Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a promising brain modulation technique in clinical application. Computational models of brain current flow have been used to provide better insights into determining the stimulation parameters, but there are only a few studies to validate the numerical simulation model. The purpose of this study is to validate the simulation model of tDCS. A one-/three-layered spherical phantom model was constructed to mimic the human head. The tDCS-induced voltages were measured at different depth in the spherical phantom model with stereotactic-EEG (s-EEG) el

OBJECTIVE: Neuromodulation of regions involved in food processing is increasingly used in studies on eating behaviors, but results are controversial. We assessed the effects of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS) on food and body implicit preferences in patients with eating disorders (EDs).
METHOD: Thirty-six ED patients and 36 healthy females completed three sessions with a-tDCS applied to the medial-prefrontal cortex (mPFC), the right extrastriate body area (rEBA) or in sham mode. Each participant then completed three Implicit Association Tests (IATs) on tasty/tasteless

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is an atypical parkinsonian disorder that can present with language production deficits in addition to the characteristic progressive parkinsonian motor symptoms. Although typical parkinsonism treatments such as pharmacotherapy are not effective in PSP, non-invasive brain stimulation techniques such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have shown promise for treating cognitive deficits relating to this disorder. We report the case of KN, who presented with reduced verbal fluency and connected speech production in the context of PSP. KN complete

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive brain stimulation technique able to induce plasticity phenomena. Although tDCS application has been spreading over a variety of neuroscience domains, the mechanisms by which the stimulation acts are largely unknown. We investigated tDCS effects on cortical gamma synchrony, which is a crucial player in cortical function. We performed a randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind study on healthy subjects, combining tDCS and magnetoencephalography. By driving brain activity via 40 Hz auditory stimulation during magnetoencephalography,

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a well-established non-invasive brain stimulation technique that has been widely applied to modulate cortical excitability in human brain. The results of previous tDCS studies on modulating contrast sensitivity, one of the most fundamental visual functions, were mixed.
OBJECTIVE: We aim to systematically investigate the effects of anodal tDCS on contrast sensitivity functions (CSF), evaluate the responsiveness explanation of tDCS effects, and discuss results along with measurement precision.
METHODS: We designed a single-blinded,

The n-back task is an established measure of an individual's working memory. In this task, participants have to continuously update their working memory to react to a stimulus correctly. For the verbal n-back task in particular, the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (lDLPFC) plays a key role in working memory updating and a higher activation of the lDLPFC has been linked to an increase in performance. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been used extensively to investigate its effect on working memory but it remains unclear whether online or offline tDCS produces the largest m

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is currently under investigation as a promising technique for enhancement of athletic performance through modulating cortical excitability. Through consecutive randomization, 12 experienced bodybuilders were randomly assigned to two arms receiving either sham or real tDCS over the primary motor cortex (leg area) and left temporal cortex (T3) for 13 minutes in the first session. After 72 hours, both groups received the inverse stimulation. After the brain stimulation, cerebral hemodynamic response (using frontopolar hemoencephalography) was examine

High-Definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) is a noninvasive brain stimulation technique that can improve the performance of working memory (WM). However, the current researches have focused on the effects of stimulation, while ignored the process of stimulus and the neural mechanism. The targets of this study were to explore the effects of different stimulus categories (active or sham) applied on left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (LDLPFC) on WM training, as well as the physiological changes in the brain after training. Behavioral and electroencephalography (EEG) result

The ability of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to produce lasting polarity-specific modulatory effects continues to drive use both in research and clinical domains. Computational models of tDCS over the years have provided valuable insight on the current flow pattern and magnitude of electric field induced in the cortex. However, induced cortical values are usually not systematically quantified for different brain subcomponents that allow further investigation into the relevant contribution of these distinct regions. This information is of significant interest given different su

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive technique for modulating neural plasticity and is considered to have therapeutic potential in neurological disorders. For the purpose of translational neuroscience research, a suitable animal model can be ideal for providing a stable condition for identifying mechanisms that can help to explore therapeutic strategies. Here, we developed a tDCS protocol for modulating motor excitability in anesthetized rats. To examine the responses of tDCS-elicited plasticity, the motor evoked potential (MEP) and MEP input-output (IO) curve elicit

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a neuromodulatory technique that delivers a low-intensity, direct current to cortical areas with the purpose of modulating underlying brain activity. Recent studies have reported inconsistencies in tDCS outcomes. The underlying assumption of many tDCS studies has been that replication of electrode montage equates to replicating stimulation conditions. It is possible however that anatomical difference between subjects, as well as inherent inaccuracies in montage placement, could affect current flow to targeted areas. The hypothesis th

BACKGROUND: Recent findings suggest that transcranial direct current stimulation of the primary motor cortex may ameliorate freezing of gait. However, the effects of multitarget simultaneous stimulation of motor and cognitive networks are mostly unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of multitarget transcranial direct current stimulation of the primary motor cortex and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex on freezing of gait and related outcomes.
METHODS: Twenty patients with Parkinson's disease and freezing of gait received 20 minutes of transcranial direct current s

BACKGROUND: Cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation has been reported to enhance motor associative learning and motor adaptation, holding promise for clinical application in patients with movement disorders. However, behavioral benefits from cerebellar tDCS have been inconsistent.
OBJECTIVE: Identifying determinants of treatment success is necessary. BDNF Val66Met is a candidate determinant, because the polymorphism is associated with motor skill learning and BDNF is thought to mediate tDCS effects.
METHODS: We undertook two cerebellar tDCS studies in subjects genotyped for BDNF V

The experience of flow ensues when humans engage in a demanding task while task demands are balanced with the individual's level of skill or ability. Here, we further tested the hypothesis that the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) plays a causal role in mediating flow experience using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to interfere with MPFC's deactivation evoked by a flow paradigm and measured by magnetic resonance (MR)-based perfusion imaging. In a balanced, within-subjects repeated measure design, three treatments of tDCS (sham, anodal, cathodal) were applied in a sample of 22 he

Focal epilepsy is a network pathology, where the brain connectivity of the epileptic focus (EF) influences seizure frequency and cortical dysfunction. Growing evidence supports a clinical efficacy of cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (ctDCS) in drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). ctDCS effects can be merely attributed to the inhibition of cortical excitability, which is abnormally increased in epilepsy, but its effect on brain network of DRE patients has never been reported. We aimed at exploring the hypothesis that functional connectivity (FC) changes may explain part of ctDCS clini

Cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (ctDCS) is known to enhance adaptation to a novel visual rotation (visuomotor adaptation), and it is suggested to hold promise as a therapeutic intervention. However, it is unknown whether this effect is robust across varying task parameters. This question is crucial if ctDCS is to be used clinically, because it must have a consistent and robust effect across a relatively wide range of behaviors. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of ctDCS on visuomotor adaptation across a wide range of task parameters that were systematically var

The cerebellum plays an important role in the planning, initiation and stability of movements, as well as in postural control and balance. Modulation of neural regions underlying balance control may be a potential alternative to treat balance impairments in cerebellar patients. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive and safe tool capable to modulate cerebellar activity. We aim to investigate the effects of cerebellar tDCS (ctDCS) on postural balance in healthy individuals. Fifteen healthy and right-handed subjects were submitted to three sessions of ctDCS (anodal, cath
