In this report, we describe a case of difficult esophageal reconstruction using temporary banking of a jejunal free flap. This flap was temporarily placed on the patient's chest wall using the internal mammary vessels (IMVs) as recipient vessels. After 15 days, the jejunal flap was transferred to the neck region, and permanent coverage was provided using a pedicled latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap.

The Cooperative Human Tissue Network is a group composed of cooperating academic institutions that supply human tissues to researchers studying a wide range of neoplastic and other diseases. The experience of the Cooperative Human Tissue Network in establishing methods of prospective tissue collection and in developing tumor banks is discussed to aid institutions in establishing tissue resources for their local investigators, who may wish to use human tissues in current or future research projects. The advantages to pathology departments and to associated medical institutions of establishing a

Transplantation constitutes a rapidly changing field for medicolegal law-markers. Until two or three decades ago there were no laws governing organ transplants, and at least some of these processes fell within the realm of human experimentation. An extensive legislative work has been accomplished since then in order to catch up with the expeditious scientific progress. Transplantation is a definite medical process which requires a definite legal response. No wonder that some issues are dealt with by national laws in similar manners. Nevertheless, practice makes perfect, and recent legislations

During the past ten years, the efforts to improve and organize the national transplantation system in Croatia have resulted in a steadily growing donor rate, which reached its highest level in 2011, with 33.6 utilized donors per million population (p.m.p.). Nowadays, Croatia is one of the leading countries in the world according to deceased donation and transplantation rates. Between 2008 and 2011, the waiting list for kidney transplantation decreased by 37.2% (from 430 to 270 persons waiting for a transplant) and the median waiting time decreased from 46 to 24 months. The Croatian model has b

A tip injury of the left thumb was repaired via microsurgical medial plantar flap banking. The medial plantar flap was transferred temporarily to the lower abdominal wall and was anastomosed microsurgically to the deep inferior epigastric artery and vein as a banked flap. It was later grafted to the thumb in a manner similar to a pedicled flap. The flap was transferred successfully, and the tissue texture and bulk was sufficient, with considerable sensory recovery and minimal donor site deformity. This method may be worthwhile to consider as one of the options of digital tip reconstruction, an

BACKGROUND: One of the reasons for unsuccessful replantation is recipient site problems. In cases where proximal stump status cannot be predicted exactly, reamputation may be required depending on the result of infection and tissue necrosis. The ectopic banking method has been defined for this type of injury. In this study, we presented the amputated or devascularized upper extremity digit ectopic banking application results in our clinical practice.
METHODS: Nineteen digits (17 patients) banking ectopically were included in the study. All digits ectopically banked in the forearm volar of the

The B.C. Ear Bank was established in 1974 as a temporal bone laboratory devoted to the study of hearing loss and histological examination of temporal bones. It expanded its activities to the collection and preservation of homograft otologic tissue needed for the ever expanding field of ear surgery. The function of the ear bank in these two fields is discussed in detail.

University hospital bone banks are vital to tissue transplantation, providing safe bone allografts for surgical procedures. The bone bank at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) initially sourced femoral heads and knee slices from living donors, which were radiation-sterilized and frozen for internal orthopaedic surgeries. In 2015, through collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the bank obtained long bones from deceased donors. A 10-year retrospective analysis (2013-2022) evaluated the bank's nationwide distribution, which totalled 661 frozen bone allografts across 384 despatch batches.

