[Neurofeedback in therapy of tinnitus].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Biofeedback is known as a possibility to control physiologic processes like body temperature or heart frequency. Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback linked to aspects of the electrical activity of the brain such as frequency, location or amplitude of specific EEG activity. It has been successfully used in patients with closed head injury, hyperactivity disorder or epilepsy. PATIENTS/METHODS: In this study 40 patients with tinnitus were treated with neurofeedback. They trained to upregulate the amplitude of their alpha-activity and downregulate the amplitude of beta

Tinnitus in old age.

From the gerontological and geriatric study of 70-year-olds in Göteborg, Sweden, 674 persons were selected to participate in an investigation of tinnitus in old age. The subjects belonged to two cohorts, one of which was followed longitudinally at ages 75 and 79. Some 8-15% of the participants had continuous tinnitus and 20-42% occasional tinnitus. The prevalence of tinnitus was about the same for men as for women. There were significant correlations between tinnitus and exposure to occupational noise. Men with continuous tinnitus had, on average, been exposed to noise for 20-30 years, in cont

Electrical suppression of tinnitus.

The occasional suppression of tinnitus during electrical stimulation of the ear with positive currents has been investigated in 106 patients presenting with any degree of hearing impairment (whether of known or unknown aetiology) from profound deafness to near-normal pure-tone thresholds. Seventy-four percent of these patients presented with tinnitus localized in the ipsilateral ear at the time of examination. The suppression was totally effective in 60% of patients during stimulation through a round-window electrode. The suppression, partial or complete, was obtained in only 43% of patients w

Tinnitus: diagnosis and treatment.

Few conditions are seen as commonly by the otologist and are more poorly understood than subjective tinnitus. Tinnitus has been reported in as high as 80% of patients seen in an otolaryngology practice. This symptom is especially marked in patients with a hearing problem and can be so severe that it becomes incapacitating. Careful diagnosis and classification of tinnitus is important for understanding of the problem. Identification of the frequency and intensity of masking, using a tinnitus analyzer, is useful in selecting the form of treatment. Analysis of the history, physical findings and t

What Makes Tinnitus Loud?

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus loudness is a subjective measure, and it does not directly reflect either tinnitus severity or the impact on daily life. Nevertheless, loud tinnitus may be the most frequent clinical complaint of tinnitus patients. Factors contributing to the loudness of the phantom sound have rarely been studied. We evaluated both matched and self-rated loudness in a large sample of patients with tinnitus and analyzed the influencing factors among demographic, hearing, and tinnitus characteristics. METHODS: Two hundred ninety-nine patients with chronic tinnitus were enrolled. We evalua

Clinical practice guideline: tinnitus.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus is the perception of sound without an external source. More than 50 million people in the United States have reported experiencing tinnitus, resulting in an estimated prevalence of 10% to 15% in adults. Despite the high prevalence of tinnitus and its potential significant effect on quality of life, there are no evidence-based, multidisciplinary clinical practice guidelines to assist clinicians with management. The focus of this guideline is on tinnitus that is both bothersome and persistent (lasting 6 months or longer), which often negatively affects the patient's quality o

[Tinnitus treatment: neurosurgical management].

Tinnitus is a very frequent symptom affecting 10% of the general population. It corresponds to the perception of an internal noise that can severely impair the quality of life. Tinnitus management requires a multidisciplinary approach in which neuromodulation and neurosurgery tend to play major roles. Classification of tinnitus separates objective tinnitus (i.e., tinnitus that can be heard or recorded) from the more frequent subjective tinnitus (i.e., tinnitus only perceived by the patient). Objective tinnitus is either pulsatile synchronous with heartbeat or asynchronous. In the former, appro

Tinnitus and Tinnitus-Like Symptoms in Cerebral Venous Outflow Disorders: A Critical Review.

Venous pulsatile tinnitus and tinnitus-like symptoms associated with internal jugular venous outflow disturbance represent an emerging clinical topic with specific diagnostic and management challenges. A narrative review was conducted using English-language literature identified through searches of PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. The review focused on studies published through February 2026 that addressed venous pulsatile tinnitus, internal jugular vein stenosis or compression, cerebral venous outflow disturbance, imaging and hemodynamic assessment, and management strategies. Speech recognition thresholds correlate with tinnitus intensity in individuals with primary subjective tinnitus.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between tinnitus and speech audiometry results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this investigation, 314 patients with primary subjective tinnitus and 279 patients with sensorineural hearing loss, serving as a control group, were enrolled. All participants underwent comprehensive assessments, which included pure-tone and speech audiometry. RESULTS: In considering basic parameters, a slight predominance of females was noted in both groups, with left-sided and bilateral tinnitus being the most common types. There were no significant differences

