Seroprevalence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum Antibodies Following Tick Bites: A Serosurvey in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Romania.

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis is an emerging tick-borne disease. Although Anaplasma phagocytophilum has been identified in vectors and animal reservoirs in Romania, evidence of human exposure has not yet been reported. This study aimed to generate initial evidence of human infection by evaluating A. phagocytophilum antibodies in individuals with recent tick exposure. We conducted a cross-sectional serosurvey between 2023 and 2024 at a tertiary care hospital in Bucharest, enrolling 80 participants 4 to 12 weeks following a tick bite. Serum IgG antibodies against A. phagocytophilum were detect

Retrospective Study of Tick Bites Associated with Neurological Disease in a Level Three University Hospital in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Ticks represent very important vectors of human and zoonotic pathogens, and tick-borne diseases (TBDs) are diagnosed with increasing frequency. Therefore, the aim of this retrospective study was to describe patients presenting with a complaint of tick bite in the emergency department (ED) of a large university hospital in Switzerland. METHODS: Data were collected by searching for keywords in the routine clinic database to identify cases from 1 July 2012 to 30 June 2020. The patients' data were screened for preexisting diseases and demographic and clinical characteristics. RESULTS

Tick bites in different professions and regions: pooled cross-sectional study in the focus area Bavaria, Germany.

BACKGROUND: As the vector-borne diseases tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme borreliosis (LB) are common in Germany and transmitted by tick bites, the aim of this study was to assess differences in the number of tick bites in various professions and regions across southern Germany to evaluate the differences in tick-associated risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The analysis is based on three cross-sectional studies that were conducted in 2016 and 2017 in two real-life settings and in one medical setting in Bavaria. All participants filled in a paper-based questionnaire about their history with t

Determinants and protective behaviours regarding tick bites among school children in the Netherlands: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most common tick-borne disease in the United States and Europe. The incidence is 13.4 per 100,000 inhabitants in the United States and more than 300 per 100,000 inhabitants in Europe. Children are at highest risk of LB. In the Netherlands in 2007, the incidence of tick bites in children between 10-14 years varied from 7,000 -11,000 per 100,000, depending on age. This study among Dutch school children aimed to examine the knowledge, perceived threat, and perceived importance of protective behaviour in relation to tick bites and their potential consequenc

A tick bite patient with fever and meningitis co-infected with Rickettsia raoultii and Tacheng tick virus 1: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of tick-borne pathogens are being discovered, including those that infect humans. However, reports on co-infections caused by two or more tick-borne pathogens are scarce. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old male farmer was bitten by a hard tick, presented with fever (37.7 °C), severe headache and ejection vomiting. Lumbar puncture was performed in the lateral decubitus. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was clear, and analysis showed severe increased pressure (320 mm H2O), mild leukocytosis (126.0 × 106/L, mononuclear cells accounting for 73%) and elevated total protei

After a tick bite in a tick-borne encephalitis virus endemic area: current positions about post-exposure treatment.

If a person suffers a tick bite in tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) endemic areas, there is uncertainty on post-exposure treatment of naïve (non-immune) persons in order to protect the patient against TBE. Particularly, there are no distinct positions on the use of TBE active immunization as post-exposure treatment. Of special concern is the possibility of antibody-dependent enhancement of infection and exacerbation of disease in case of post-exposure vaccination. Such phenomena have been reported for other flavivirus infections. In the past, immune globulin treatment was recommended, but these p

Southern Tick-Associated Rash Illness (STARI) in the North: STARI following a tick bite in Long Island, New York.

The most common clinical manifestation of Lyme disease is the characteristic rash, erythema migrans (EM). In the 1980s EM-like eruptions were reported in Missouri and other southeastern states. The EM-like eruptions, which were of unknown etiology, often followed the bite of the Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum) and the rash is called STARI (southern tick-associated rash illness). Although the Lone Star tick is found in the Lyme disease-endemic areas of New England and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States, STARI has been reported only once from the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

Following a tick bite: double infections by tick-borne encephalitis virus and the spirochete Borrelia and other potential multiple infections.

In Central Europe and large parts of Asia, tick-borne-encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme borreliosis caused by the spirochetal bacterium of the genus Borrelia are among the most common diseases transmitted by the bite of a tick. When in regions with overlapping TBE virus and Borrelia endemicity, a tick bite causes the victim to become ill, it is important that appropriate serological and other laboratory investigations form part of the differential diagnosis. Account must always be taken of the fact that a tick bite may be followed by a double infection with the TBE virus and Borrelia. For this reaso

Tick-bite fever in Zimbabwe. Survey of antibodies to Rickettsia conorii in man and dogs, and of rickettsia-like organisms in dog ticks.

