Paresthesia of the mental nerve stem from periapical infection of mandibular canine tooth: a case report.

Sensory disturbances such as paresthesia, anesthesia, hypoesthesia, and hyperesthesia may be present in the oral cavity. Paresthesia is defined as a burning or prickling sensation or partial numbness caused by neural injury. Paresthesia in dentistry can be caused by local or systemic factors. Local factors include traumatic injuries such as mandibular fractures, expanding compressive lesions (benign or malignant neoplasia and cysts), impacted teeth, local infections (osteomyelitis, periapical, and peri-implant infections), iatrogenic lesions after tooth extractions, anesthetic injection, endod

Functional tooth regenerative therapy: tooth tissue regeneration and whole-tooth replacement.

Oral and general health is compromised by irreversible dental problems, including dental caries, periodontal disease and tooth injury. Regenerative therapy for tooth tissue repair and whole-tooth replacement is currently considered a novel therapeutic concept with the potential for the full recovery of tooth function. Several types of stem cells and cell-activating cytokines have been identified in oral tissues. These cells are thought to be candidate cell sources for tooth tissue regenerative therapies because they have the ability to differentiate into tooth tissues in vitro and in vivo. Who

Accidental Molar Ingestion During Postoperative Recovery After Thoracic Surgery: A Case Report.

Accidental ingestion of a permanent tooth in an adult during high-risk surgery is rare but can lead to serious complications, including gastrointestinal obstruction, perforation, and mediastinitis. A 65-year-old woman with a history of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and granulosa cell tumor underwent wedge resection and excisional biopsy via video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). Preoperative evaluation revealed multiple missing, cracked, and discolored teeth, including a loose mandibular third molar. Despite previous preoperative counseling, the patient was unable to obtain dental treat

Bilirubin reversibly affects cell death and odontogenic capacity in stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperbilirubinemia in patients with biliary atresia causes deciduous tooth injuries such as green pigmentation and dentin hypoplasia. In patients with biliary atresia who received liver transplantation, tooth structure appears to be recovered radiographically. Nevertheless, little is known about cellular mechanisms underlying bilirubin-induced damage and suppression of deciduous tooth formation. In this study, we examined the effects of bilirubin in stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS: SHED were cultured under exposure to excess o

Prognosis and complications of mature teeth after lateral luxation: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Dental trauma injuries are frequent in children and adolescents and can result in a sequela of future complications. Lateral luxation injuries are diagnosed when a tooth becomes displaced in a position other than axial and is often associated with alveolar bone fracture. Although the tooth is not immediately lost, pulp canal obliteration or pulpal necrosis can occur. The objective of this systematic review was to gather existing data on lateral luxation injuries to mature teeth to evaluate their overall prognosis and reported complications. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The authors c

Endodontic treatment of mandibular molars with concrescence.

Endodontic treatment of a permanent mandibular first molar and a second molar presumably joined by cementum is presented. This case illustrates the difficulty in interpreting the vitality testing in such a situation. It also suggests possible irreversible pulp injury of a vital healthy tooth caused by extension of the inflammatory periapical pathosis of the adjacent tooth.

Management of traumatically intruded young permanent tooth with 40-month follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Intrusive luxation injuries often result in severe damage to the tooth, periodontal ligament and pulpal tissue. Furthermore, treatment outcome is often unpredictable because of the large number of injury related variables which influence choice of treatment and prognosis. This report presents the case of a 9-year-old boy with a 6 mm intruded permanent maxillary central incisor with an open apex. METHODS: The treatment option chosen was to wait and watch for 'spontaneous re-eruption'. At the end of two weeks, the tooth showed signs of pulp necrosis and external root resorption. A p

Regenerative Endodontics Maintained Arrest of External Inflammatory Root Resorption After Secondary Concussion Injury: A Case Report.

This report highlights the unique occurrence of secondary trauma to a tooth previously treated with regenerative endodontic therapy (RET) and the successful outcome following this secondary injury. A 10-year-old girl sustained initial trauma to her maxillary central incisors. Tooth 11 sustained a complicated crown fracture and was treated with pulpotomy, which promoted complete root closure. Tooth 21 initially presented with an uncomplicated crown fracture; however, subsequent radiographic examinations revealed external inflammatory root resorption (EIRR) and periapical periodontitis. RET was

Phantom tooth pain: a new look at an old dilemma.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this paper is to review the current knowledge of phantom tooth pain, a neuropathic facial pain disorder, thought to result from peripheral nerve injury. Phantom tooth pain is a deafferentation pain disorder of persistent toothache in teeth that have been denervated (usually by root canal treatment) or pain in the area formerly occupied by teeth prior to their extraction. The pain usually extends to the facial structures adjacent to tissues that have undergone deafferentation. The clinical characteristics, differential diagnosis, epidemiology, and treatment of phantom too

Management of 3 Avulsed Permanent Teeth: Case Report of a 3-Year Follow-up.

Dental avulsion is one of the most serious dental injuries. When the tooth is knocked out, the blood supply to the pulp is interrupted and the periodontal ligament cells are exposed to injuries caused by the external environment. In recent years, research findings have shown the possibility of complete healing under favorable conditions: replanting the tooth according to the criteria required by the guideline such as the extra oral time which should be very short, the time of pulp removal after replantation, and the appropriate storage medium. This set of criteria may lead to a slower progress
