The effect of mortality salience on fertility intentions from the perspective of terror management theory.

Research on Terror Management Theory (TMT) suggests that mortality salience (MS) motivates individuals to pursue symbolic and biological immortality, with offspring serving as a potential buffer against death anxiety. However, it remains unclear whether and how MS influences fertility intentions. Based on TMT, this study aims to investigate whether MS enhances individuals' fertility intentions and to examine one proposed mechanism by which reproductive cognition may buffer death anxiety. Three experimental studies were conducted, combining behavioral experiments, questionnaire surveys, and pri

Vascular terror: the strange nightmare of a knotted guidewire during central venous catheterisation.

A 79-year-old woman presents to the hospital with dyspnoea, fever, and hypotension, and is diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia and septic shock. Resuscitation is initiated with fluids and vasopressors, and a central venous catheter is placed. However, during the procedure, the guide experiences resistance and cannot be removed, becoming trapped. This is confirmed with tomography and reconstruction, demonstrating intravascular position. The patient is then sent to interventional cardiology for extraction, which is successfully performed using the EN Snare (Merit Medical). The significan

The headache of terror: A matched cohort study of adolescents from the Utøya and the HUNT Study.

OBJECTIVE: To elaborate the risk of headache among adolescent survivors exposed to terror. METHODS: On July 22, 2011, a lone man opened gunfire, killing 69 people at a summer camp for adolescents on the Utøya islet in Norway. All 358 adolescent survivors 13 to 20 years of age were invited to participate in the Utøya interview study. Among the 213 (59%) respondents, half (49%) were male, the mean age was 17.7 years, and 13 (6%) were severely injured. For each survivor, 8 matched controls were drawn from the population-based Young-HUNT3 Study, conducted between 2006 and 2008, with a participati

Post-traumatic stress among rescue workers after terror attacks in Norway.

BACKGROUND: On 22 July 2011, Norway was struck by two terror attacks. Seventy-seven people were killed, and many injured. Rescue workers from five occupational groups and unaffiliated volunteers faced death and despair to assist victims. AIMS: To investigate the level of, and associations between, demographic variables, exposure and work-related variables and post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). METHODS: A cross-sectional study of general and psychosocial health care personnel, police officers, firefighters, affiliated and unaffiliated volunteers were conducted ~10 months after the terror

The foot-and-mouth disease epidemic of 2001 in the UK: implications for the USA and the ""war on terror".

While there is no evidence to suggest that the recent epidemic of foot-and-mouth disease (Fmd) in the Uk and its subsequent spread to continental Europe were caused by bioterrorism, the extent of the epidemic shows that Fmd could be a very powerful weapon for a bioterrorist wishing to cause widespread disease in livestock and economic disruption for the targeted country. This paper describes the epidemic. It then examines the contentious issues that arose through the use of extensive slaughter to control the epidemic and explores how, in turn, the concerns of society are being translated into …

Managing terror. Public health officials learn lessons from bioterrorism attacks.

When a photo-journalist presented with the first case of inhalation anthrax in the United States in 23 years, it marked the worse case of biological terrorism in our nation's history. It also marked a significant management challenge for numerous local, state and federal officials. Review what was learned and how we can better prepare for future attacks.

Intensely Exposed Oklahoma City Terrorism Survivors: Long-term Mental Health and Health Needs and Posttraumatic Growth.

In this study, we explore directly exposed terrorism survivors' mental health and health status, healthcare utilization, alcohol and tobacco use, and posttraumatic growth 18½ years postdisaster. Telephone surveys compared terrorism survivors and nonexposed community control subjects, using Hopkins Symptom Checklist, Breslau's PTSD screen, Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, and Health Status Questionnaire 12. Statistical analyses included multivariable logistic regression and linear modeling. Survivors, more than 80% injured, reported more anxiety and depression symptoms than did control subjects,…

Suicidal behavior among low-income, African American female victims of intimate terrorism and situational couple violence.

This study examined risk of suicidal behavior among low-income, African American women (N = 369) in three types of male intimate relationships- intimate terrorism (IT) (i.e., physical violence used within a general pattern of coercive control), situational couple violence (SCV; i.e., episodic physical violence that is not part of a general pattern of coercive control), and nonviolent (NV; i.e., no physical violence). IT victims had more than double the odds of suicidal behavior compared to SCV victims and this association remained significant after controlling for physical violence severity, d…

Causes of death in U.S. Special Operations Forces in the global war on terrorism: 2001-2004.

BACKGROUND: Effective combat trauma management strategies depend upon an understanding of the epidemiology of death on the battlefield. METHODS: A panel of military medical experts reviewed photographs and autopsy and treatment records for all Special Operations Forces (SOF) who died between October 2001 and November 2004 (n = 82). Fatal wounds were classified as nonsurvivable or potentially survivable. Training and equipment available at the time of injury were taken into consideration. A structured analysis was conducted to identify equipment, training, or research requirements for improved

The psychology of ongoing threat: relative risk appraisal, the September 11 attacks, and terrorism-related fears.

