Neglected Adult Tinea Capitis in South China: A Retrospective Study in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, from 2007 to 2021.

Tinea capitis (TC) in adults is much less frequently diagnosed in comparison to TC in children. In this study, we explored retrospectively adult TC in a specialized dermatology hospital, located in South China, during the years 2007-2021. Among 1037 TC cases, 168 (16.2%) patients were older than 18 years. The majority of adults with TC, 77.38% (130/168), were older than 40, with a peak in the age of 51-60 years (40/168, 23.81%). Before presenting at our hospital, many of patients did not got proper treatment due to misdiagnosis or simply did not consulted an appropriate clinic. 60.71% (102/168

Trichoscopy as a useful method to differentiate tinea capitis from alopecia areata in children at Zagazig University Hospitals.

Trichoscopy corresponds to the scalp, and hair dermoscopy has been increasingly used as an aid in the diagnosis, follow-up, and prognosis of hair disorders. Trichoscopy represents a valuable link between clinical and histological diagnosis. Tinea capitis (TC) and alopecia areata (AA) are considered the most common causes of hairless patches of the scalp in pediatrics. TC may have the same clinical appearance of AA, so dermoscopy has recently become a useful diagnostic tool for AA and TC, particularly in doubtful cases. The aim of this study is to identify the trichoscopic features of TC and AA

Comparison of missed appointments between children with tinea capitis and those with other skin diseases: A case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Treating tinea capitis (TC) requires frequent follow-ups, making adherence essential for successful outcomes. Identifying factors for missed appointments may improve treatment success rates and reduce costs. The objective was to compare missed appointments in children with TC to children with other skin diseases. The secondary objective was to identify predictors for missing appointments. METHODS: Retrospective data from 01 January 2017 to 01 May 2022 were collected from patient records of a dermatological outpatient clinic. Poisson regression was used to identify predictors. R

Insights in Trichoscopy: The Utility of Ultraviolet-Induced Fluorescence Dermoscopy in Diagnosis of Alopecia Areata and Tinea Capitis in the Pediatric Population.

Hair loss is a common and frequently distressing concern in the pediatric population. Diagnosis of hair loss in children can be challenging due to overlapping clinical features between conditions, resulting in the risk of delayed treatment. Ultraviolet-induced fluorescence dermoscopy (UVFD) is a novel supplement to polarized dermoscopy (PD) that can facilitate diagnosis of scalp disorders in children. We present two cases of hair loss (alopecia areata and tinea capitis) where utilization of UVFD revealed distinct trichoscopic features and facilitated accurate and efficient diagnosis.

Nutritional deficiencies as risk factors for incidence and treatment response of tinea capitis in children: a prospective clinical cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Tinea capitis is one of the most common fungal infections in children around the world. However, the relationship between nutrition and the risk of infection, as well as treatment outcomes, has not been thoroughly studied. This study aimed to explore the relationship between certain micronutrient deficiencies and the occurrence, severity, and treatment response of tinea capitis in children. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 280 children aged 2-12 years, with 140 confirmed cases of tinea capitis and 140 matched controls from three clinical locations. Detailed nutritio

An Undetected Case of Tinea Capitis in an Elderly Woman Affected by Dermatomyositis: How Trichoscopy Can Guide to the Right Diagnosis.

Dermatomyositis (DM) is an autoimmune disease that primarily affects the skin and muscles, but may also have a systemic involvement. The frequency of scalp involvement in DM varies from 28 to 82% and is often encountered as part of a DM flare. However, it frequently presents as a treatment-resistant disease, and patients reporting no improvement with conventional therapies require further investigation. We report a case of tinea capitis (TC) in a 79-year-old woman affected by DM with scalp involvement which did not respond to conventional therapies. Thanks to trichoscopy we could detect "comma

Optimizing Antifungal Therapy for Pediatric Tinea Capitis: A Narrative Review of Species-Specific Efficacy, Dosing Strategies, and Clinical Implications.

Pediatric tinea capitis, a common superficial fungal infection of the scalp, is primarily caused by Trichophyton and Microsporum species. While oral antifungal therapy remains the cornerstone of treatment, clinical outcomes vary considerably owing to differences in dosing practices and the species-specific response of the infecting organism. This narrative review synthesizes the existing literature to emphasize contemporary dosing regimens and species-directed efficacy on four widely used agents: griseofulvin, terbinafine, itraconazole, and fluconazole. Across studies published between 1997 an

Analysis of trichoscopic signs observed in 24 patients presenting tinea capitis: Hypotheses based on physiopathology and proposed new classification.

INTRODUCTION: Trichoscopy (hair dermoscopy) is a non-invasive and very useful technique for the diagnosis and follow-up of hair and scalp disorders. In tinea capitis, specific aspects of the hair shaft have been described, with the main ones being: comma hair, corkscrew hair, bar code-like hair (BCH) and zigzag hair (ZZH). METHOD: Herein we report on a retrospective study of 24 patients with tinea capitis (TC). All patients underwent trichoscopic examination and mycological culture. RESULTS: Trichoscopy was abnormal in all 24 patients showing hair-shaft abnormalities. We observed three types

An unusual case report: tinea capitis, verrucae vulgares and other infections in a girl with T and B cell disturbances.

Hereby described is a case of a young girl suffering from widespread dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton violaceum which proved intractable to accepted methods of therapy throughout a number of years. The girl was also found to have a history or recurrent respiratory tract infection and pyoderma in addition to verrucae vulgares, and Giardia lamblia in the gastrointestinal tract. Investigation revealed a marked immunological deficit seen in both the cellular and humoral system. It is suggested that in similar cases resistant to therapy it may be helpful to carry out a comprehensive investiga

Tinea capitis et barbae caused by Trichophyton tonsurans: A retrospective cohort study of an infection chain after shavings in barber shops.

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by dermatophytes. In Central Europe, it is mainly caused by zoophilic dermatophytes, as, for example Microsporum (M) canis or Trichophyton (T) mentagrophytes and increasingly by anthropophilic fungi. T tonsurans was commonly related to the Tinea gladiatorum, where transmission occurred between infected persons or via contaminated floors. OBJECTIVE: Reporting the transmission of this highly contagious dermatophyte for the first time via beard shaving and hairdressing in barber shops in Germany. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 18
