Under your nose: a rare finding during dissection provides insights into maxillary supernumerary teeth.

BACKGROUND: A supernumerary tooth was found during anatomical dissection. The position of this tooth, still impacted in the maxilla, and the associated pathology make this a rare case. METHODS: During dissection by dental students of the sagittally-sectioned head of a cadaver, a supernumerary tooth was identified in the mid-palatal area. Further dissection revealed a swelling with a thin bony covering related to the crown of the tooth. The maxilla was removed en bloc and radiographic examination, CT scanning, electron microscopy and histology were undertaken. RESULTS: The tooth had a crenula

Progressive tooth pattern changes in Cilk1-deficient mice depending on Hedgehog signaling.

Primary cilia function as critical sensory organelles that mediate multiple signaling pathways, including the Hedgehog (Hh) pathway, which is essential for organ patterning and morphogenesis. Disruptions in Hh signaling have been implicated in supernumerary tooth formation and molar fusion in mutant mice. Cilk1, a highly conserved serine/threonine-protein kinase localized within primary cilia, plays a critical role in ciliary transport. Loss of Cilk1 results in severe ciliopathy phenotypes, including polydactyly, edema, and cleft palate. However, the role of Cilk1 in tooth development remains

Supernumerary teeth: Report of four unusual cases.

Supernumerary tooth denotes duplication of tooth in the normal series. It is a developmental anomaly and has been argued to arise from multiple etiologies. These teeth may remain embedded in the alveolar bone or can erupt into the oral cavity. The supernumerary tooth might cause esthetic and/or functional problems, especially if it is situated in the maxillary anterior region. Complications reported were delayed or prevented eruption of succedaneous teeth, displacement or rotation, crowding of the affected region, abnormal diastema, dilacerations, cystic formation, and sometime eruption into t

Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor associated with other lesions: case report with cone-beam computed tomography findings.

The calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) simultaneously occurring with other lesions at different locations in the same patient is rare. We report a patient with CCOT associated with an odontoma, a supernumerary tooth, and a dentigerous cyst simultaneously occurring in the maxilla. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images showed a well-defined expansile lesion with internal calcification, high-density masses surrounded by low-density area, and a supernumerary tooth at the anterior maxilla. Posterolaterally to these lesions, an embedded canine with pericoronal radiolucency was detected

A clinical report of nonsyndromic concomitant hypo-hyperdontia.

Although hypodontia and supernumerary teeth are often considered as mutually exclusive conditions, this case report presents an unusual case of hypodontia and a supernumerary tooth occurring simultaneously. An adolescent male was referred to the local hospital department regarding upper arch crowding. Plain film radiographs confirmed the congenital absence of both lower lateral incisors in addition to an unerupted conical supernumerary tooth in the maxillary midline. This condition has been called hypo-hyperdontia and in this paper, we discuss the clinical findings and treatment planning consi

Further studies of a model for the etiology of anomalies of tooth number and size in humans.

A multifactorial model based on an underlying continuous distribution of tooth size, with thresholds determining hypodontia and supernumeraries, has been proposed [1]. Our aim is to investigate this model by comparing tooth morphology of affected patients and their first degree relatives with normal controls. An image analysis system [2] was used to measure teeth on study models of controls, patients with hypodontia of varying degrees and location, first-degree relatives of hypodontia index cases, and patients with supernumerary teeth in the maxillary incisor region. Mesio-distal crown size in

Antagonistic Functions of USAG-1 and RUNX2 during Tooth Development.

Supernumerary teeth and tooth agenesis are common morphological anomalies in humans. We previously obtained evidence that supernumerary maxillary incisors form as a result of the successive development of the rudimentary maxillary incisor tooth germ in Usag-1 null mice. The development of tooth germs is arrested in Runx2 null mice, and such mice also exhibit lingual epithelial buds associated with the upper molars and incisors. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential crosstalk between Usag-1 and Runx2 during tooth development. In the present study, three interesting phenomena wer

Prevalence of Hypodontia and Supernumerary Teeth in Patients Attending Private Pediatric Dental Clinic in Lebanon.

Purpose: Because of the high rate of agenesis and supernumerary teeth in orthodontic patients and the lack of studies in Lebanon that document the prevalence of those anomalies, the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of hypodontia and supernumerary teeth in patients attending a pediatric dental office and examine the associated factors. Study design: This was a cross-sectional design study. The patients were clinically examined followed by panoramic radiograph. Two calibrated investigators have examined the radiographic films and diagnosed the dental anomalies. Tooth agenesis an

Non-syndrome associated multiple supernumerary teeth: a report of two cases.

