Silicification of the medial tooth in the blue crab Callinectes sapidus.

Observations of cuticular structures mineralized with silica within the Crustacea have been limited to the opal teeth of copepods, mandibles of amphipods, and recently the teeth of the gastric mill in the blue crab Callinectes sapidus. Copepod teeth are deposited during premolt, with sequential elaboration of organic materials followed by secretion of silica into the tooth mold. The timing of mineralization is in stark contrast to that of the general integument of crustaceans in which calcification is completely restricted to the postmolt period. To determine the timing of molt-related deposit

Mineralization disturbances of the developing rat molar induced by mono- and bisphosphonates.

Morphological changes have been reported previously in the developing dental tissues of the rat molar following administration of mono- or bisphosphonates. However, few studies have been published on the relationship between these and the possible mineralization disturbances. Two monophosphonates, phosphonoformic and phosphonoacetic acids, and two bisphosphonates, dichloromethylene bisphosphonate (Cl2MBP) and 1-hydroxyethylidene-1, 1-bisphosphonate (HEBP) in a dosage of 10-30 mg P/kg b.w. were injected in 5 day old rats and the induced changes analyzed by microradiographic and histologic exami

Use of new targeted cancer therapies in children: effects on dental development and risk of jaw osteonecrosis: a review.

New targeted cancer therapies such as bisphosphonates, denosumab, and bevacizumab are routinely used in adult for the past decades. Their introduction into pediatric medicine is more recent that means there is a paucity of data on long-term effects on dental development and on the risk of osteonecrosis of jaw. This study aimed to outline adverse effects of new targeted cancer therapies on oral cavity including dental abnormalities observed in pediatric population treated with these molecules and the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). The impact of bisphosphonates and denosumab on bone rem

Dental anomalies in craniofacial microsomia and condylo-mandibular dysplasia: A retrospective study of 103 patients.

INTRODUCTION: Craniofacial microsomia (CFM) and camel-hump condylo-mandibular dysplasia (CMD) are developmental disorders affecting the mandible that share common clinical features. This study aimed to investigate and compare the dental anomalies (DA) between the two entities for differential diagnosis and to propose appropriate treatment. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study was based on panoramic radiographs of patients diagnosed with CFM or CMD. DA were evaluated using the classification reported by Bilge. Delayed tooth eruption on the affected side was noted based on a compar

[Stages of formation and calcification of the third molar (radiographic study of 500 Mexican children and adolescents)].

Five hundred orthopantomograph radiographs of mexican children and adolescent from 7 to 18 tears old were reviewed in order to establish the third molar formation and calcification stages and the most frequent anomalies related to these teeth. We find that tooth bud presence is between 9 and 11 years; Third molar is absent in 32.4% of the population; 7.4% of the molars presented early formation stage malposition; Therefore oligodontia diagnosis and third molar malposition can not be done before 13 years of age.

The reverberations of traumatized primary dentition: a practitioner's perspective.

UNLABELLED: The traumatized primary teeth have a great clinical significance because it not only have consequences on itself but also on its succedaneous developing permanent teeth due to its close anatomical relationship. The extent of severity is adjudged by the type of trauma and the age of the child at the time of trauma. For instance, avulsion and intrusive injuries present with high percentage of developmental disturbances in permanent teeth than subluxation and extrusive injuries. When considering the age of the child at the time of trauma, consequences are less severe in children over

Dental findings in a child with osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis (OS-CS): a case report.

The dental management of an 8-year-old girl with osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis (OS-CS) is described. The girl presented with various oral abnormalities. The aim of this case report was to describe in detail the dental findings in a patient with OC-CS and the precautions to be taken when planning treatment. In the present case, many dental anomalies, such as delayed eruption of the permanent teeth, obliteration of the dental pulp, short roots, fused roots and taurodontism, were detected. In patients with OS-CS, routine dental care from an early stage is recommended to manage this a

Detecting calcified pulp stones in patients with periodontal diseases using digital panoramic and periapical radiographies.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Pulp stones are discrete calcified masses appearing in the dental pulp of healthy, disease and unerupted teeth. They are presented freely within the pulp tissue or attached and embedded in any part of coronal and radicular dentin. Here, the purposes of this study were to identify the presence of pulp stones in periodontal patients using digital panoramic and periapical radiographies, and to determine the association with gender, age, tooth type and dental arch. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study on selected records of 465 dental samples obtained between J

A Cross-Sectional Cohort Study of the Effects of FGF23 Deficiency and Hyperphosphatemia on Dental Structures in Hyperphosphatemic Familial Tumoral Calcinosis.

Hyperphosphatemic familial tumoral calcinosis (HFTC) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in FGF23, GALNT3, KLOTHO, or FGF23 autoantibodies. Prominent features include high blood phosphate and calcific masses, usually adjacent to large joints. Dental defects have been reported, but not systematically described. Seventeen patients with HFTC followed at the National Institutes of Health underwent detailed clinical, biochemical, molecular, and dental analyses. Studies of teeth included intraoral photos and radiographs, high-resolution μCT, histology, and scanning electron mi

Ultrastructure of early mineral deposition during hyaline layer formation in rat molars.

There is no consensus on whether the first mineralized layer, the hyaline layer, that is juxtaposed to root dentine is a variety of dentine or cementum or even a tissue of epithelial origin. Some suggest that there is no intermediate tissue between the acellular extrinsic fibre cementum (AEFC) and the root dentine. Here, to study hyaline layer formation and mineralization we examined by transmission electron microscopy the early stages of root development in upper molars from 10 to 13 day old Wistar rats. In addition to conventionally processed material, undemineralized and unstained sections

Cementogenesis reviewed: a comparison between human premolars and rodent molars.

BACKGROUND: Cementum continues to be the least-known mineralized tissue. Although recent advances in the field of molecular biology have contributed to an understanding of the involvement of molecular factors in cementum formation during development and regeneration, cementogenesis on a cell biological basis is still poorly understood. Virtually nothing is known about cementoblast origin, differentiation, and the cell dynamics during normal development, repair, and regeneration. This review describes the recent findings of cementogenesis on roots of human premolars and opposes them to those of

Reparative bone-like tissue formation in the tooth of a systemic sclerosis patient.

AIM: To report a case of reparative bone-like tissue formation in the tooth of a patient with systemic sclerosis. SUMMARY: A 58-year-old Japanese female patient with systemic sclerosis was referred because of tooth fracture. Cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) revealed multiple root resorption and the unclear transition from alveolar bone to root profile. A sample from a fractured tooth was analysed histologically. Haematoxylin and eosin-stained sections revealed the irregular replacement of pulp and dentine by bone-like tissue. Calcinosis was noted in various parts of the body and a his

The treatment of traumatized permanent anterior teeth: case report & literature review. Part I--Management of intruded incisors.

A case is reported in which an intruded incisor was initially treated by an endodontic dressing with calcium hydroxide and then extruded using a removable orthodontic appliance. A follow-up examination seven years after completion of endodontic therapy and bleaching showed a favourable response. A review of the relevant literature indicates that intrusion occurs in five to twelve per cent of luxation cases. In this type of injury maximum damage occurs to the pulp and all supporting structures because the tooth is driven into the alveolar process. Complications which have been reported include:
