Expression and Role of Colony Stimulating Factor 1 Receptor During Odontogenesis.

In osteopetrotic mice with homozygous inactivating mutations in the colony stimulating factor 1 (Csf1op/op) or its receptor (Csf1r-/-) gene, teeth fail to erupt due to severe reduction in osteoclastogenesis. Dental abnormalities have been described in the unerupted teeth of these models, but it remains unclear whether these defects arise from direct roles of CSF1R in odontogenesis or indirectly from impaired bone remodeling associated with failed eruption. Here, we examined the spatiotemporal expression of CSF1R during tooth development and inhibited CSF1R pharmacologically in utero using PLX5

Genotypes and Phenotypes of Patients With TSPEAR-Related Disorder: Evidence of a Predominant Dental Phenotype.

TSPEAR (chr. 21q22.3) encodes a protein involved in tooth development and is predominantly expressed in the enamel knot. Biallelic loss of function variants in TSPEAR cause ectodermal dysplasia, tooth agenesis and sensorineural hearing loss. However, the role of TSPEAR in auditory processes is unclear. This study aimed at better delineating the allelic and clinical spectrum of TSPEAR-associated disorders. We identified homozygous and compound heterozygous causative variants in TSPEAR [NM_144991.3] in 11 patients from seven families. Abnormalities in tooth number and shape (conical teeth and to

Dental characteristics in Williams syndrome: a clinical and radiographic evaluation.

Williams syndrome is a rare congenital syndrome with distinctive craniofacial features, cardiovascular abnormalities, and behavior characteristics including mental retardation. The dental abnormalities have received scant attention in previous literature. The aim of this study was to describe dental characteristics in individuals with Williams syndrome. In a group of 41 individuals more than 10 years of age, 40.5% had agenesis of one or more permanent teeth and 11.9% had agenesis of 6 permanent teeth or more. The mesio-distal and labio-lingual dimensions of permanent tooth crowns were measured

Unusual presentation of 'u-shaped' impacted maxillary central incisor with intranasal root: successful surgical management.

BACKGROUND: Dilacerations is a tooth deformity characterized by an angulation between crown and root causing non-eruption of the tooth. It generally occurs following trauma to the deciduous dentition apices of which lie close to the permanent tooth buds. According to Neville, maxillary and mandibular incisors contribute only approximately to 1% of the incidence of dilacerated teeth. CASE DETAILS: A 15 year old male patient reported with chief complaint of missing anterior teeth in the left side of maxillary arch. Radiographic evaluation showed impacted maxillary left central incisor. The radi

Dental and Temporomandibular Joint Pathology of the California Mountain Lion (Puma concolor couguar).

Skulls from 91 California mountain lions (Puma concolor couguar) were examined macroscopically and radiographically. The majority of the skulls were from young adult animals (57.1%). The skull specimens were from 42 male (46.1%) and 34 female (37.4%) animals, while the gender was unknown for the remainder. The majority (94.5%) of teeth were present for examination. Only 11 teeth were identified as absent congenitally; five of these teeth were maxillary first molar teeth and three were maxillary second premolar teeth. Abnormal tooth morphology was identified in 3.5% of teeth. The most common ab

[Recognizing and preventing disturbances in eruption].

Disturbances in eruption and related problems are quite common in permanent dentition but rare in deciduous dentition. For the timely recognition of disturbances in eruption, knowledge of the normal development of dentition is essential. Disturbances in eruption comprise disturbances in which eruption does not occur at all, in which it is delayed or incomplete, or in which the normal direction of eruption is influenced. If identified early enough, many undesirable dental conditions can be avoided or their seriousness can be limited. A possible impacting of permanent cuspids, for example, can b

Multiple dental anomalies and aggressive periodontitis: a coincidence or an association?

