Dental caries (tooth-decay) is caused by biofilms harboring polymicrobial communities on teeth that leads to the onset of localized areas of enamel demineralization. Streptococcus mutans has been clinically associated with severe caries in childhood. Although commensal bacteria can combat S. mutans using self-generated antimicrobials such as hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ), constant sugar-rich diet consumption disrupts microbial homeostasis shifting toward cariogenic community. Recently, Streptococcus oralis subsp. tigurinus strain J22, an oral isolate, was identified as a uniquely potent H2 O2 pro

Dental caries is a disease that affects people of all ages since demineralization and remineralization of tooth surfaces occur in everyone's mouths, and caries lesions develop when there is an imbalance between demineralization and remineralization. In this way, teeth are exposed to a risk of caries. Prevention strategies aiming at "zero caries" and treatments aiming at "tooth recovery and regeneration" are the two main areas of caries research, and both basic and clinical research are required in these fields. The following future perspectives of caries research were identified: The disease c

White spot lesions (WSL) and incipient caries on enamel surfaces are the earliest clinical outcomes for demineralization and caries. If left untreated, the caries can progress and may cause complex restorative procedures or even tooth extraction which destroys soft and hard tissue architecture as a consequence of connective tissue and bone loss. Current clinical practices are insufficient in treating dental caries. A long-standing practical challenge associated with demineralization related to dental diseases is incorporating a functional mineral microlayer which is fully integrated into the m

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is a chronic microbial disease, characterized by progressive enamel demineralization. Improved understanding of its pathogenesis has shifted dentistry toward minimally invasive biomimetic strategies such as Casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP). Chitosan, a natural polysaccharide with antibacterial and biomimetic mineralization properties, has recently emerging as a promising alternative. Hence, this study compared the remineralization efficacy of CPP-ACP and chitosan hydrogel on artificially induced enamel lesions on primary enamel.

Dental caries, one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases worldwide, is characterised by the progressive deterioration of the structure and mechanical properties of dental hard tissues. In human teeth, dentine is the most abundant mineralised tissue, forming the primary support material. To assess changes in the mechanical properties of dentine caused by dental caries and acid erosion, it is crucial to understand the relationship between organic and inorganic dentine components and their organisation into a 3D anisotropic structure at the nanoscale. Over the past 20 years, alterations

Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) is considered a biocompatible agent that promotes the remineralization of dental hard tissue; however, its antibacterial efficacy is under scientific discussion. Therefore, this investigation aimed to specify the inhibitory effects of disaggregated nano-hydroxyapatite (DnHAP) on regrown biofilms and demineralization. Regrown biofilm models of single-species (Streptococcus mutans), dual-species (S. mutans and Candida albicans), and saliva-derived microcosm biofilms were established in vitro. Repeat treatment with DnHAP was applied to biofilms. The viability, lactic ac

UNLABELLED: White spot lesions (WSLs) are demineralized lesions of the enamel that form in the presence of bacterial plaque, affecting the aesthetics by modifying the refractive index of the enamel, giving the characteristic "chalky" aspect. They have various causes, including fixed orthodontic treatments, improper hygiene, fluorosis and genetic factors.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Considering the latest need for dental aesthetics and the popularization of fixed orthodontic treatments, the need to effectively treat WSLs has increased. The objective of this research is to review the development of

Background Early detection and non-invasive methods to treat early caries lesions using new remineralizers are at the heart of today's caries management. The goal of the study is to develop a novel strontium-doped nano-hydroxyapatite paste, analyze its chemical composition, and evaluate the remineralization potential. Methodology Co-precipitation was used to create strontium-doped nano-hydroxyapatite, which was used to make dentifrice. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) were used to analyze the elements in the recently produced strontium-doped nano-h

The effectiveness of fluoride in caries prevention has been convincingly proven. In recent years, researchers have investigated the preventive effects of different fluoride formulations on erosive tooth wear with positive results, but their action on caries and erosion prevention must be based on different requirements, because there is no sheltered area in the erosive process as there is in the subsurface carious lesions. Thus, any protective mechanism from fluoride concerning erosion is limited to the surface or the near surface layer of enamel. However, reports on other protective agents sh

BACKGROUND: Enamel etching for brackets is usually done with phosphoric acid. Er:YAG lasers have been recently used for this purpose with conflicting results. The effects of lasers on tooth demineralization and the effects of different combinations of laser treatments and bonding agents were evaluated in this study.
METHODS: The enamel contents of fluorine, calcium oxide and phosphorus pentoxide (P(2) O(5)) were analysed using acid etching, laser treatment or both. The tensile bond strength of metallic and ceramic brackets using Transbond XT and Fuji Ortho LC were also tested, using acid etch

This study investigated the multifunctional oral cavity simulator (MOCS) in terms of microbial composition, functional profile, and dentin root demineralization. Microcosm biofilms were grown on dentin using human saliva for 4, 7, and 14 days, with exposure to sucrose and a mucin-enriched medium. Biofilms were analyzed for microbial viability and composition through CFU count and 16S-rRNA gene sequencing. Demineralization was quantified by percentage surface hardness change (%SHC), mineral loss (ML), and lesion depth (LD). The results showed microbial viability at all time points. After 7 days

Unlike other fluoride-based caries preventive agents, silver diamine fluoride (SDF) can simultaneously prevent and arrest coronal and root dentine caries. The profound clinical success of SDF has drawn many clinicians and researchers to study the mechanism of SDF in arresting dentine caries. This critical review discusses how silver and fluoride contribute to caries arrest, in terms of their effects on bacteria as well as on the mineral and organic content of dentine. Silver interacts with bacterial cell membrane and bacterial enzymes, which can inhibit bacterial growth. Silver can also dope i

Orthodontic therapy, like any other medical intervention, in addition to its benefits carries the risk of potential complications and is associated with adverse effects-including periodontal problems, external root resorptions, pulpal changes, enamel damages (demineralization, discoloration, attrition), temporomandibular disorders, infective endocarditis, soft tissue damages, discomfort, pain and the risk of either aspiration or indigestion of medical instruments and appliances. Usually these effects are multifactorial in origin- most often a result of interactions between the patient, the den

Due to gingival recession both enamel and root dentine are at risk of developing caries. Both tissues are exposed to a similar environment, however there is not a validated model to evaluate the effect of fluoride on these dental substrates simultaneously. Hence, this study aimed to validate a caries model to evaluate the effect of fluoride to prevent demineralization on enamel and root-dentine. Streptococcus mutans UA159 biofilms were formed on saliva-coated bovine enamel and root dentine slabs (n = 12 per group) mounted in the same well of culture plates. The biofilms were exposed 8×/day to

The causes of tooth discoloration are varied and complex but are usually classified as being either intrinsic, extrinsic or internalized in nature. Dietary chromogens and other external elements deposit on the tooth surface or within the pellicle layer either directly or indirectly to form extrinsic discoloration. Stains within the dentine or intrinsic discoloration often results from systemic or pulpal origin, while internalized stains are the result of extrinsic stains entering the dentine via tooth defects such as cracks on the tooth surface.