There are now replicated findings that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms related to the September 11, 2001, attacks occurred in large numbers of persons who did not fit the traditional definition of exposure to a traumatic event. These data are not explained by traditional epidemiologic "bull's eye" disaster models, which assume the psychological effects are narrowly, geographically circumscribed, or by existing models of PTSD onset. In this article, the authors develop a researchable model to explain these and other terrorism-related phenomena by synthesizing research and concepts…

Triad of Terror: Rapidly Progressive Austrian Syndrome in a 62-Year-Old Female.

We report a case of a 62-year-old female presenting with shortness of breath, who was subsequently diagnosed with Austrian syndrome. The patient had a complicated clinical course, including invasive central nervous system pneumococcal disease, pneumococcal bacteremia, and mitral valve vegetation with possible leaflet perforation. Despite aggressive treatment, her condition continued to worsen. We will discuss the clinical features of this disease, approaches to diagnosis and treatment, and outcomes in light of this rare condition.

A year of terror and a century of reflection: perspectives on the great influenza pandemic of 1918-1919.

BACKGROUND: In the spring of 1918, the "War to End All Wars", which would ultimately claim more than 37 million lives, had entered into its final year and would change the global political and economic landscape forever. At the same time, a new global threat was emerging and would become one of the most devastating global health crises in recorded history. MAIN TEXT: The 1918 H1N1 pandemic virus spread across Europe, North America, and Asia over a 12-month period resulting in an estimated 500 million infections and 50-100 million deaths worldwide, of which ~ 50% of these occurred within the f

Violence-related Versus Terror-related Stabbings: Significant Differences in Injury Characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the gap between injury epidemiology of terror-related stabbings (TRS) and non-terror-related intentional stabbings. BACKGROUND: Terror attacks with sharp instruments have multiplied recently, with many victims of these incidents presented to hospitals with penetrating injuries. Because most practical experience of surgeons with intentional stabbing injuries comes from treating victims of interpersonal violence, potential gaps in knowledge may exist if injuries from TRS significantly differ from interpersonal stabbings (IPS). METHODS: A retrospective study of 1615 pa

Acts of terrorism and mass violence targeting schools : Analysis and implications for preparedness in the USA.

To enhance the preparedness of US schools to acts of terrorism and mass violence, the landscape of threats against schools must first be understood. This includes exploring the global trends of acts of terrorism against schools, as well as looking specifically at the history of terrorism and acts of mass violence against schools domestically. This paper conducts a review of two databases in order to look at the trends in acts of terrorism and mass violence carried out against schools, and provides recommendations for domestic school preparedness based on this information.

The Relationship Between Posttraumatic Growth and Psychosocial Variables in Survivors of State Terrorism and Their Relatives.

The present study explores reports of growth in survivors and family members of victims of state terrorism (N = 254) in Chile from 1973 to 1990. The results indicate the presence of reports of posttraumatic growth (M = 4.69) and a positive and statistically significant correlation with variables related to the life impact of the stressful events (r = .46), social sharing of emotions (r = .32), deliberate rumination (r = .37), positive reappraisal (r = .35), reconciliation (r = .39), spiritual practices (r = .33), and meaning in life (r = .51). Reactions to terror attacks in ultra-orthodox jews: the cost of maintaining strict identity.

Traumatic events can shatter faith and beliefs. The responses of Ultra-Orthodox survivors of deadly terrorist attacks illustrate an effort to reconcile dreadful experiences with deeply embedded beliefs. Qualified clinicians prospectively evaluated self-reported and interviewer-generated posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and cognitive appraisal in Ultra-Orthodox (n = 20) and non-Ultra-Orthodox (n = 33) survivors of suicide bus-bombing incidents in Jerusalem. Ultra-Orthodox survivors reported higher levels of PTSD symptoms and more personal guilt. Their narratives reflected an unshak

[The terror from the outside--child survivors of the Spiegelgrund traumatic experiences in childhood and their effects].

Survivors of the Spiegelgrund (children's euthanasia programme in Vienna during National-Socialism) were interviewed. Psychoanalytical interviews were discussed in an interdisciplinary study group. The overcoming and dealing with the terrible past during childhood were discussed as well as the reactions to the interviews of the members of the study group. The theoretical frame was Anna Freud's work on child survivors of the Theresienstadt concentration camp: "An Experiment in Group Upbringing": Different factors for the survival and the working through afterwards are discussed as well as the d

Nigeria's war on terror: fighting dracunculiasis, onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, and schistosomiasis at the grassroots.

Africa's populous country, Nigeria, contains or contained more cases of dracunculiasis, onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, and schistosomiasis than any other African nation and ranks or ranked first (dracunculiasis, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis) or third (lymphatic filariasis) in the world for the same diseases. After beginning village-based interventions against dracunculiasis 20 years ago and confronting onchocerciasis a few years later, Nigeria has nearly eliminated dracunculiasis and has provided annual mass drug administration for onchocerciasis to over three quarters of that at-ris