PURPOSE: Cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive with a plastic disc (CTA-D) is the standard in-office treatment for corneal perforations but often requires reapplication because of reliance on surface adhesion. We developed a cufflink-shaped corneal plug that provides a sutureless intraocular seal by mechanical anchoring. This study evaluated feasibility of eye bank microkeratome production, ex vivo performance compared with CTA-D, and burst pressure testing in whole human globes.
METHODS: Cufflink plugs were produced from 1-month glycerin-preserved donor corneas by an eye bank technician using a micr

Dynamic consent (DC) was originally developed in response to challenges to the informed consent process presented by participants agreeing to 'future research' in biobanking. In the past 12 years, it has been trialled in a number of different projects, and examined as a new approach for consent and to support patient engagement over time. There have been significant societal shifts during this time, namely in our reliance on digital tools and the use of social media, as well as a greater appreciation of the integral role of patients in biomedical research. This paper reflects on the developmen

INTRODUCTION: The technical and quality aspects of organ culture as a storage method for human donor corneas are described.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data electronically stored since 1989 of > 41,000 corneas, processed in the Cornea Bank Amsterdam, are analysed. The technical information of eye banks collected in the Directory of the European Eye Bank Association (EEBA) is used as comparison. European Union (EU) directive for tissue banking and EEBA technical guidelines are references for the quality aspects.
RESULTS: Organ culture allows the storage of donor corneas up to 4-5weeks. The storage

PURPOSE: To establish a national consensus on contraindications for corneal donation for transplantation in Switzerland.
METHODS: Swisstransplant (SWT), the Swiss national foundation coordinating tissue and organ donations, convened a working group consisting of six national corneal surgeons and eye bankers and donation experts to create a contraindication list for corneal donation. The group reviewed available national and international guidelines and recommendations, while adhering to Swiss law and transplant regulations. In cases of opposing opinions, the group held follow-up meetings unti

Vascular allografts have been used for many years in patients with infection complications and when the patient lacks own autologous venous material. Cryopreservation has permitted the long term storage of these allografts, offering the optimal solution for particular clinical situations. For more than 20 years the European Homograft Bank has prepared, stored in the liquid nitrogen vapour below -130 °C and distributed various types of the quality controlled arterial allografts throughout the European centers and elsewhere. The tissues are prepared according to the existing European, Belgian, S

The research group takes samples for molecular genetical examinations from tumors removed during operations within ischemic time interval. Samples are stored in liquid nitrogen. Clinical data of these patients are recorded in an informatics system developed by the group. Patients are followed in an out-patient clinic set up for this purpose not financed by the National Health Insurance Fund. Tissue samples and follow up data are used to cooperate with molecular genetical laboratories.

OBJECTIVE: Donor human milk (DHM) is excess breast milk a woman donates to a human milk bank (HMB) for use by another infant. HMB requires operational sustainability to ensure consistent and equitable DHM supply. This review synthesises evidence from systematic reviews on how HMB services have been developed and scaled internationally. Results will inform the co-design of an evidence framework that incorporates governance, quality and sustainability criteria for HM banking.
DESIGN: An umbrella review was conducted following the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis. CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Emb

In Germany, bone allografts are widely used and their application in clinics has increased over the years. Successful use of allografts depends on many factors such as the procurement, processing, sterilization and the surgeon's surgical experience. Tissue banks have provided safe and sterile allografts for decades ranging from hard to soft tissue. Allografts are obtained from various tissues such as bone, tendon, amniotic membrane, meniscus and skin. An advantage of allografts is their wide applicability that has never been limited by indication restrictions thus providing a huge benefit for

AIM: To generate a national biobank made up of samples of the highest quality for the purpose of inciting basic research on gestational trophoblastic diseases (GTD).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three priority axes of research were defined to optimize the nature, method of collection, and storage of the samples. These are: to enhance our understanding of GTD, develop new diagnostic tests, and identify new therapeutic targets. The protocol for patient inclusion and sample processing was determined after extensive literature review and collaboration with international experts in the field of GTD.

This paper examines, from an Australian and international perspective, the phenomenon of population 'biobanks' (research platforms comprising collections of human genetic samples or 'biospecimens' and relevant personal information) and the legal challenges that this development presents. In particular, the paper focuses on the legal concept of consent and the tensions on the traditional understanding of consent that large-scale, long-term population biobanks exert. The aim of the paper is to review the operation of consent principles as they apply to population biobanks and to propose a way fo
