Toxocara canis: interaction of human blood eosinophils with the infective larvae.

This study was carried out to investigate the nature of the immunological responses which took place in a child who had recently recovered from toxocariasis. She had developed a marked eosinophilia and had high titers of toxocara antibodies. Experiments were performed to examine whether Toxocara canis infective larvae could be killed in the presence of her serum and human eosinophils. Eosinophils with human complement, or this patient's serum, adhered to the surface of the larvae within 10 min. By 40 min, using both light and electron microscopy, it was shown that the cells had flattened again

The progression of behavioral and pathological effects of the parasite Toxocara canis in the mouse.

Toxocara canis, the parasitic roundworm of the dog may infect aberrant hosts including mice and humans. The present study examined the behavioral and pathological changes at each of three postintubation periods (Period 1: 8-10 days, 2: 49-51 days, and 3: 84-86 days postintubation, respectively) in independent groups of mice intubated with 1000 eggs of T. canis. Eight-ten days after intubation Toxocara infected animals typically showed depressed levels of activity relative to saline-intubated controls. The scope and severity of behavioral changes were attenuated when different mice were tested

The prevalence of Toxocara species ova in backyards and gardens of Baltimore, Maryland.

Toxocara species ova were found in 16 of 146 (11 per cent) soil samples collected from backyards and gardens of private residences within Baltimore City. The recovery rate of parasite ova was similar for households regardless of their grouping by pet ownership characteristics or the presence of visible animal feces. The findings demonstrate the common occurrence of these eggs in locations likely to be important in the transmission of visceral larva migrans.

[Eosinophilic infiltrate with reference to Toxocara canis. Apropos of a case in an adult].

Larva migrans syndromes are rare affections that occur mainly in young children. The usual parasite involved is Toxocara canis, its presence in humans leading to encystment of the larvae and an eosinophilic granulomatous reaction. A case of an adult with this affection is reported, and clinical aspects and diagnostic and therapeutic problems discussed.

No evidence of Alzheimer's disease pathology in mice infected with Toxocara canis.

The potential link between the infections and the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has led to speculations about the role of various pathogens in triggering amyloid-β (Aβ) overproduction, possibly leading to AD onset. The globally distributed dog roundworm Toxocara canis was suggested to be a suitable candidate due to neurotropism of the larvae and infection chronicity. This study investigated whether chronic T. canis infection induces AD-like pathology in mice and whether Aβ is toxic to T. canis. BALB/c and APP/PS1 transgenic mice, which overproduce Aβ, were infected with T. canis L3 l

Investigation of the presence of Toxocara spp in beach sand: the case of Kuşadası.

Contact with contaminated soil and sand with infective eggs of Toxocara spp. is one of the causes of toxocariasis in humans. This study aimed to determine the presence of Toxocara spp. eggs in beach sand with those people frequently in contact in the summer months. The study area is approximately 27-km-long coastline located within the borders of Kuşadası district of Aydın province. In this study, which was carried out between 2021 and 2023, the sedimentation/flotation method was used and samples were examined microscopically. In 2021 and 2022, no eggs and/or larvae were found in the sand samp

Anthelmintic efficacy of nitazoxanide in dogs naturally infected with Toxocara canis.

Toxocara canis (T. canis) is a gastrointestinal nematode in dogs, and its larvae also infect humans, causing severe larval migratory disease. Anthelmintic drugs have become the primary means to combat T. canis. In this study, the efficacy of nitazoxanide (NTZ) was tested against all the internal stages of T. canis, including L3 larval stage in vitro experiments and gastrointestinal worm in vivo experiments. In the in vitro experiment, after treatment with NTZ at 7.81 and 62.5 μg/mL for 12 h, the larval mortality efficacy reached 90.0 and 100.0%, respectively. In the in vivo experiments, 100 mg

Toxocara tanuki larval distribution in mice and the infectivity of tissue larvae.

Toxocara tanuki is a common large roundworm in raccoon dogs. Experimental infection studies of T. tanuki in mice were conducted to clarify the distribution and infectivity of larvae in tissue. Groups of BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice (n = 5 mice/group) were each inoculated with 1000 embryonated T. tanuki eggs and necropsied at 7, 31, 91, and 182 days post inoculation (dpi). The number of larvae in the central nervous system, heart, lungs, kidneys, spleen, gastrointestinal tract, liver, and carcass was examined. Larvae obtained from the aforementioned mice on different days of the necropsy were orally

Frequency of Toxocara canis antibodies in Mexican paediatric patients with epilepsy.

The relationship between epilepsy and the presence of visceral larva migrans caused by Toxocara canis in Mexican children remains uncertain; however, this relationship needs to be elucidated because these parasite larvae can invade the human central nervous system. Accordingly, this study aimed to determine the frequency and specificity of anti-T. canis antibodies in the sera of children with epilepsy to determine the relationship between this parasite and epilepsy. The sera samples of 214 children were examined: 111 children diagnosed with epilepsy and 103 clinically healthy children without

Cross-reactivity induced by Anisakis simplex and Toxocara canis in mice.

The aim of this study was to verify whether cross-reactivity appeared between Toxocara canis and Anisakis simplex in an experimental rodent model. No cross-reactions were detected using sera from mice infected with T. canis eggs. When responses obtained against T. canis ES antigen using sera from BALB/c and C57BL/10 mice infected with T. canis eggs were compared with those obtained by testing sera from mice infected with one A. simplex L3, an increase in cross-reactions was observed using the C57BL/10 strain.

[Relationships between the prevalence of Toxocara eggs in dogs' faeces and soil].

Toxocariasis is a cosmopolitan infection of dogs and cats. Humans (mainly children) become infected by accidentally ingesting embryonated eggs from the environment. The studies were conducted on the role of dogs in the epidemiology of human toxocariasis. A total of 112 soil samples and 110 fecal samples were collected from the same public places in Poznań, including backyards in the centre of the city, playgrounds and public squares grounds. Of these soil samples, 6.3 % were positive for Toxocara spp., 1.8 % for Trichuris vulpis. Fecal examination revealed that 0.9 % samples were positive for