As part of a study of tick-bite fever in Zimbabwe, the prevalence of antibodies to Rickettsia conorii in dogs and humans was examined. Blood samples were obtained from 184 dogs in different parts of the country and tested by indirect immunofluorescence. In all, 150 (82%) were positive at a titre of 1/40 or higher. Dogs from the south and east of the country showed very high seroprevalence compared with dogs from the main urban centre, Harare. Human serum was obtained from blood donors, from people attending clinics with non-febrile illness and from agricultural workers. Antibodies to R. conori

Histological staining of tick bite skin biopsies for spirochetes and Powassan virus RNA.

Ixodes scapularis is a vector of several human pathogens in the United States, including Borrelia burgdorferi, the cause of Lyme disease, and Powassan virus (POWV), an emerging cause of severe encephalitis. Skin biopsies from tick bite sites are frequently collected and tested for the presence of spirochetes (Borrelia spp.), which remain elusive. POWV testing is not performed despite the increasing incidence of POWV encephalitis. To determine the utility of staining skin biopsies for tick-borne pathogens, formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens from 2010 to 2023 were examined by hematoxylin

Infective Endocarditis Due to Q Fever From a Tick Bite: A Case Report.

Infection from Coxiella burnetti causes Q fever that manifests with vague symptoms. We report a case of an individual admitted to the hospital with recurrent fevers with a history of multiple tick bites. Further workup revealed examination and laboratory findings consistent with Q fever endocarditis. Fevers resolved with doxycycline and hydroxychloroquine. Our case highlights that suspicion for Q fever should be maintained in patients presenting to the hospital with fevers of unknown origin for prompt recognition and appropriate treatment.

Entomological risk of African tick-bite fever (Rickettsia africae infection) in Eswatini.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia africae is a tick-borne bacterium that causes African tick-bite fever (ATBF) in humans. In southern Africa, the tick Amblyomma hebraeum serves as the primary vector and reservoir for R. africae and transmits the bacterium during any life stage. Previous research has shown that even when malaria has been dramatically reduced, unexplained acute febrile illnesses persist and may be explained by the serological evidence of rickettsiae in humans. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We collected 12,711 questing Amblyomma larvae across multiple land use types in a savanna landscap

A Patient with SIADH, Urinary Retention, Constipation, and Bell's Palsy following a Tick Bite.

Introduction. Lyme disease is the most common vector borne disease in the USA caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. If untreated, Lyme disease can cause a variety of secondary symptoms often difficult to interpret. Some of the rare manifestations of Lyme disease include SIADH-like syndrome, enteroparesis, and urinary retention. Case Report. A 69-year-old male presented with anorexia and constipation and was found to have hyponatremia. Several days after admission, Bell's palsy developed and he experienced urinary retention requiring catheterization. Lyme disease was confirmed on serolo

Mammalian meat allergy emerges after tick bite: the alpha-gal syndrome.

Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is a hypersensitivity reaction to mammalian meat that develops after tick bite exposure. AGS was first described in 2009 and testing for the allergy has become available in the last decade. We report the case of a 56-year-old farmer with a history of frequent lone star tick bites who presented with a 7-year history of diffuse urticaria occurring hours after eating red meat. AGS is likely underdiagnosed because of the unusual presentation of the allergy, historic lack of available testing, and deficiency of physician knowledge about the condition. Recognition of AGS is

Stemming the Rising Tide of Human-Biting Ticks and Tickborne Diseases, United States.

Ticks and tickborne diseases are increasingly problematic. There have been positive developments that should result in improved strategies and better tools to suppress ticks, reduce human tick bites, and roll back tickborne diseases. However, we equally need to address the question of who is responsible for implementing the solutions. The current model of individual responsibility for tick control evolved from a scenario in the 1990s focusing strongly on exposure to blacklegged ticks and Lyme disease spirochetes in peridomestic settings of the northeastern United States. Today, the threat pose

Risk Factors for Bites and Diseases Associated With Black-Legged Ticks: A Meta-Analysis.

The emergence and spread of Lyme disease and other infections associated with black-legged ticks is causing a public health crisis. No human vaccines are currently available, and both diagnosis and treatment are sometimes ineffectual, leading to advocacy for self-directed preventative measures. These recommendations are widely communicated to the public, but there is limited evidence for their efficacy. We undertook a systematic review and mixed-effects meta-regression analysis of factors purported to increase or decrease risk of black-legged tick bites and tick-borne disease. Published articl
