Sex differences in onset times of cutaneous thermal sensations across non-noxious to noxious heat intensities.

Sex differences in thermal perception are well documented, but how these differences vary across heat intensities remains unclear. This study investigated sex differences in perception of cutaneous warmth, hot, and pain sensations across contact temperatures ranging from near-threshold to clearly noxious levels. Eight healthy males and eight females were exposed to contact heat stimuli at 42, 46, and 50°C using a Peltier stimulator (6.25 cm2) applied to the left anterior thigh. Onset times for each thermal sensation were recorded, along with heat flux. At rest, skin temperature was significant

Neck cooling, with or without menthol mouth rinse, improves repeated-shuttle sprint performance and perceived thermal strain in hijab-wearing female futsal players in hot-dry indoor conditions.

PURPOSE: Female athletes wearing a sports hijab may experience greater heat strain during high-intensity intermittent exercise. This study examined the effects of menthol mouth rinse (MEN), neck cooling (NEC), and their combination (NEC + MEN) on repeated-shuttle sprint performance, physiological responses, and perceptual outcomes in hijab-wearing female futsal players exercising in hot-dry indoor conditions. METHODS: Twenty-five female players completed four randomized crossover trials conducted in a hot-dry environment (34 ± 1 °C, 20-30% RH; WBGT ≈ 31 °C). Each trial involved a 10 × 30-m ou

Thermoregulatory Responses with Size-matched Simulated Torso or Limb Skin Grafts.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to test the hypothesis that a simulated burn injury on the torso will be no more or less detrimental to core temperature control than on the limbs during uncompensable exercise-heat stress. METHODS: Nine nonburned individuals (7 men, 2 women) completed the protocol. On separate occasions, burn injuries of identical surface area (0.45 ± 0.08 m2 or 24.4% ± 4.4% of total body surface area) were simulated on the torso or the arms/legs using an absorbent, vapor-impermeable material that impedes sweat evaporation in those regions. Participants performed 60 min of treadmill

Air quality perception of pedestrians in an urban outdoor Mediterranean environment: A field survey approach.

Perception plays a significant role on people's response to preventive measures. In the view of public awareness, the aim of this study was to explore factors that affect air quality perception and to reveal its potential patterns. Air quality perception of individuals, in terms of dust and overall air quality, was examined in relation to air pollutants concentrations, meteorological variables, personal characteristics as well as their thermal sensation and health condition. The data used were obtained from environmental measurements, in situ and from stations, and questionnaire surveys conduc

Milder form of heat-related symptoms and thermal sensation: a study in a Mediterranean climate.

Mild heat-related health effects and their potential association with meteorological and personal parameters in relation to subjective and objective thermal sensation were investigated. Micrometeorological measurements and questionnaire surveys were conducted in an urban Mediterranean environment during a warm, cool, and a transitional season. The participants were asked to indicate their thermal sensation based on a seven-point scale and report whether they were experiencing any of the following symptoms: headache, dizziness, breathing difficulties, and exhaustion. Two thermal indices, Actual

Altered thermal sensitivity in neurons injured by infraorbital nerve lesion.

Nerve lesions are common injuries. While peripheral sensitivity is lost, the partially regenerating nerve undergoes a complex transformation, occasionally leading to persistent pain syndromes. Changes of thermal perception following nerve injury have received little attention. This study investigates the sensitivity of trigeminal neurons after infraorbital nerve lesion in guinea-pigs. Cultured trigeminal neurons innervating the area of denervation were identified by retrograde transport of DiI deposited at the site of the lesion. The standardized protocol consisted of cold and heat stimulation

The distribution of cutaneous sudomotor and alliesthesial thermosensitivity in mildly heat-stressed humans: an open-loop approach.

The distribution of cutaneous thermosensitivity has not been determined in humans for the control of autonomic or behavioural thermoregulation under open-loop conditions. We therefore examined local cutaneous warm and cool sensitivities for sweating and whole-body thermal discomfort (as a measure of alliesthesia). Thirteen males rested supine during warming (+4 degrees C), and mild (-4 degrees C) and moderate (-11 degrees C) cooling of ten skin sites (274 cm2), whilst the core and remaining skin temperatures were clamped above the sweat threshold using a water-perfusion suit and climate chambe

Psychophysical assessment of patients with posttraumatic neuropathic trigeminal pain.

This article reviews the utility of psychophysical approaches in the assessment of posttraumatic neuropathic trigeminal pain. Methods of quantitative sensory testing are derived from psychophysical principles and provide a widely accepted means for characterizing sensory dysfunction in patients who experience injury to the trigeminal nerve. No published study, however, has sought to compare sensory findings from trigeminal nerve-injured patients who develop neuropathic pain with those from trigeminal nerve-injured patients who remain pain-free. Moreover, sensory testing data from trigeminal ne

Responses to cold, heat, and pain increase locomotion in rats and are attenuated by pinealectomy.

The effects of pinealectomy on locomotor behavior responses to cold, heat or pain were assessed in freely moving rats. External cold (4 degrees C) or heat (36 degrees C) stress produced increases of locomotion (including horizontal and vertical movement, and total distance traveled), increases of number of turnings (including both clockwise and counterclockwise), and decreases of postural freezing in rats. In addition, pain (produced by intradermal injection of normal saline) was also shown to produce increases of locomotion (including horizontal and vertical movement, and total distance trave

Thermal and pain sensations evoked by microstimulation in the area of human ventrocaudal nucleus.

