Overview of complications secondary to tongue and lip piercings.

In recent years, intraoral and perioral piercings have grown in popularity among teenagers and young adults. This is of concern to dental and medical professionals because of the risks and complications for oral, dental and general health. The risks and complications associated with tongue and lip piercings range from abnormal tooth wear and cracked tooth syndrome to gingival recession and systemic infections. In this report, we provide an overview of possible problems associated with oral piercings that may be encountered by dentists.

Charcoal-based mouthwashes: a literature review.

The commercial marketplace has seen a rapid increase in the number of over-the-counter charcoal-containing mouthwashes. The purpose of this systemic review was to examine the clinical and laboratory evidence supporting therapeutic claims of efficacy and safety of use of charcoal-based mouthwashes. Secondly, the product labels and information of 36 commercially marketed charcoal mouthwashes were reviewed for active ingredients. Only 8% of charcoal mouthwashes contained an active ingredient, such as cetylpyridinium chloride or chlorhexidine. There is insufficient evidence to substantiate the the

Recent findings in classification of osteogenesis imperfecta by means of existing dental symptoms.

The findings are based on a clinical investigation conducted on forty-nine patients suffering from osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), as well as on a questionnaire study in which 117 osteogenesis imperfecta-affected persons or their parents were involved. The survey established pathological tooth discolorations as well as tooth abrasions. Dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI) was more frequently found in primary teeth than in permanent teeth. There were no gender-specific differences. Radiological abnormalities were found in both, abraded and/or discolored teeth, as well as in clinically normal appearing

[The erosive effect of various drinks, foods, stimulants, medications and mouthwashes on human tooth enamel].

Two forms of non-carious dental disorder - ero- sive tooth hard tissue loss and dental erosion - have been increasingly observed in recent years. Dental erosion is the chemical loss of dental hard substances caused by exposure to acids not de- rived from oral bacteria. Mechanical forces from, for example, the tongue, the cheeks or tooth- brushing, increase loss of partly demineralized tooth surfaces and the cumulative loss of dental hard tissue is defined as erosive tooth wear (ETW). Dental hard tissue losses that occur be- cause of very frequent acid exposure, such as through increased vomiti

Influence of Toothbrushing on the Antierosive Effect of Film-Forming Agents.

This study evaluated the influence of toothbrushing on the antierosive effect of solutions containing sodium fluoride (225 ppm/F), stannous chloride (800 ppm/Sn), sodium linear polyphosphate (2%/LPP), and their combinations, and deionized water as negative control (C). Solutions were tested in a 5-day erosion-remineralization-abrasion cycling model, using enamel and dentin specimens (n = 8). Erosion was performed 6 times/day for 5 min, exposure to the test solutions 3 times/day for 2min, and toothbrushing (or not) with toothpaste slurry 2 times/day for 2 min (45 strokes). Surface loss (SL) was

Congenital Loss of Permanent Teeth in a Patient With Congenital Insensitivity to Pain With Anhidrosis due to 2 Novel Mutations in the NTRK1 Gene.

Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA), also known as hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type IV, is an extremely rare autosomal recessive disorder. This study investigated the oral and craniofacial manifestations of a 7-year-old Chinese boy affected by CIPA and identified 2 novel mutations in the NTRK1 gene, and a new feature of the disorder was identified. The patient had typical features, including insensitivity to pain, anhidrosis, and mental retardation; recurrent fractures and osteoporosis also were noted. His oral and craniofacial manifestations included congen

An in vitro screening assay for dental stain cleaning.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to develop an in vitro model for stain removal from natural enamel for the assessment and comparison of oral hygiene products. METHODS: Bovine teeth (n = 8 per group) were ground/polished to provide flat enamel specimens and ferric-tannate deposits were precipitated onto the enamel surfaces. The ferric-tannate stained enamel specimens were brushed using an in vitro tooth-brushing simulator with slurries containing commercially available toothpaste products, dental abrasive particles, and sodium tripolyphosphate (STP) solutions of different concentrations. Radiological features of hereditary opalescent dentin.

A case of hereditary opalescent dentin is described, which showed the same clinical and radiological features as those reported previously. However, there was no evidence of osteogenesis imperfecta. While a diagnosis of type II dentinogenesis imperfecta was therefore made, this case also had features characteristic of type III dentinogenesis imperfecta. Treatment by means of an overdenture is described.

Variability of clinical dentin substrates.

Clinical trials remain the only conclusive research of dentin adhesive performance, but variables unique to the oral environment may influence the results. Dentin variability is one factor that may account for extreme variations in clinical evaluations. Despite the encouraging results of laboratory studies, clinical trials with adhesive systems have been disappointing. Current adhesives are reported to react with dentin surfaces by chemical and/or micro-mechanical mechanisms. Dentin surfaces, such as cervical abrasions, are subject to intraoral changes and dentin tubules commonly become obtura

Non-carious tooth conditions in children in the UK, 2003.

BACKGROUND: The 2003 Children's Dental Health Survey is the fourth of the 10-yearly surveys of children's oral health. AIM: To report the prevalence of three non-carious tooth conditions in children in the UK. METHOD: A representative sample of children five, eight, 12 and 15 years of age were examined by calibrated examiners in schools across the UK. The dental examination included accidental damage to incisors, tooth surface loss (TSL) and enamel opacities (age 12 only). A postal questionnaire sought parental and child views on marks on teeth which could not be removed by brushing. RESULT

Case Report: Case report: Rapidly progressing tooth wear dominated by intrinsic and extrinsic erosion.

Tooth wear is multi-factorial presenting as a combination of abrasion, attrition, and erosion. This case report represents a case of combined tooth wear in a 46-year-old Indo-Trinidadian male, with a predominant erosive component with both the clinical signs and features of intrinsic and extrinsic erosion. This patient case is unique since the wear predominated by dental erosion has occurred rapidly evidenced by the physical clinical appearance of a lack of compensation and the upper left premolars and molars relatively unaffected by the overall effects of tooth wear. This lack of compensation

Tooth brushing, tooth wear and dentine hypersensitivity--are they associated?

Evidence suggests that patients suffer the painful symptoms of dentine hypersensitivity when dentine is exposed and the dentinal tubule system is opened to the oral cavity to allow stimuli to trigger a neural response in the pulp via a hydrodynamic mechanism. The processes needed to localise lesions of dentine hypersensitivity include loss of enamel and/or gingival recession. Whilst tooth brushing with or without toothpaste appears to cause minimal wear to enamel (in the absence of acids), circumstantial evidence implicates tooth brushing with gingival recession and exposure of dentine. Other
