OBJECTIVE: Mast cells are tissue-dwelling granule-containing immune cells that play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of inflammation and other processes. The three most common orodental disorders in cats are periodontitis, feline resorptive lesions (FRL), and chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS). The presence and density of mast cells in the gingiva has been established in healthy cats but not in cats affected by FRL, FCGS or periodontitis. The aim of the present study was to document and quantify the presence of mast cells in the gingiva adjacent to teeth affected by FRL, FCGS or chronic period

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that there is no difference in the effect of different continuous moderate to very heavy forces on root resorption or amount of tooth movement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the study, 10, 25, 50 and 100 g mesial force were applied to the maxillary first molars of rat using nickel titanium closed-coil springs for 3 days, 14 days, and 28 days. The molars were extracted and the surface areas of the root resorption craters were measured using scanning electron microscope. The depths of the root resorption craters were measured using a three-dimensional laser scannin

The aim of this clinical and confocal laser scanning microscopic study was to compare the effects of two frequently used archwires on tooth movement and root resorption. A total of 84 premolars in 27 individuals (10 boys, 17 girls, with a mean age of 12.5 years) was moved buccally with an experimental fixed orthodontic appliance. In a split mouth experimental design the premolar on one side was activated with a stainless steel wire with a buccal offset of 1 mm, which was reactivated every four weeks and the contralateral premolar was moved with a superelastic wire with a force plateau of 0.8-1

This review described the effects of several drugs on the formation and the resorption mechanism of tooth and bone. The enamel formed during high fluoride exposure showed marked hypocalcification, and the organic substances appeared on the incisors in these regions. Such changes following fluoride administration appear to indicate an inhibition of the mineral deposition and/or an inhibition of organic matrix withdrawal. The successive bisphosphonate (HEBP) injections reduced both the progress of the mineral deposition and the formation of the enamel matrix. Colchicine showed a remarkable inhib

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to compare external root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement between patients who were subjected to photobiomodulation and those who were not.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was designed as a split-mouth, single-blind randomized controlled trial conducted on twenty-two orthodontic patients requiring extraction of maxillary first premolars (age group 13-30years). A buccal force was applied to all the premolars using a 0.019″×0.025″ beta-titanium cantilever spring for 28days. The test group premolars were irradiated by indium-gallium-arsenide

Resorption of the distal root of primary second molars is a common consequence of ectopically erupting permanent first molars. Here, we report 2 unusual cases of primary molar root resorption caused by reversible (self-correcting) ectopic eruption of premolar and canine teeth. In both cases, severe pathological resorption of the mesial roots of primary molars was detected on routine dental radiographs, and the affected molars remained asymptomatic until exfoliation. The purpose of this paper was, using 2 case studies, to highlight the possibility of primary root resorption as a sequel of self-

BACKGROUND: Pathological displacement of teeth caused by periodontitis-related bone loss in patients with diabetes is often corrected with orthodontic treatments. However, recovery from orthodontic therapy is often delayed for unclear reasons. This study explored effects of streptozotocin-induced diabetes in rats on protein expression involved in remodeling of the periodontal ligament (PDL) and alveolar bone during orthodontic tooth movement.
METHODS: Forty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two experimental groups: "normal" and "diabetes" (n = 24 each). Diabetes was induced

Advanced internal resorption affecting the crown of teeth may result in the appearance of a 'pink tooth', which, when located in the root canal, can perforate the external root surface. Therapeutically, this condition represents a clinical challenge and normally requires a combined endodontic and surgical focus. Presented herein are cases of double 'pink tooth' which appeared at different times after orthodontic treatment. In the most severe case, upon radiographic examination and computed tomography, the maxillary right central incisor presented an internal resorption, extending from the pulp

BACKGROUND: Root resorption (RR) is a critical concern in orthodontics. It is influenced by treatment duration and techniques. Minimally invasive surgically accelerated orthodontics (MISAO) aims to reduce treatment time but may impact RR, necessitating a systematic evaluation of its effects.
OBJECTIVE: This review aims to evaluate the impact of MISAO techniques on RR across different types of orthodontic movements compared to conventional techniques.
SEARCH METHODS: A systematic search of nine databases and a manual screening of journals were conducted following PRISMA guidelines, with no re