1. We have studied the sensations evoked by threshold microstimulation (TMS) in the area of the human principal sensory nucleus of the thalamus [ventralis caudalis (Vc)] in patients (n = 11) undergoing stereotactic surgery for the treatment of movement disorders and pain. Preoperatively, patients were trained to describe somatic sensory stimuli using a standard list of descriptors. This same list was used to describe sensations evoked intraoperatively by thalamic microstimulation. Stimulation sites (n = 216) were defined by location within the area where the majority of cells had a reproducibl

Reliability and Validity of a Novel, Portable Thermal Grill Illusion Apparatus Using Two Graphene Probes: An Initial Psychophysical Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: The thermal grill illusion (TGI) is a psychophysical phenomenon in which combined heat and cold stimulation evokes an illusory burning or painful heat sensation. Although TGI has potential for sensory assessment, conventional multi-probe apparatuses are often bulky and costly. This cross-sectional observational study conducted an initial psychophysical validation of a novel portable TGI device using two graphene probes. METHODS: Fifty-two healthy participants were evaluated using a novel 2-probe device and a previously used 8-probe apparatus. Concurrent validity and agreement were

ThermalTexture: Temperature-Integrated Surface Rendering Using Thermal Referral Induced by Texture Slip-Feedback.

Thermal-vibration feedback has been reported to elicit the thermal referral phenomenon, offering new possibilities for enhancing user experience. Yet, little research has explored whether thermal referral occurs in the presence of texture-slip feedback. To address this, we developed a custom haptic device capable of delivering integrated thermal and slip feedback to the middle and distal phalanges of an index finger. We primarily estimated the thermal referral occurrence under passive and active touch conditions across two different perceptual experiments, while each further examined its impac

No difference in core temperature or thermal sensation in male and female scuba divers using wetsuits or semi-drysuits in 22.6°C sea water.

INTRODUCTION: Scuba diving in water below thermoneutral temperature (< 30°C) can reduce core temperature and impair comfort and performance. Semi-drysuits are presumed superior to wetsuits because they presumably limit water entry into the suits, but changes in core temperature and thermal sensation have not been previously published in males and females wearing semi-drysuits. This study assessed the influence of anthropometrics and thermal protection from wetsuits and semi-drysuits on core temperature and thermal sensation in males and females performing recreational scuba dives. METHODS: Co

Changes to Ventilation, Vocalization, and Thermal Nociception in the Pink1-/- Rat Model of Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience significant vocal communication deficits. Findings in the Pink1-/- rat model of early-onset PD suggest that ultrasonic vocal communication is impaired early, progressively worsens prior to nigrostriatal dopamine depletion, and is associated with loss of locus coeruleus neurons, brainstem α-synuclein, and larynx pathology. Individuals with PD also demonstrate ventilatory deficits and altered sensory processing, which may contribute to vocal deficits. OBJECTIVE: The central hypothesis is that ventilatory and sensory deficits are p

Frigophobia: a case series from Sri Lanka.

Frigophobia is a condition in which patients report coldness of extremities leading to a morbid fear of death. It has been reported as a rare culture-related psychiatric syndrome in Chinese populations. An extensive survey of the literature yielded only six case reports. The present paper describes a series of 109 patients with frigophobia in Sri Lanka. The common clinical presentation was of patients initially examining their extremities for cold sensations, and then, with the onset of fear, covering themselves in layers of clothing, applying emollients, and staying near an open fire in an ef

Modulation of somatosensory profiles by spinal cord stimulation in primary Raynaud's syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND GOAL: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an effective antinociceptive treatment for various neuropathic pain syndromes. Apart from antinociceptive action, it may modulate overall somatosensory perception. This case report targets the question of whether SCS may alter quantitative sensory testing (QST) in a patient with primary Raynaud's syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report on a 44-year-old female patient with primary Raynaud's syndrome who had SCS via cervical and lumbar electrodes. QST was performed in a standardized manner assessing cold detection threshold (CDT) and warm

Thermoregulation in multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive neurological disorder that disrupts axonal myelin in the central nervous system. Demyelination produces alterations in saltatory conduction, slowed conduction velocity, and a predisposition to conduction block. An estimated 60-80% of MS patients experience temporary worsening of clinical signs and neurological symptoms with heat exposure. Additionally, MS may produce impaired neural control of autonomic and endocrine functions. This review focuses on five main themes regarding the current understanding of thermoregulatory dysfunction in MS: 1) heat sens

Origins of the sensory examination in neurology.

Formal testing of sensation as part of the neurological examination followed the improvements in examination techniques as well as advances in neuroscience. By the 1890s, the observation that temperature sense was frequently impaired at the same time that pain was appreciated led to the supposition that the two paths traveled closely. Through the works of Brown-Séquard and Edinger the existence of a crossed afferent tract was verified. The distinction between two sensory pathways was clear by 1898, when van Gehuchten reported a case of syringomyelia and suggested that the pain and temperature
