Management of Zygomaticomaxillary Complex Fractures in Children.

OBJECTIVE: Zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures in children can lead to severe aesthetic and functional complications, including pronounced facial asymmetry, visual impairment, associated ophthalmic injuries. The management of ZMC fractures in pediatric patients presents unique challenges. This article verified the feasibility of using absorbable plate through intraoral approach in the reduction and fixation of ZMC fractures in children. METHODS: The operation was performed through the intraoral maxillary sulcus incisions. The 3D printed prototype and repaired models were used intraope

Survival of glass fiber post retained endodontically treated teeth preliminary report.

BACKGROUND: The use of fiber reinforced composite post in restoration of endodontically treated teeth have been found to prevent irreparable root fracture and the fact that the post is bonded to the root giving a monobloc restoration, also strengthens the tooth. This preliminary study aimed to evaluate the survival of endodontically treated teeth with compromised coronal tooth structure restored with glass-fiber posts after 6 months. METHODOLOGY: Twenty endodontically treated teeth with less than 50% coronal tooth structure, were assessed and restored with glass fiber reinforced post cemented

Delayed Treatment of Traumatized Primary Teeth with Distinct Pulp Response: Follow-Up until Permanent Successors Eruption.

Complicated crown fracture and crown-root fracture with pulp involvement expose dental pulp to the oral environment. The pulp outcome is often unpredictable because the patient and injury which are related to variables can influence the treatment of choice and the prognosis of the case. This report presents the case of a 4-year-old boy with complicated crown fracture with pulp polyp in the primary right maxillary central incisor (51) and crown-root fracture with pulp involvement in the primary left maxillary central incisor (61), which was treated only 3 months after the tooth injuries. The tr

Re-reattachment of a fractured maxillary central incisor: a case study.

There has been a rise in incidence of dental trauma and crown fractures as reported in the literature. Children and teenagers are the most affected age groups, and the maxillary central incisors are the teeth most often affected. This article discusses reattachment techniques for the restoration of fractured teeth when the tooth fragment is recovered after a traumatic dental injury. This particular case study reports re-reattachment of a previously fractured and reattached tooth fragment.

Intraoperative femur fracture is associated with stem and instrument design in primary total hip arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative proximal femoral fracture is a risk in total hip arthroplasty (THA) with cementless stems with reported rates of 1.5-27.8%. Certain designs or designs associated with certain types of instrumentation may have higher rates. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We compared the incidence of proximal femoral fracture with two stem and instrument design systems. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 425 patients (457 hips) undergoing primary THAs using a supine, muscle-sparing approach between February 2007 and April 2009. In 439 cases, a monoblock, broach-only, tapered wedge design stem

Restoration fractures, cusp fractures and root fragments in a diverse sample of adults: 24-month incidence.

BACKGROUND: There are few reports in the literature regarding estimates of the occurrence of tooth fractures. Most studies have assessed tooth fractures in people seeking dental care, which may underestimate the incidence of the problem. METHODS: This study sought to estimate the incidence and prevalence of cusp and restoration fractures, as well as root fragments in participants in the Florida Dental Care Study, a diverse representative sample of community-dwelling residents of four north Florida counties made up of people who seek dental care regularly and those who do not. Participants rec

Esthetic enhancement of a traumatized anterior tooth with a combination of forced eruption and tooth alignment: a case report.

Exposing sound structure of a subgingivally fractured tooth using orthodontic extrusion is considered to be a conservative way to re-establish biologic width without sacrificing esthetics or jeopardizing periodontal support of neighboring teeth. When a misaligned tooth is traumatically involved, a more comprehensive approach combining tooth extrusion and re-alignment may be necessary for a successful restorative outcome. This case report describes a successful esthetic management of a patient with complicated crown-root fracture on the maxillary right central incisor and pre-existing malocclus

Combined orthodontic, surgical, and restorative approach to treat a complicated crown-root fracture in a maxillary central incisor.

This case report shows the treatment of a severe traumatic tooth injury. For the maxillary right central incisor, the trauma was considered a complicated crown-root fracture. The level of the fracture line, the length of the remaining root segment, and the presence and condition of the tooth fragment determined the type of therapy. Traumatized teeth with fractures below the alveolar crest are often considered hopeless. As this report shows, the treatment of a complicated crown-root fracture in the esthetic region can be challenging. Orthodontic extrusion and crown-length surgery were performed

Recent Advances in the Diagnosis of Enamel Cracks: A Narrative Review.

