Are Oxidative Stress Biomarkers Sensitive to Environmental Concentrations of Chlorpyrifos Exposed to the Freshwater Crab, Zilchiopsis collastinensis (Decapoda; Trichodactylidae)?

Global trends in pesticide use can increase aquatic pollution and affect resident fisheries. Crabs exposed to organophosphate pesticides, such as chlorpyrifos, may increase production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), affecting the pro-oxidant/antioxidant balance. Zichiopsis collastinensis crabs were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of chlorpyrifos (0.1 and 0.5 µg L-1). Effects on the oxidative stress enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione S-transferases, glutathione reductase, and on thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and hydrogen peroxide concentrations we

Lipid peroxidation induced by meso-tetrakis[3,4-bis(carboxymethyleneoxy)phenyl] porphyrin on photosensitization in hepatic and tumor microsomes.

The ability of a novel porphyrin, meso-tetrakis[3,4-bis(carboxymethyleneoxy)phenyl]porphyrin (T3,4-CPP), to induce photodamage in subcellular membranes, in the form of rat hepatic and tumor microsomes, was evaluated with a view to locating suitable porphyrin derivative for possible use in photodynamic therapy. This water-soluble porphyrin, on exposure to visible light, induced a significant extent of membrane lipid peroxidation as assessed by the formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, lipid hydroperoxides and conjugated dienes. The peroxidation induced in hepatic microsomes is b

Antioxidant enzyme dynamics suggest the absence of oxidative stress in the canine endometrium across the estrous cycle.

Oxidative stress plays a vital role in female fertility, yet the mechanisms regulating oxidative balance in the canine endometrium remain poorly understood. This study investigates the dynamics of the antioxidant enzyme system in the canine endometrium, focusing on superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GSR), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST), along with thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and total cellular thiols. Enzyme activities were revealed in five different phases of oestrus cycle in 25 dogs, using a spectrophotome

Dietary Euterpe oleracea Mart. attenuates seizures and damage to lipids in the brain of Colossoma macropomum.

The Amazonian açai fruit (Euterpe oleracea) has shown promising anticonvulsant properties, comparable to those of diazepam (BDZ) in in vivo models submitted to pentylenetetrazole (PTZ). PTZ is a classic convulsant agent used in studies for the purpose of screening anticonvulsants and investigating the mechanisms of epilepsy. Herein, we aimed to determine, for the first time, the effect of dietary administration of lyophilized E. oleracea (LEO) on PTZ-induced seizures, using juvenile Colossoma macropomum fish (9.1 ± 1.5 g) as a model. A control diet (0.00% LEO) and two levels of LEO inclusion w

Overreaching-induced oxidative stress, enhanced HSP72 expression, antioxidant and oxidative enzymes downregulation.

Overreaching (OVR) is defined as the initial phase of overtraining syndrome and is known as a metabolic imbalance leading to short-term fatigue. Exercise increases reactive oxygen species production, which can oxidize intracellular structures impairing cell function and thus leads to OVR process. The aim of this work is to study the behavior of oxidative stress markers in subjects submitted to an OVR protocol. Thirty rats were divided in exercise and control group, and submitted to an 8-week-endurance training (ET) and a 3-week-OVR protocol. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs), rea

Caffeine potentiates methamphetamine-induced toxicity both in vitro and in vivo.

Ya-Ba, a combination of the two potent psychostimulants methamphetamine (METH) and caffeine (CAF), is commonly used by drug abusers in Thailand and neighboring countries. While the neurotoxic effects of METH are well documented, the toxicity of this combination is mostly unknown. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of this particular drug combination using both in vitro and in vivo models. We found that combined treatment of METH and CAF at individually non-toxic concentrations significantly decreased viability of human neuroblastoma SK-N-SH cells. The reduction in cell survival was acco

Ginsenoside-Rg1 from Panax notoginseng prevents hepatic fibrosis induced by thioacetamide in rats.

Panax notoginseng saponins have recently been reported to suppress liver fibrosis. Since ginsenoside-Rg1 is the most abundant component of P.notoginseng saponins, we investigated the effect of ginsenoside-Rg1 on experimental liver fibrosis in rats. Histological analysis revealed that ginsenoside-Rg1 significantly improved the extent of liver fibrosis in rats induced by thioacetamide. Ginsenoside-Rg1 markedly suppressed the serum levels of fibrotic markers and hepatic hydroxyproline content in rats treated with thioacetamide. Ginsenoside-Rg1 also reduced the serum levels of alanine transaminase

Continual Gram-negative bacterial challenge accelerates stroke onset in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats.

This study examined the effects of continual Gram-negative bacterial challenge on stroke onset. Stroke onset occurred significantly earlier in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) injected with a bacterial cell suspension of Gram-negative rods or lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) than in uninjected controls. Paralysis of the hindlimb, piloerection, hypokinesis, and hyperkinesis were observed in LPS-injected SHRSP but not in uninjected controls during stroke onset. The serum levels of NOx, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance, and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine increased in LPS-injected SHR
