OBJECTIVE: To test for an association of periodontitis and tooth loss with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
METHODS: The third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) is a nationally representative cross-sectional survey of noninstitutionalized civilians. We included participants aged > or = 60 years who had undergone both musculoskeletal and dental examinations. RA was defined based on American College of Rheumatology criteria. Dental examinations quantified decayed and filled surfaces, missing teeth, and periodontitis. Periodontitis was defined as at least 1 site exhibiting

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Males carry a disproportionate burden of cardiovascular disease. Because males also bear a higher burden of periodontal disease, we investigated the existence of gender differences in the postulated relationship between periodontal infections, tooth loss, and subclinical atherosclerosis.
METHODS: A total of 1710 randomly enrolled participants between the ages of 45 and 75 with no history of myocardial infarction or stroke received a clinical periodontal examination, carotid scan using high-resolution B-mode ultrasound, and extensive measurements for conventional cardio

Over the past decade there has been a huge increase in the understanding of the molecular basis of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT). Additionally there has been a better delineation of the neurophysiological deficits and clinical problems associated with CMT. This paper reviews the current molecular basis of CMT and the electrophysiological, clinical and phenotypical characteristics of the various subtypes, followed by a discussion of novel and promising therapeutic interventions that potentially could be used as part of a treatment regimen for CMT. These interventions may involve attempts to

The aim of this study was to describe the initial signs and symptoms in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT-1A). Twelve secondary cases with CMT-1A were serially evaluated. Ages at initial clinical examination ranged between 1 month and 5 years (mean, 2 years) and final ages between 6 and 23 years (mean, 13 years). First signs of the disease were detected at initial or upon serial examinations in all 12 patients at ages ranging between 1 and 10 years (median, 4 years). The most frequent signs were lower limb areflexia in 12, difficulty in heel walking in 8, nerve enlargement in 6, atrophy

OBJECTIVES: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type I (CMT1) is a hereditary sensorimotor neuropathy causing variable degrees of handicap. The risk for relevant disability in respect to genetic counselling is unknown. An attempt was made to define it.
METHODS: Disability and ambulation of 50 patients with CMT1 were scored by the Hauser ambulation index score and the Rankin scale. Rankin score 2 was subdivided into 2a (independent without relevant slowness) and 2b (independent, though at the cost of excessive time consumption). The sickness impact profile was assessed and compared with patients 6 mon

The foot deformities in CMT follow certain general patterns; however, like the underlying motor failures that cause them, the deformities present in each patient are unique, and care must be individualized. There is no simple algorithm that can be applied to all patients. The hindfoot, forefoot, and toe deformities in CMT all ultimately are interconnected. As a general rule, it makes sense to address the plantar fascia, then proceed from the hindfoot to the forefoot in analyzing the deformities and in surgery. Releasing the plantar fascia may alter the amount of bony correction required in any

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is a hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy that exhibits progressive muscular atrophy in the limbs, beginning with the lower extremities. It is now understood to be a heterogeneous group of disorders that can be differentiated both clinically and genetically. In Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type II C, axonal neuropathy, diaphragm weakness, and vocal cord paralysis are described within kindreds. We used laryngeal electromyography to study a patient with this disorder. This technique has potential in the diagnosis of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type II.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease (also called Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathy) is an inherited peripheral neuropathy with a prevalence rate of 1 in 2,500. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A), the most common autosomal dominant form of the disease, is associated with a duplication of a segment of chromosome 17 (17p11.2). In this report we present a three-generation family with CMT1A where simple sequence repeats (di- or tri-nucleotide repeats, also called microsatellites) were used in conjunction with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to identify the duplication. The presence of

One hundred four cases of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) in 52 families were identified within a defined area in northern Sweden corresponding to a prevalence rate of 20.1 cases per 100,000 (Dec 31 1991) for all subtypes. The prevalence of CMT type I was 16.2 per 100,000. The distribution of cases was not uniform. The prevalence rate is compared with previous prevalence studies focusing on Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease or hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN). Three patients were classified as the distal spinal muscular atrophy type of CMT and one patient was not possible to classify