Cracked teeth can pose a diagnostic dilemma for a clinician as they can mimic several other conditions. The constant physiological stress along with any pathological strain like trauma or iatrogenic causes can lead to the development of microcracks in the teeth. Constant exposure to immense stress can cause the progression of these often-undiagnosed tooth cracks to cause tooth fractures. This review aims to outline the etiology of tooth cracks, their classification, and recent advances in the diagnosis of enamel cracks. Diagnosing a cracked tooth can be an arduous task as symptoms differ accor

Mandibular fractures following third molar extraction. A retrospective clinical and radiological study.

Twelve patients with 13 mandibular fractures following third molar extraction were treated in our Department between 1980 and 1995. Clinical and radiographic data relating to these patients were analysed retrospectively to determine complication characteristics. Only one fracture occurred during surgery. The first week after the operation was found to be most critical for fracture occurrence. A "cracking" sound from the jaw while eating frequently indicated that a fracture had occurred, but repeated radiographic examination may be necessary for definitive diagnosis. Most teeth removed belonged

Spectrophotometric Evaluation of Crown Fragment a Year After Reattachment Using Fiber-Reinforced Post: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Crown fracture is the most common type of fracture and frequently affects the anterior teeth. Crown fractures have been treated in several ways depending on the location and kind of fracture. This case emphasizes reattachment of fractured fragments using fiber-reinforced post. Also this case report underlines the related aesthetic concerns of reattaching of the fractured fragment. CASE REPORT: Intraorally, examination revealed a complicated crown-root fracture of the left maxillary central (#21) and lateral incisor (#22). Moreover, the incisal one-third of the right maxillary cent

Influence of digital crown design software on morphology, occlusal characteristics, fracture force and marginal fit.

OBJECTIVES: The study evaluated the influence of digital design software on crown morphology, occlusal characteristics, fracture force, and marginal fit across varying preparation designs for an identical target tooth. METHODS: A resin-based tooth (tooth 36) was digitized, manufactured (n=8), individually prepared and re-digitized. Five design groups were established using conventional software proposals, technician designs, two AI-based software solutions, and natural tooth-based reference designs. All systems employed consistent parameters. Crown designs were digitally assessed using quanti

[A case of injured unerupted permanent tooth in a child].

Children with trauma visit frequently the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The treatment for injured permanent teeth is different from that for injured deciduous teeth. We have experienced a case of a 9-year-old boy with an injured unerupted immature permanent tooth with tooth crown fracture. When the tooth erupted gradually, fractured pieces were removed three times, and indirect pulp capping was performed. Three years after the injury eruption was almost completed and pulp was alive, even though the dental roentgenograph showed obliteration of the crown pulp cavity.

Fragment Reattachment: A 4-Year Case Report of Uncomplicated Dental Fractures.

Two fractured maxillary central incisors were restored via the crown fragment reattachment technique with adhesive systems and composite resin material. A long-term successful outcome was achieved after 4 years of follow-up. The patient presented with fractured maxillary central incisors, and a comprehensive intraoral and radiographic examination revealed that both teeth had extended crown fractures with no pulpal exposure (Class II, Ellis and Davey). The tooth fragments were thoroughly cleaned and inspected before being repositioned. Both fragments were in excellent condition with almost no p

[Treatment of dental accidents and associated alveolar fractures].

Diagnosis of dental accidents is based on patient history, clinical examination and imaging. A completely avulsed tooth should immediately be reimplanted, and a dislodged tooth urgently repositioned to the original position. Avulsed primary teeth will never be reimplanted, and primary teeth of children under three years are not repositioned. Furthermore, fractures of the alveolar process and various soft tissue injuries but not dental fractures require urgent treatment. All dental accident patients should be referred to dental consultation for further examinations and treatment.

Dental pathology of the California sea lion (Zalophus californianus).

Skulls from 1,085 California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) were examined macroscopically according to defined criteria. The museum specimens, 61.8% male and 37.3% female, were acquired from strandings and varied in age from juvenile to adult. The majority of teeth were available for examination (95.7%); 3.8% of teeth were artefactually absent, 0.4% deemed absent due to acquired tooth loss and 0.1% were congenitally absent. Acquired tooth loss was associated significantly with sex (P = 0.004) with males having more tooth loss than females and total ante-mortem tooth loss was associated sig
