sagittal bands are structurally important, aiding in the central alignment of the extensor tendons over the heads of each metacarpal. They resist the deviation of the tendon with flexion of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint. Injury to the sagittal band can cause the extensor tendon to lose its alignment leading to pain, tendon subluxation, or dislocation. Generally, if these injuries are recognized and treated within 3 weeks of injury, they will not require surgery. The goal of surgery is to restore the anatomic alignment of the extensor tendon by either direct repair of the sagittal ban