What People with Tinnitus Want: A Survey of Desired Tinnitus Digital Therapy Features.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is the perception of sound when no sound is present. Due to its heterogenous nature, tinnitus can impact people differently. Tinnitus disorder occurs when the perception of tinnitus affects quality of life. Personalized digital mHealth therapy approaches to tinnitus treatment have been proposed to address the heterogeneity of tinnitus. To build self-efficacy in tinnitus management, there should be alignment between therapeutic objectives and the needs of end users. This survey was undertaken to learn the desirable features a digital therapy should have from the perspecti

Incidence of Self-Reported Bothersome Tinnitus Versus Tinnitus Diagnosis Among U.S. Army Soldiers.

PURPOSE: U.S. Army Soldiers undergo annual audiometric surveillance to facilitate prevention of auditory injury. Soldiers are screened for bothersome tinnitus and subsequently referred for a clinical audiological evaluation as warranted. Presumably, most Soldiers seen in the clinic for bothersome tinnitus receive a tinnitus diagnosis. The incidence of self-reported bothersome tinnitus at the time of annual audiometric surveillance and subsequent diagnosis of tinnitus in the medical record has not been examined to date. This study estimated the incidence of tinnitus diagnosis in a population of

Tinnitus characteristics and associated variables on Tinnitus Handicap Inventory among a Hungarian population.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a sound precepted without an external sound stimulus. Its background can be categorised into primary and secondary cases. The secondary cases include pathologies of the external, middle and inner ear. Tinnitus can be objective or subjective; the latter can only identified by the sufferer. Previous research results have shown that tinnitus significantly affects the quality of life and daily functioning. OBJECTIVES: To analyse the impact of tinnitus on the daily functioning and the possible influence of demographical data and tinnitus duration on it. METHODS: 630 patien

Clinical Findings That Differentiate Co-Occurrence of Hyperacusis and Tinnitus from Tinnitus Alone.

PURPOSE: We aimed to assess the characteristics of patients with concurrent tinnitus and hyperacusis, determine the best audiological criteria for predicting hyperacusis, and confirm whether objective evidence of changes in the brain exists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of patients with tinnitus who visited the hospital between March 2020 and December 2021 were reviewed. Data on accompanying hyperacusis, audiological profiles, and questionnaires including the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Beck Depression Inventory, and numerical rating scale were analyzed. Generalizable Sample-Efficient Siamese Autoencoder for Tinnitus Diagnosis in Listeners With Subjective Tinnitus.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)-based neurofeedback has been widely studied for tinnitus therapy in recent years. Most existing research relies on experts' cognitive prediction, and studies based on machine learning and deep learning are either data-hungry or not well generalizable to new subjects. In this paper, we propose a robust, data-efficient model for distinguishing tinnitus from the healthy state based on EEG-based tinnitus neurofeedback. We propose trend descriptor, a feature extractor with lower fineness, to reduce the effect of electrode noises on EEG signals, and a siamese encoder-decod

Stress and Tinnitus; Transcutaneous Auricular Vagal Nerve Stimulation Attenuates Tinnitus-Triggered Stress Reaction.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus can become a strong stressor for some individuals, leading to imbalance of the autonomous nervous system with reduction of parasympathetic activity. It can manifest itself as sleep disturbances, anxiety and even depression. This condition can be reversed by bioelectrical vagal nerve stimulation (VNS). Conventional invasive VNS is an approved treatment for epilepsy and depression. Transcutaneous VNS (taVNS) stimulating the auricular branch of the vagus nerve has been shown to activate the vagal pathways similarly as an implanted VNS. Therefore, taVNS might also be a thera

Confirmatory factor analysis of the Tinnitus Impact Questionnaire using data from patients seeking help for tinnitus alone or tinnitus combined with hyperacusis.

A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the Tinnitus Impact Questionnaire (TIQ) was performed. In contrast to commonly used tinnitus questionnaires, the TIQ is intended solely to assess the impact of tinnitus by not including items related to hearing loss or tinnitus loudness. This was a psychometric study based on a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of clinical data. Data were available for 155 new patients who had attended a tinnitus and hyperacusis clinic in the UK within a five-month period and had completed the TIQ. The mean age was 54 years (standard deviation = 14 years). The TIQ d