To date, no study has compared the effects of CAD/CAM versus flexible multistrand wire (FMS) retainers in the presence/absence of root resorption and/or alveolar crestal bone resorption on the anterior mandibular teeth's stresses/displacements. Therefore, this simulation was conducted. Developed were 8 mandible models with six anterior teeth. Models 1 to 4 had FMS retainers; models 5 to 8 had nickel-titanium CAD/CAM retainers. Models #1 and 5: Both bone and roots were intact; #2 and 6: Only alveolar crests had resorption (2 mm); Models #3 and 7: Only roots had resorption (2 mm); Models #4 and

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to provide a comprehensive review of the current knowledge of the multiple roles of Runt-related transcription factor-2 (RUNX2) in regulating tooth eruption, focusing on the molecular mechanisms regarding tooth eruption mediated by RUNX2.
DESIGN: Relevant literatures in PubMed, Medline, and Scopus database were searched, and a narrative review was performed. The multiple roles of RUNX2 in regulating tooth eruption was reviewed and discussed.
RESULTS: Aberrant RUNX2 expression leads to disturbed or failed tooth eruption. Tooth eruption involves both the process of bone

This is the first study to our knowledge to report a novel mutation in the interferon regulatory factor 8 gene (IRF8G388S ) associated with multiple idiopathic tooth root resorption, a form of periodontal disease. The IRF8G388S variant in the highly conserved C-terminal motif is predicted to alter the protein structure, likely impairing IRF8 function. Functional assays demonstrated that the IRF8G388S mutant promoted osteoclastogenesis and failed to inhibit NFATc1-dependent transcriptional activation when compared with IRF8WT control. Further, similar to subjects with heterozygous IRF8G388S mut

This is a cross-sectional study that aimed to estimate maxillary sinus floor (MSF) pneumatization in single missing tooth of posterior maxilla, by using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). CBCT images were analyzed bilaterally and divided into 2 groups: edentulous site (EdS) - edentulous single region of upper second premolar, first or second molars; Tooth site (TS) - contralateral region homologous to the EdS region, with tooth present. Variables evaluated were: sinus height (SH), estimated sinus pneumatization (eSP: ∆ EdS - TS), healed ridge height (HR) and presence of localized sinus pneu

The aim of the present study was to assess the efficacy of a ready-to-use injectable bone substitute on the prevention of alveolar ridge resorption after tooth extraction. Maxillary and mandibular premolars were extracted from 3 Beagle dogs with preservation of alveolar bone. Thereafter, distal sockets were filled with an injectable bone substitute (IBS), obtained by combining a polymer solution and granules of a biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramic. As a control, the mesial sockets were left unfilled. After a 3 months healing period, specimens were removed and prepared for histomorphometr

Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9, or gelatinase B) is an extracellular proteinase that is highly expressed in osteoclasts and has been postulated to play an important role in their resorptive activity. Although MMP-9 has been reported to play a role in bone resorption, the association of this enzyme during deciduous tooth resorption has not yet been clarified. The purpose of the present study was to increase our understanding of the role of MMP-9 during deciduous tooth resorption. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and northern blot analysis of total RNAs extracted from

BACKGROUND: Many adult orthodontic patients suffer from chronic periodontitis with recurrent episodes of active periodontal inflammation. As their number is steadily increasing, orthodontists are more and more frequently challenged by respective treatment considerations. However, little is currently known regarding interactive effects on undesired dental root resorption (DRR), tooth movement velocity, periodontal bone loss and the underlying cellular and tissue reactions.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 63 male Fischer344 rats were used in three consecutive experiments employing 21 animals e

The rat labial incisor alveolar bone facing the enamel and bearing the occlusal force was examined by electron microscopy after being compared with the lingual alveolar bone by histological and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observations. On the labial side, shallow resorptive lacunae were recognized all over the bone surface; these were mainly covered by osteoclasts and some mononuclear cells. The cement line was absent from the bone matrix. On the lingual side, residues of Sharpey's fibers, the bone formation surface and deep resorptive lacunae were observed by SEM. Histologically, bone