Peroneal muscular atrophy (Charcot-Marie-Tooth-disease) is a hereditary disease of the peripheral motor and sensory neurons. In most patients the distal extremities are affected but involvement of the cranial nerves has also been described. We describe a 58 year old patient suffering from this disease accompanied by bilateral hearing loss. Audiometric examinations over a period of 10 years showed no progression and indicate a neural hearing loss. This was finally verified by auditory potentials (EAEP); J V and J III were prolonged, indicating a neural origin of hearing loss. Thus the lesion mu

A clinical, genetic, electrophysiological and ultrastructural study of a large kinship with peroneal muscular atrophy is reported. There was a noteworthy homogeneity in the phenotype as well as in the electrophysiological characteristics encountered in 15 affected members aged between 7 and 72 years. The symptoms appeared first in the second decade of life and stabilized by the fourth decade. There was no evidence of linkage of the neuropathy gene to the Duffy blood group locus on chromosome 1. The electrophysiological data in this family as well as the ultrastructural findings confirm that th

The author reports his experience on Refsum's disease and that gained after personally examining in detail 64 patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease over the past ten years. The "cerebellar" inco-ordination in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (with or without distal wasting) and in Refsum's disease is analysed. Some variations in the motor and sensory neuropathy of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and Refsum's disease are discussed. The adequacy of motor conduction velocity in genetically distinguishing types of the above mentioned familial peripheral neuropathies is reviewed. Data on the neuropathy

The ocular findings are described in nine patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth muscular atrophy, who were also classified as suffering from Type I hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy on the basis of genetic, clinical and electromyographic studies. Although only three patients admitted to visual symptoms and all nine patients had full vision in both eyes, combined visual evoked potential and contrast sensitivity testing revealed optic nerve involvement in one or both eyes of seven patients. Four patients showed impaired accommodation and tonic pupils, and electroretinography revealed pigmentos

BACKGROUND: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is a hereditary neuropathy characterized by progressive sensory and motor deficits. Over the past decade, the volume of CMT-related publications has increased steadily. This study aimed to examine global publication trends, key contributors, collaborative networks, and emerging research hotspots in CMT through bibliometric analysis.
METHODS: Publications related to CMT from 2014 to 2024 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. VOSviewer 1.6.20, CiteSpace 6.3.R1, and the R package "bibliometrix" were used to analyze annual publicatio

BACKGROUND: Heterozygous variants in SLC12A6 have recently been shown to cause dominant Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT). We aim to characterise the phenotype of patients with previously reported and novel heterozygous variants in the gene and understand any genotype-phenotype correlation.
METHODS: Patients were clinically and genetically assessed in sites from Europe, Australia, Brazil and the USA. All patients underwent whole exome or whole genome sequencing. Variants were classified using American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics criteria.
RESULTS: Twenty-three individuals from 1

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) is a rare, genetic, slowly progressive disorder that affects nerve conduction, particularly in the limbs and, therefore, the muscles. Phenotypes vary, but the impact on quality of life is always present. CMT1A is the most prevalent type. There is no pharmacological cure, so physiotherapy is essential, but nutritional and exercise aspects are rarely considered. In this case report, we demonstrate how, even in this condition, effective results can be achieved with strength training if properly supervised, coordinated with physiotherapy, and combined with an appropriate

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is among the most prevalent and clinically significant toxicities from systemic cancer treatments, with taxanes being a leading cause. It is characterised by a length-dependent, predominantly sensory axonal neuropathy that can stabilise or improve after treatment discontinuation. However, the clinical course can be profoundly altered by underlying peripheral nerve pathology. We report the case of a 68-year-old woman with luminal B, HER2-negative breast cancer who developed severe peripheral neuropathy during adjuvant chemotherapy with doxorubic