Multiple supernumerary teeth are usually associated with syndromes. On the contrary, multiple supernumerary teeth without association with any syndromes are very rare. This article presents a report of two cases with multiple supernumerary teeth not associated with any syndrome and emphasizes the routine advice of orthopantomogram whenever a single supernumerary tooth is detected irrespective of whether the patient has any syndrome or not.

[A case of a so-called congenital tooth appeared in maxilla].

The congenital teeth are not only classified by Massler et al. as a natal tooth that has erupted at birth and a neonatal tooth that erupts at neonatal period, but also divided into a normal deciduous tooth and a supernumerary tooth. The congenital teeth are mostly found in the mandibular anterior region, but extremely rare in other regions. The authors met a rare case, that had a so-called congenital tooth in the maxillary anterior region, which was a supernumerary and fused tooth. The case was a boy patient, 4 months of age, who visited the pedodontic clinic, of Ohu University Dental Hospital

Analysis of dental anomalies in the Siberian mole, Talpa altaica (Insectivora, Talpidae).

We re-examined tooth variation in specimens of the Siberian mole, Talpa altaica, from the collection of the Siberian Zoological Museum and discuss the mechanisms of dental evolution. The number of teeth counted in 1789 specimens ranged from 34 to 47, and supernumerary, absent, and connate teeth were observed. The most frequent tooth anomaly was an absent tooth in the premolar region (200 maxillary first premolars and 190 mandibular third premolars), which does not support Fujita and Kirino's terminal reduction hypothesis in the mandible [Fujita T, Kirino T. Triplication in permanent teeth: A rare case report.

Fusion is an anomaly manifested in both deciduous and permanent dentitions. Triple tooth refers to the union of three separate tooth entities. It can involve the normal dentition or supernumerary teeth. Triplication is rarely encountered in deciduous and permanent dentition with an incidence of 0.02%. The case presented herein describes a rare case of triplication in permanent maxillary incisors and supernumerary teeth in a 15-year-old female.

The usefulness of cone beam computed tomography for treatment of complex odontoma.

BACKGROUND: Odontomas are odontogenic tumours, resulting from epithelial growth and differentiated mesenchymal cells, clinically asymptomatic, and often associated with changes to the eruption of the permanent dentition. In recent years, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been used in the diagnosis and treatment planning of this condition. CASE REPORT: A 9-year-old male patient, with an unerupted permanent maxillary right central incisor (tooth 11) presented to our clinic. The panoramic radiograph showed impaction of tooth 11 with incomplete root development and the suspicion of an odon

Rare molariform supernumerary teeth: Why are they bilateral?

Anterior supernumerary teeth in the permanent dentition may be supplemental or rudimentary. Rudimentary types are further classified as conical, tuberculate, and molariform. The molariform type has been only rarely reported. We report a rare variety of anterior supernumerary teeth - the molariform type, occurring bilaterally and in association with a midline supernumerary tooth. We also suggest a hypothesis for the bilateral occurrence of supernumerary teeth.

An Intranasal Ectopic Tooth in an Adult.

Ectopic teeth can be supernumerary, deciduous or permanent, and can occur in a wide variety of locations outside of the cavity of the mouth. While supernumerary teeth are rare, supernumerary intranasal teeth are rarer. It is not clear what causes the eruption of teeth intranasally; however, trauma, infection, radiation, and developmental defects may be significant factors in their etiology. We report the case of a 33-year-old woman who presented in the otorhinolaryngology department with complaints of rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction, snoring, pain in the forehead, and bad odor that did not impro

Morphologic characteristics, location, and associated complications of maxillary and mandibular supernumerary teeth as evaluated using cone beam computed tomography.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the location and morphologic characteristics of supernumerary teeth and to assess the frequency and extent of root resorption of adjacent teeth using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: CBCT scans of 82 patients with supernumerary teeth in the maxilla and mandible were evaluated by two orthodontists independently. Data regarding the type, shape, and three-dimensional (3D) location of the supernumeraries including the frequency and extent of root resorption of adjacent teeth were recorded and evaluated for possible associations. RESULTS: The st

Occulocerebrocutaneous syndrome: a case report.

Occulocerebrocutaneous syndrome is a rare condition characterized by orbital cysts and skin tags. The presence of supernumerary teeth has not previously been associated with this syndrome. A primary supernumerary tooth with a permanent supernumerary successor was found in this case. This highlights the importance of very careful examination when assessing children with syndromes.