Aggressive periodontitis (AgP) comprises a group of rare, often severe, rapidly progressive forms of periodontitis mostly characterized by an early age of clinical manifestation and a distinctive tendency for cases to aggregate in families. Abnormal dental morphology and position have been associated with severe periodontal diseases. The purpose of this paper is to report a case of multiple dental anomalies associated with AgP. This paper reports a case of unusual association of multiple dental anomalies to AgP. Clinical findings and history led to the diagnosis of localized AgP, and radiologi

[Orthodontic treatment of a malocclusion with a compromised central upper incisor].

An 11-year-old girl presented at an orthodontist asking for the correction of the crooked position of her upper and lower front teeth. In addition, the patient was concerned about the abnormal shape and size of tooth 21. There was a disto-occlusion, crowding and tooth gemination of tooth 21 with the shape of a dens invaginatus. The tooth, moreover, was infected. Teeth 21 and 14 were extracted as part of the treatment. By means of a guided transposition, tooth 23 was brought to the extraction site of tooth 21. Treatment was performed with hybrid fixed appliance techniques.

[Diagnosis and orthodontic treatment strategy of complete canine transposition].

Tooth transposition is a challenge for orthodontists, especially in correcting the order of teeth. At present, the literature on transposition canines mainly focuses on epidemiological studies and case reports, and no systematic treatment guidance has been formed. In this article, the definition and classification, epidemiology and etiology, imaging diagnosis, treatment and risk control of transposed canines are systematically described in order to provide reference for clinical practice.

Oral and Dental Examination Findings in European Polecats (Mustela putorius).

Dental and oral diseases in the domestic ferret have been reported, but comparison with their closest wild relative, the European polecat (Mustela putorius), is lacking. Dental and orofacial pathology was evaluated by means of visual examination and dental radiographical analysis of 234 museum skulls. Most of these (70.5%) originated from Austria and the remainder came from seven other European countries. Linguoverted mandibular second incisor teeth were noted in 77% of the skulls. There were 7,268 (91.4% of all potential) teeth available for examination. Few (0.3%) were presumed congenitally

Coexistence of fusion and concrescence of primary teeth: in a child with Down syndrome.

Down syndrome is one of the most common congenital anomaly. It is most frequently caused by trisomy of chromosome 21. Other causes can be mosaicism and translocation. Such patients are commonly encountered in routine dental practice. This syndrome has wide range of medical and dental abnormalities. This paper presents a unique case of fusion and concrescence of retained primary teeth in a child with Down syndrome. The incidence of such anomalies is quite low in these cases. Thus, a better awareness of such conditions on part of a dental practitioner will aid in the provision of enhanced dental

Lobodontia: the unravelling of the wolf teeth.

Abnormalities of tooth shape and size generally coexist, as both are determined during the morphodifferentiation stage of odontogenesis. This report describes a case of lobodontia exhibiting multiple dental anomalies of which, "fang like" cuspids, multituberculism of molars, hypodontia along with severe generalized microdontia are distinctive. Radiographic features, diagnostic convolutions, differential diagnosis and clinical significance have also been highlighted.

Unusual case of labial and lingual talon cusps.

Talon cusp is an uncommon developmental anomaly affecting the anterior teeth, characterized by cusp-like projections, usually presenting on the lingual surface of the affected tooth. The occurrence ranges from 0.73% to 8% of the population. Talon cusp has been associated with other dental anomalies such as dens invaginatus, odontomas, and impacted teeth; associations with somatic anomalies such as Mohr's, Rubenstein-Taybi, and Sturge-Weber syndromes have also been reported. Only a few cases of labial talon cusp have been reported and only one previously published report exists documenting talo

Primary failure of tooth eruption: a unique case.

Primary failure of tooth eruption rarely occurs. This case represents a rare clinical situation and appears to reflect a generalized disturbance in the eruptive process, inasmuch as (1) deciduous and permanent dentition are affected, (2) incisors, molars, and premolars are involved in all quadrants, (3) skeletal and craniofacial growth are within normal limits, and (4) no systemic/genetic anomalies were detected. This is the first such case reported in the literature; diagnosis and management are discussed.
