Functioning of unidirectional ventilation in flying hawkmoths evaluated by pressure and oxygen measurements and X-ray video and tomography.

Flying sphingids generate unidirectional ventilation with an inflow through the anterior thoracic spiracles and an outflow through the posterior thoracic spiracles. This phenomenon was documented by the CO2 emission and tracheal air pressure in split-chamber experiments in preceding studies. In the present study, we evaluated the function of the air pump mechanism by measuring the tracheal pressure and PO2 in the air sacs and monitoring the wing beat using photocells. Microelectrodes recorded the abdomen flexing muscles and abdominal transverse muscle septum. The crucial structure was the vert

3D analysis of the myenteric plexus of the human bowel by X-ray phase-contrast tomography - a future method?

OBJECTIVES: Light microscopical analysis in two dimensions, combined with immunohistochemistry, is presently the gold standard to describe the enteric nervous system (ENS). Our aim was to assess the usefulness of three-dimensional (3D) imaging by X-ray phase-contrast tomography in evaluating the ENS of the human bowel. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Myenteric ganglia were identified in full-thickness biopsies of the ileum and colon by hematoxylin & eosin staining. A1-mm biopsy punch was taken from the paraffin blocks and placed into a Kapton® tube for subsequent tomographic investigation. The samples

Future of Diagnostic Computed Tomography: An Update on Physicochemical Properties, Safety, and Development of X-ray Contrast Media.

Iodinated contrast media (CM) are utilized in approximately 40% of the 300 million computed tomography (CT) scans undertaken annually. This review focuses on the physicochemical properties and safety of iodinated CM, and the development of new x-ray CM, and it explores methods to optimize CT scanning parameters. It concludes that good x-ray CM should have high structural stability, hydrophilicity, and CT attenuation; low viscosity, osmolality, and protein binding; no metabolism and tissue accumulation; and a complete elimination.

[Cerebral lesions in the severe pregnancy induced hypertension: 61 cases of X-ray computed tomography of the brain].

Among 61 patients with severe pregnancy induced hypertension, cerebral lesions were detected on CT scans in 23 cases (37.7%). The positive rates were 5/25 cases in preeclampsia and 18/36 cases in eclampsia. The incidence rate of cerebral lesions in eclampsia was significantly higher than that in preeclampsia (chi 2 test, P < 0.05). Furthermore, it showed that patients with renal impairment and retinal changes were more susceptible to cerebral lesions (P < 0.05), through comparative study of the relationships between either the function of liver and kidney or retinal changes and cerebral lesion

[X-ray computed tomography in surgical indication of physiological section of the optic nerve. Apropos of 15 cases].

Optic nerve trauma induces loss of vision and absence of direct pupillary light reflex. Persistence of consensual pupillary light reflex excludes anatomical section. Trans ethmoidal-sphenoidal decompression relieves the optic nerve and allows an improvement of visual function. Ten patients among 15 surgical decompressions recovered visual function. There is a good correlation between improvement and the release of an anatomical nerve compression. Recognition of direct or indirect computed tomographic signs of optic nerve compression are essential in the surgical indications. The prognosis post

[MR tomography in lymphatic and leukemic bone marrow infiltrations. A comparison with scintigraphy and conventional x-ray diagnosis].

MR is the only noninvasive procedure that can demonstrate changes in the medullary space. If it is combined with bone marrow scintigraphy and conventional x-ray film diagnostics, it can yield a comprehensive diagnosis of bone marrow infiltrations in the regions of the pelvis, thighs and lumbar vertebral column in leukaemia or malignant lymphomas. The T1 relaxation times of the malignant infiltrations are enhanced compared with normal fatty marrow. MR tomography of the bone marrow is particularly suitable for determining the therapy or follow-up control of a malignant systemic disease.

Development of a cryogenic in situ mechanical loading device for synchrotron radiation x-ray computed tomography (SR-CT).

The study of material damage evolution under combined cryogenic temperature and mechanical stress is crucial for aerospace and cryogenic applications but hindered by a lack of suitable in situ characterization tools. This work presents the development and validation of a novel in situ tensile loading device compatible with synchrotron radiation x-ray computed tomography for operation down to 53 K. The device employs an innovative "three-layer chamber" design based on functional decoupling and sealed negative-pressure insulation principles, utilizes polyetherimide for its cryogenic and x-ray tr

Unary and Binary Dynamic Column Breakthrough Experiments with Carbon Dioxide and Nitrogen Imaged by X-ray Computed Tomography.

This study extends the digital adsorption (DA) method─i.e., adsorption experiments augmented with X-ray computed tomography (XCT)─from unary systems with strongly adsorbing CO2 to unary systems with weakly adsorbing N2 and to binary systems involving both species. Using this method, equilibrium adsorption isotherms on commercial activated carbon and zeolite 13X were measured for both gases at 294.15 K between 0.1 and 9 bar. Our analysis shows that X-ray attenuation by the bulk phase must be considered for weak adsorbates, while it is relevant only at elevated pressures for strong adsorbates. U

OPK_SNCA: Optimized prior knowledge via sparse non-convex approach for cone-beam X-ray luminescence computed tomography imaging.

