Quality and guideline adherence of child-oriented toothbrushing videos on YouTube: a comparative study of Turkish and English content.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries remains a major global public health concern. As parents and children increasingly rely on digital platforms for health information, the quality and reliability of online educational resources become critical. Despite the abundance of general oral health content, studies specifically evaluating child-oriented toothbrushing instructions remain scarce. To address this gap, the present study evaluated and compared the quality, reliability, and guideline adherence of child-oriented toothbrushing videos in Turkish and English, highlighting potential disparities be

Early twice-daily toothbrushing and adolescent dental caries: a causal inference analysis using the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is a highly prevalent chronic childhood condition, yet longitudinal evidence linking early oral hygiene behaviours to long-term outcomes remains limited. This study estimated whether twice-daily toothbrushing at age 2-3 years was associated with lower incident dental caries through adolescence, under a target trial emulation framework. METHODS: Data were from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC) B-cohort (N = 5,107). Children with caries at or before Wave 2 (age 2-3) were excluded, yielding an incident sample of 2,970. Associations were estimated usin

Exploring brushing and questionnaire data from a feasibility randomised control trial of a school-based smart, connected toothbrushing program.

BACKGROUND: Children's oral health continues to be a key issue, with dental caries remaining one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases. One of the main ways to prevent dental caries is to carry out adequate toothbrushing with fluoridated toothpaste. Connected or 'smart' toothbrushes can provide real-time feedback on brushing behaviour to individuals or be used to provide feedback to groups for example within a school setting. This study aimed to identify the engagement level of school children with a smart, connected toothbrush, explore brushing frequency, timing, coverage, and durat

Are bristle stiffness and bristle end-shape related to adverse effects on soft tissues during toothbrushing? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Toothbrushing might be associated with the development of soft tissue lesions. This systemic review aimed to examine soft tissue lesions caused by different bristle stiffnesses and bristle end-shapes in manual toothbrushes in adult individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Scopus, EMBASE and PubMed databases were searched to find controlled trials that evaluated manual toothbrush bristle stiffness and/or end-shape in regard to soft tissue safety. The grey literature was also included in the search strategy. Two reviewers independently performed the screening, final selection and data ex

Influence of Copper Tongue Scraper and Toothbrush on Morning Halitosis in Dentistry Students: A Brief Clinical Study.

The objective was to evaluate the influence of two tongue cleaning methods (copper tongue scraper and toothbrush) on morning halitosis in dental students. Thirteen dental students were included. After training, the first participant took the halimeter home and used it for 6 days. On the first three days, halitosis was measured immediately after the participant woke up in the morning. The night before each of these first three days, before going to sleep, the participant cleaned their mouth with dental floss and a soft-bristled toothbrush. The individual's same soft-bristled toothbrush was also

Delayed endoscopic retrieval of a retained toothbrush: a case report of a rare 3-year asymptomatic retention.

Foreign body ingestion is a common clinical issue, but swallowing a full-sized toothbrush is exceptionally rare. We report a case of a 32-year-old Sudanese male with a three-year history of an accidentally ingested toothbrush. The patient presented with mild epigastric pain and intermittent dysphagia but no acute complications. Imaging, including X-ray and computed tomography, failed to identify the foreign body. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed a complete toothbrush lodged in the stomach, with its head extending into the duodenum. The object was successfully removed intact using a polypect

Pseudomonas Reinfection in a Patient With Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia: How a Toothbrush Could Make You Sick.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by impaired mucociliary clearance, leading to recurrent respiratory tract infections, chronic rhinosinusitis, and progressive bronchiectasis. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common pathogen associated with poorer clinical outcomes in patients with PCD. While environmental sources of P. aeruginosa are well-documented in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, to our knowledge, this is the first reported case implicating toothbrush colonization as a likely source of recurrent P. aeruginosa infections in a patient with PCD.

Effects of mechanical stimulation by a powered toothbrush on the healing of periodontal tissue in a rat model of periodontal disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Elimination of pathogens is the main aim of periodontal treatment; however, modulation of the host immune response should also be considered. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of mechanical stimulation on periodontal healing in rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Before starting the experiment, lipopolysaccharide and proteases were applied once a day, for 4 wk, to both maxillary first molars of 30 rats to induce periodontal disease, and the application was stopped at the end of the 4-wk period. The experiment started immediately following this pretreatment. In the exp

Comparison of the Effectiveness of Three Different Types of Toothbrushes Among 8-12-year-old Children.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Dental caries and periodontal diseases are considered the most common oral diseases that could be controlled by daily toothbrushing using a toothbrush. However, manual regular toothbrushing techniques may be performed incorrectly due to the inadequately developed motor skills of children. The new U-shaped toothbrush does not require as much control, and it is much easier to handle. Our objectives are to compare the effectiveness of plaque removal among three toothbrushes: Manual U-shaped toothbrush (U), battery-powered regular toothbrush (E), manual regular toothbrush (R
