Synchronal dual brain stimulation over the somatosensory cortex modulated social touch-induced analgesia depending on empathy.

Social touch, when provided as emotional support, can induce pain relief. Alpha inter-brain synchrony in the somatosensory cortex may be a neural factor contributing to the pain relief induced by social touch. This study investigated whether artificial manipulation of inter-brain communication in the pain-receiver and touch-giver could modulate touch-induced analgesia using transcranial alternating current stimulation. Sixteen same-sex pairs of participants were assigned the roles of pain-receiver and touch-giver during alpha-band transcranial alternating current stimulation applied to the som

Submillimeter Lateral Displacement Enables Friction Sensing and Awareness of Surface Slipperiness.

Human tactile perception and motor control rely on the frictional estimates that stem from the deformation of the skin and slip events. However, it is not clear how exactly these mechanical events relate to the perception of friction. This study aims to quantify how minor lateral displacement and speed enables subjects to feel frictional differences. In a 2-alternative forced-choice protocol, an ultrasonic friction-reduction device was brought in contact perpendicular to the skin surface of an immobilized index finger; after reaching 1N normal force, the plate was moved laterally. A combinatio

Whisker touch sensing guides locomotion in small, quadrupedal mammals.

All small mammals have prominent facial whiskers that they employ as tactile sensors to guide navigation and foraging in complex habitats. Nocturnal, arboreal mammals tend to have the longest and most densely packed whiskers, and semi-aquatic mammals have the most sensitive. Here we present evidence to indicate that many small mammals use their whiskers to tactually guide safe foot positioning. Specifically, in 11, small, non-flying mammal species, we demonstrate that forepaw placement always falls within the ground contact zone of the whisker field and that forepaw width is always smaller tha

Distorted body representations in anorexia nervosa.

In this paper, I discuss empirical evidence regarding anorexic patients' distorted body representations. I fit this evidence into a broader framework for understanding how the spatial content of the body is tracked and represented. This framework is motivated by O'Shaughnessy's (1980) long-term body image hypothesis. This hypothesis posits a representation that tracks changes in the spatial content of the body and supplies this content to other body representations. I argue that a similar kind of body representation might exist and, in the case of anorexia, be distorted. Finally, I suggest tha

Quantitative measurement of cutaneous perception in diabetic neuropathy.

To determine the diagnostic value of various cutaneous sensory modalities in diabetic neuropathy, we studied cutaneous perception at the dominant hallux of 113 subjects (32 normal healthy controls and 81 diabetic subjects). The cutaneous sensory perception tests included warm and cold thermal perception, vibration, touch-pressure sensation, and current perception testing (CPT). The sensitivity of each modality when specificity is held greater than 90% was as follows: warm = 78%, cold = 77%, vibration = 88%, tactile-pressure = 77%, 5-Hz CPT = 52%, 250-Hz CPT = 48%, and 2000-Hz CPT = 56%. The Hedonic Experience Associated with a Gentle Touch Is Preserved in Women with Fibromyalgia.

Background/Objectives: Although manual therapies can be used for pain alleviation in fibromyalgia, there is no clear evidence about the processing of gentle, affective touch in this clinical condition. In fact, persistent painful sensations and psychological factors may impact the hedonic experience of touch. Methods: This observational cross-sectional study compared the subjective experience of affective touch between 14 women with fibromyalgia (age range: 35-70; range of years of education: 5-13) and 14 pain-free women (age range: 18-30; range of years of education: 13-19). The participants

Anisotropic distortion in the perceived orientation of stimuli on the arm.

Mechanoreceptors on the skin are heterogeneously distributed, and the sampling of neural signals in the brain can vary depending on the part of the body. Therefore, it can be challenging for the brain to consistently represent stimuli applied to different body sites. Here, we report an example of a regional perceptual distortion of the tactile space. We used a piezoelectric braille display to examine shape perception on the volar surface of the arm and to compare it to that on the palm. We found that the orientation of perceived stimuli on the arm was distorted in certain areas. In particular,

Exploring the Relationship Between Astringency and Lingual Tactile Sensitivity.

When lingual tactile sensitivity has received less attention than taste, it plays a critical role in food textural preferences and eating behavior. The anterior tongue, rich in specialized mechanoreceptors, is particularly sensitive to tactile stimuli. This study investigated inter-individual variability in lingual tactile sensitivity and its potential relationship with astringency sensitivity. To this end, three distinct aspects of lingual tactile sensitivity as well as tongue strength were assessed in 39 subjects (26 F, mean age = 35 ± 5 years). The three tactile dimensions included: (i) lig

Shape and Tactile Perceptions of Soft Fingers via Distributed Curvature Sensing for Intelligent Grippers.

Human fingers are one of the most remarkable organs for handling complex tasks or manipulating unknown objects, not only due to its dexterous and powerful movement capabilities but also its rich kinematic sense at joints and tactile sensing at skins. Shape and tactile sensing are crucial for soft pneumatic fingers to achieve embodied intelligence. Reliable tactile sensing of soft pneumatic-driven robots is particularly challenging due to its large deformation and adaptability. Here, we propose a distributed local curvature sensing-based solution for simultaneous shape and tactile perceptions i

Temporal modulation of tactile perception during balance control.

Somatosensory feedback, like touch, is essential for body control and movement. Yet tactile sensations from a body part that is about to move or is moving are often suppressed. Most studies on tactile suppression focus on upper-limb movements, where suppression is typically reduced when tactile signals become important to the task. However, how tactile sensitivity changes at other body parts involved in more complex, whole-body actions is widely unexplored. This study examines the temporal tuning of tactile processing on the lower limb during balance control while varying feedback processing d

Conveying tactile object characteristics through customized intracortical microstimulation of the human somatosensory cortex.