BACKGROUND: The development of Cone-beam X-ray luminescence computed tomography (CB-XLCT) has allowed the quantitative in-depth biological imaging, but with a greatly ill-posed and ill-conditioned inverse problem. Although the predefined permissible source region (PSR) is a widely used way to alleviate the problem for CB-XLCT imaging, how to obtain the accurate PSR is still a challenge for the process of inverse reconstruction. METHODS: We proposed an optimized prior knowledge via a sparse non-convex approach (OPK_SNCA) for CB-XLCT imaging. Firstly, non-convex Lp-norm optimization model was e

Comparison of routine computed tomography and plain X-ray imaging for malleolar fractures-How much do we miss?

PURPOSE: Most patients with ankle arthrosis have a history of ankle fracture. Evaluation of malleolar fractures solely on X-ray may be insufficient to identify many pathologies that potentially contribute to ankle arthrosis, with a consequent poor prognosis. We investigated the pathologies that may be overlooked in malleolar fractures evaluated solely on plain X-ray. METHODS: During 2012-2019, 65,479 patients attended our Emergency Department, of which 6508 complained of an ankle joint problem. X-rays indicated a fracture in 454 of these patients. Patients with isolated, simple fracture of th

A comparison of computed tomography, X-ray and Lodox® scans in assessing pediatric skull fractures using piglets.

Skull fractures are common in children both due to abuse and accidental incidences. The accurate detection of these fractures may therefore be critical. The aim of this study was to investigate the reliability of CT, X-ray, and Lodox® scans, the latter which has not previously been evaluated and is commonly employed in South Africa, in detecting the number, location and type of pediatric skull fractures. Blunt force trauma was inflicted with a mallet on ten piglet skulls, which were CT, X-ray, and Lodox® scanned and then macerated. The number, location, and type of skull fractures visible usin

Enhanced radiation exposure associated with anterior-posterior x-ray tube position in young women undergoing cardiac computed tomography.

Given the current increase in the incidence of coronary artery disease in younger women as well as the high lifetime risk of developing an x-ray-induced malignancy in this population, we aimed at assessing chest radiation in 206 women ≤55 years old undergoing coronary calcium scoring (CACS) by using a Monte Carlo simulation tool. Our data indicate that the simulated radiation dose of the female breast during CACS depends substantially on the starting position of the x-ray tube, with an almost 2 times excess of breast radiation exposure being measured during anterior-posterior tube positioning.

Bone acquisition in healthy children and adolescents: comparisons of dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and computed tomography measures.

The effect that growth has on dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) bone measurements is yet to be fully defined. The purpose of this study was to determine the best method for optimizing pediatric bone measurements using DXA. Height, weight, body mass index, skeletal age, and Tanner stage of sexual development were determined for 64 healthy boys and 60 healthy girls ages 6-17 yr. DXA of the lumbar vertebrae was performed to measure bone mineral content (BMC, grams) and areal bone mineral density (aBMD, grams per square centimeter), and geometric corrections were used to calculate volumetric

Nanostructural evolution during carious and demineralisation process of human dentine using small angle X-ray scattering tensor tomography.

Dental caries, one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases worldwide, is characterised by the progressive deterioration of the structure and mechanical properties of dental hard tissues. In human teeth, dentine is the most abundant mineralised tissue, forming the primary support material. To assess changes in the mechanical properties of dentine caused by dental caries and acid erosion, it is crucial to understand the relationship between organic and inorganic dentine components and their organisation into a 3D anisotropic structure at the nanoscale. Over the past 20 years, alterations

Ligand Confinement for Fast-Decay Cu─I Chain Scintillators Enabling High-Resolution X-ray Imaging and 3D Tomography.

Chain-like one-dimensional (1D) copper(I) iodide cluster complexes are promising scintillator candidates due to their enhanced x-ray absorption, robust frameworks, and excellent photostability. However, their emission efficiencies remain significantly lower than those of zero-dimensional analogues. Herein, we propose a ligand-confinement strategy that employs sterically hindered, electronically tuned pyrimidine-based bridging ligands to simultaneously boost x-ray excited luminescence (XEL) and accelerate decay dynamics in 1D Cu-I cluster scintillators. Rigid, compact bidentate ligands increase

3D imaging of neuronal inclusions and protein aggregates in human neurodegeneration by multiscale x-ray phase-contrast tomography.

This study leverages x-ray phase-contrast tomography (XPCT) for detailed analysis of neurodegenerative diseases, focusing on the three-dimensional (3D) visualization and quantification of neuropathological features within fixed human postmortem tissue. XPCT with synchrotron radiation offers micrometer and even sub-micron resolution, enabling us to examine intra- and extraneuronal aggregates and inclusions such as Lewy bodies (LBs), granulovacuolar degeneration (GvD), Hirano bodies (HBs), neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), β-amyloid plaques, and vascular amyloid deposits in three dimensions. Fast Degradation of Solid Electrolyte in Initial Cycling Processes, Tracked in 3D by Synchrotron X-ray Computed Tomography.

Solid-state lithium batteries are developing rapidly as a promising next-generation battery, while challenges still persist in understanding their degradation processes during cycling due to the difficulties in characterization. In this study, the 3D morphological evolution of the Li3PS4 solid electrolyte was tracked during electrochemical cycles (plating and stripping) until short circuit by utilizing in situ synchrotron X-ray computed tomography with sufficient spatial and temporal resolution. During the degradation process, cracks in the electrolyte alternately generated from the two electr
