21 patients studied had persistent or progressive chronic meningitis not associated with a demonstrable infectious or other disease, except Streptococcus milleri antigen in the cerebrospinal fluid of 1 patient. The cerebrospinal-fluid (CSF) abnormalities consisted of a moderate, predominantly mononuclear, pleocytosis, a sharp rise in CSF protein (mean 2.3 g/l), intrathecal synthesis of considerable quantities of oligoclonal immunoglobulin G, and, in half the patients, a fall in the CSF-glucose/blood-glucose ratio. In all patients symptoms began during summer or autumn. In 4 patients the onset

The diagnosis of acute neuromuscular paralysis includes central nervous system disorders, peripheral neuropathy, neuromuscular conduction block and muscle disease. Identification of the cause is largely a clinical problem but neurophysiological investigations are often essential and a few specific tests are helpful. The commonest cause is Guillain-Barré syndrome. Special precautions, especially monitoring vital capacity, must be taken to detect respiratory failure and avoid atelectasis and chest infection. In acute neuropathy there is an additional danger of cardiac arrhythmias which requires

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a zoonotic agent that causes acute central nervous system (CNS) disease in humans. In this study, we examined the pathogenic process following intracerebral infection with the Oshima strain of TBEV in a mouse model. Intracerebral infection resulted in dose-dependent mortality, and all mice died following challenge with 10(2) PFU or more of the virus within 10 days. Acutely necrotic neurons and widespread inflammation were observed throughout the CNS. We therefore conclude that mortality following intracerebral infection results from a direct CNS patholog

The tickborne encephalitis (TBE) serocomplex of flaviviruses consists primarily of viruses that cause neurologic disease; these viruses include Omsk hemorrhagic fever virus (OHFV), a virus that is genetically related to other TBE serocomplex viruses but that circulates in an ecologically distinct niche and causes markedly different human disease. The objective of this study was to examine a potential small-animal model for OHFV and to compare the pathology of infection with that of the neurotropic tickborne flavivirus, Powassan virus (POWV). POWV-infected BALB/c mice demonstrated typical arbov

BACKGROUND: The neuromuscular disorders encountered in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) encompass a broad spectrum of pathologies. These include acute disorders (eg, Guillain-Barre syndrome), acute-on-chronic disorders (eg, myasthenia gravis), progressive disorders (eg, muscular dystrophy), and disorders that develop in the PICU (eg, critical illness myopathy/polyneuropathy). Familiarity with the presenting features of these disorders is of paramount importance in facilitating timely diagnosis.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of the medical records of patients admitted to

BACKGROUND: While some studies have been published about the prognosis of the meningitic and encephalitic course of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), only few data exist about the long-term prognosis of TBE myelitis. The aim of the present prospective study therefore was to investigate such patients over a period of 10 years.
METHOD: In Baden-Württemberg between 1994 and 1999, 731 patients fell ill with TBE. Of them 81 (11%) suffered from encephalomyelitis. All patients were asked to participate in this study, 57 of whom agreed. Individual impairments were measured by allocating single scores fo

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are transmitted to humans primarily through the bites of infected mosquitoes and ticks. The leading cause of domestically acquired arboviral disease in the United States is West Nile virus (WNV) (1). Other arboviruses, including La Crosse, St. Louis encephalitis, Jamestown Canyon, Powassan, and eastern equine encephalitis viruses, also cause sporadic cases and outbreaks. This report summarizes surveillance data reported to CDC in 2015 for nationally notifiable arboviruses. It excludes dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses, which are primarily nondomestic v

Most diseases of horses with zoonotic importance are transmitted by arthropods. The vectors belong to two very distantly related groups, the chelicerate Ixodidae (Acari = ticks) and the hexapod Diptera (true flies). Almost all relevant species are predestined for transmitting pathogens by their blood-sucking habits. Especially species of Diptera, one of the megadiverse orders of holometabolan insects (ca. 150.000 spp.), affect the health status and performance of horses during the grazing period in summer. The severity of pathological effect depends on the pathogen, but also on the group of ve

The clinical spectrum of this remarkable non-syphilitic spirochaetosis (spirochaeta infection) of the nervous system is described in light of 53 further cases with reference to our earlier description of 47 cases. As the etiological diagnosis is not possible in all cases the knowledge of clinical courses is especially important. Males are affected almost twice as often as women. The disease is especially prevalent in the sixth decade. Usually, the syndrome begins in the warm season with exquisite pain and other sensory irritations in combination with marked malaise. Initial signs during the wi

Tick-borne encephalitis is transmitted by the tick ixodes ricinus. After the second world war an increase in the number of cases of encephalitis was observed and the neurotropic virus was isolated for the first time in 1948. Reservoir animals are mouse-like wild animals and also agricultural domestic animals. The infection is transmitted to humans through tick bites. It becomes apparent subjectively in headaches, vomiting, tiredness, giddiness and insomnia, and objectively in meningeal symptoms, extrapyramidal tremor, cerebellar ataxia, vestibular nystagmus and paresis. The treatment consists

The sequential pathology of Kyasanur forest disease (KFD) in mouse brain was assessed in this study. Kyasanur forest disease virus (KFDV) strain P9605 used in this study was confirmed by real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction targeting the NS5 gene. Mouse Lethal Dose 50 (MLD50) of the virus was determined by in-vivo mice inoculation test. One MLD50 of the KFDV was inoculated intra-cerebrally into 36 mice aged 2-3 weeks. Another group of 36 age-matched mice that served as control group were inoculated with plain media. Six mice each from infected and control groups were eutha

Eight patients with proven tick-borne encephalitis (early-summer meningo-encephalitis; central European encephalitis) were treated in 1979. The disease ran a severe course in four: one died after six weeks of coma and pneumonia with right-heart failure. Another patient is in coma for more than 40 weeks. A third patient had severe flaccid tetraplegia more than 10 weeks after initial coma. The fourth patient still had leg paresis after nine weeks, her left arm also being largely paralysed. This high incidence of severe forms of the disease differs from other published reports.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is an important human pathogen that can cause the serious illness tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). Patients with clinical symptoms can suffer from severe meningoencephalitis with sequelae that include cognitive disorders and paralysis. While less than 30% of patients with clinical symptoms develop meningoencephalitis, the number of seropositive individuals in some regions indicates a much higher prevalence of TBEV infections, either with no or subclinical symptoms. The functional relevance of these subclinical TBEV infections and their influence o

BACKGROUND: Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis (CME) is considered a multisystemic, life-threatening, rickettsial, and tick-borne disease that affects canine species and is caused by Ehrlichia canis (E. canis). Clinical signs of CME vary from asymptomatic to severe illness with three clinical phases. E. canis has the potential to infect humans.
AIM: This study aimed to provide recent information as there is limited data about the disease in Egypt. Therefore, this work was conducted to study the molecular prevalence of E. canis and evaluate the corresponding risk factors, hematology, biochemistry,