Microstimulation of the somatosensory cortex can evoke tactile percepts in people with spinal cord injury, providing a means to restore touch. While location and intensity can be reliably conveyed, two issues that prevent creating more complex naturalistic sensations are a lack of methods to effectively scan the large stimulus parameter space and difficulties with assessing percept quality. Here, we address both challenges with an experimental paradigm that enables three male individuals with tetraplegia to control their stimulation parameters in a blinded fashion to create sensations for diff

Augmenting locomotor perception by remapping tactile foot sensation to the back.

BACKGROUND: Sensory reafferents are crucial to correct our posture and movements, both reflexively and in a cognitively driven manner. They are also integral to developing and maintaining a sense of agency for our actions. In cases of compromised reafferents, such as for persons with amputated or congenitally missing limbs, or diseases of the peripheral and central nervous systems, augmented sensory feedback therefore has the potential for a strong, neurorehabilitative impact. We here developed an untethered vibrotactile garment that provides walking-related sensory feedback remapped non-invas

Dynamic touch induces autonomic changes in preterm infants as measured by changes in heart rate variability.

Preterm birth significantly increases the risk of developing various long-term health problems and developmental disabilities. While touch is a crucial component of many perinatal care strategies, the neurobiological underpinnings are rarely considered. C-tactile fibers (CTs) are unmyelinated nerve fibers that are activated by low-force, dynamic touch. Touch directed specifically at CTs activates the posterior insular cortex, consistent with an interoceptive function, and has been shown to reduce heart rate and increase oxygen saturation. The current research compared the effect of five minute

Tactile Sensitivity of Women with Turner Syndrome.

Physical manifestations of Turner syndrome include short stature, a webbed neck, and a shield chest with widely spaced nipples. An aspect of the disease which has not been sufficiently explored so far is the tactile sensitivity of Turner syndrome patients. Thus, the aim of the study was to assess the threshold of tactile sensitivity on hands and feet of women suffering from Turner syndrome. Information on the participants of the study was collected on the basis of questionnaires, as well as anthropometric measurements using a skinfold caliper. Semmes-Weinstein Aesthesiometer was used to find t

Tarsal tunnel release restores sensations in sole for diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathy (DSPN) is the commonest form of neuropathy. Loss of sensations in sole leads to diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) and its complications. Surgical decompression has been used in the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy, however; its effectiveness has been questioned.Purpose of this study was to evaluate the sensory recovery in sole after tarsal tunnel decompression (TTD) in patients having DSPN. METHODS: Thirteen patients (Age28-70 years, average 35.57 years; 7 Males, 6 Females; 20 feet) with DSPN and positive Tinel's sign over the tarsal tunnel

An artist's "motoric perception" and its influence upon the formal aspect of her art.

A young sculptor came to analysis because of depression and work block. Her depression began after she left her family to come to America. She had a childhood depression when she was three when her mother left her for several months. Her childhood depression was "treated" by her older brothers by throwing her from brother to brother until her cries turned to shrieks and finally exhausted sleep. This experience altered her ability to mourn and seemed a model for her use of physical actions at times of stress. The patient maintained that she had no visual memory of objects that she used in her a

Human Touch Receptors Are Sensitive to Spatial Details on the Scale of Single Fingerprint Ridges.

Fast-adapting type 1 (FA-1) and slowly-adapting type 1 (SA-1) first-order tactile neurons provide detailed spatiotemporal tactile information when we touch objects with fingertips. The distal axon of these neuron types branches in the skin and innervates many receptor organs associated with fingerprint ridges (Meissner corpuscles and Merkel cell neurite complexes, respectively), resulting in heterogeneous receptive fields whose sensitivity topography includes many highly sensitive zones or "subfields." In experiments on humans of both sexes, using raised dots that tangentially scanned the rece

Hearing shapes our perception of time: temporal discrimination of tactile stimuli in deaf people.

Confronted with the loss of one type of sensory input, we compensate using information conveyed by other senses. However, losing one type of sensory information at specific developmental times may lead to deficits across all sensory modalities. We addressed the effect of auditory deprivation on the development of tactile abilities, taking into account changes occurring at the behavioral and cortical level. Congenitally deaf and hearing individuals performed two tactile tasks, the first requiring the discrimination of the temporal duration of touches and the second requiring the discrimination

Haptic Serial Dependence in Roughness Perception and Pleasantness.

Our perception does not consist of isolated events but unfold and adapt over time, forming a continuous stream of experience. How we perceive an object is influenced not only by its intrinsic characteristics but also by our recent interactions, leading to sequential effects (i.e., serial dependence). In this study, we investigated whether such effects occur in haptic material perception, specifically in pleasantness and roughness. We also examined whether serial dependence is grounded in the physical object properties or the task at hand (i.e., perceptual attribute). To this end, we used seven

Atypical Tactile Perception in Early Childhood Autism.

We assessed different aspects of tactile perception in young children (3-6 years) with autism. Autistic and neurotypical children completed vibrotactile tasks assessing reaction time, amplitude discrimination (sequential and simultaneous) and temporal discrimination (temporal order judgment and duration discrimination). Autistic children had elevated and more variable reaction times, suggesting slower perceptual-motor processing speed and/or greater distractibility. Children with autism also showed higher amplitude discrimination and temporal order judgement thresholds compared to neurotypical
