5 patients (3 men, 2 women, aged from 28 to 51 years) with unilateral facial palsy after surgery of a cerebellopontine angle tumour have been investigated by transcranial magnetic stimulation. The purpose was to evaluate the prognostic aspects of this method, which was compared with the electrical stimulation of the facial nerve and the elicitation of an orbicularis-oculi reflex. The components of the blink reflex were absent in all cases. In 3 patients electrical stimulation was possible (compound muscle action potentials were delayed). With transcranial magnetic stimulation ipsilateral short

The primary motor cortex is involved in initiation and adaptive control of locomotion. However, the role of the motor cortex in controlling gait trajectories remains unclear. In animals, cortical neuromodulation allows for precise control of step height. We hypothesized that a similar control framework applies to humans, whereby cortical stimulation would primarily increase foot elevation. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was applied over the motor cortex to assess the involvement of the corticospinal tract over the limb trajectory during human walking. Ten healthy adults (aged 20-32 ye

BACKGROUND: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is considered a promising technique to noninvasively modulate cortical excitability and enhance cognitive functions. Despite the growing interest in using TMS to facilitate reading performance in learning disabilities, the immediate TMS-induced effects on brain activity during reading and language tasks in adults with typically developed reading skills remain to be further investigated. In the current study, we explored how a single offline session of intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) delivered to core left-hemisphere nodes of the d

Functional bowel disorder (FBD) is a common gastrointestinal disease syndrome characterized by dysmotility and secretion without known organic lesions. The pathogenesis of FBD is still unclear. In recent years, with the rise of neurogastroenterology, it has initially revealed its close relationship with the "brain-gut axis." Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a technique for detecting and treating the nervous system, that is characterized by non-invasiveness and painlessness. TMS plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, and provides a new method for the treat

OBJECTIVE: Preoperative grading of nonenhancing motor eloquent gliomas is hampered by a lack of specific imaging surrogates. Tumor grading is crucial for the informed consent discussion before tumor resection. In this paper, the authors hypothesized that navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS)-derived metrics could provide significant information to distinguish between high- and low-grade motor eloquent gliomas that present as nonenhancing tumors and therefore contribute to improving patient counseling, timing of treatment, preoperative planning, and intraoperative strategies.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been established as an important and effective treatment for various psychiatric disorders. However, its effectiveness has likely been limited due to the dearth of neuronavigational tools for targeting purposes, unclear ideal stimulation parameters, and a lack of knowledge regarding the physiological response of the brain to TMS in each psychiatric condition. Modern optical imaging modalities, such as functional near-infrared spectroscopy and diffuse optical tomography, are promising tools for the study of TMS optimization and functional targeting in

INTRODUCTION: Episodic migraine is a debilitating condition associated with vast impairments of health, daily living, and life quality. Several prophylactic treatments exist, having a moderate ratio of action related to side effects and therapy costs. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an evidence based therapy in several neuropsychiatric conditions, showing robust efficacy in alleviating specific symptoms. However, its efficacy in migraine disorders is unequivocal and might be tightly linked to the applied rTMS protocol. We hypothesized that multifocal rTMS paradigm could

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive procedure used in the treatment of depression. We observed TMS-associated mania with psychotic symptoms in a 55-year-old male diagnosed with MDD and generalized anxiety disorder without history of psychosis or mania. Owing to poor pharmacotherapeutic response and worsening symptomatology, TMS was introduced while continuing phenelzine; this was initially successful in demonstrating positive effects on mood. However, the patient began to develop symptoms consistent with mania with psychosis and was hospitalized. Both TMS and phenelzine we

Trichotillomania is a psychiatric disorder characterised by compulsive pulling out of one's hair resulting in hair loss, which is included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th edition category 'obsessive-compulsive disorder and related disorders'. Behavioural therapy and some medications are suggested for the treatment of trichotillomania, though these are not effective for all patients. Therefore, new treatment options are needed. Five female patients diagnosed with trichotillomania applied low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over bila

INTRODUCTION: The possibility of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) as an alternative therapy for essential tremor (ET) patients has emerged. However, its effect on medicated ET patients is lacking. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the effect of cerebellar low-frequency rTMS as an "add-on" treatment.
METHODS: In this single-blinded, randomized, sham-controlled pilot study, patients with ET were randomized into two groups, one receiving real-rTMS and the other sham-rTMS. For 5 days, 1200 stimulations per day were applied to the bilateral cerebellar hemispheres at

OBJECTIVES: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is increasingly being utilised as a treatment option for depression, and with this comes a need for a practical review of safety issues intended for clinicians. This article provides an overview of the current literature regarding safety issues with rTMS for depression, and provides recommendations for clinical practice.
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, rTMS is a well-tolerated treatment with common side effects (such as headache or local pain at the site of stimulation) being mild. Severe adverse effects, such as seizures, hearing impairme

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a promising tool for noninvasive investigation of brain oscillations. TACS employs frequency-specific stimulation of the human brain through current applied to the scalp with surface electrodes. Most current knowledge of the technique is based on behavioral studies; thus, combining the method with brain imaging holds potential to better understand the mechanisms of tACS. Because of electrical and susceptibility artifacts, combining tACS with brain imaging can be challenging, however, one brain imaging technique that is well suited to be ap

BACKGROUND: In this meta-analysis, we explore the role of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a noninvasive neuromodulation technique in the treatment of chronic pain.
METHODS: Studies comparing rTMS and conventional treatment for chronic pain were searched. The comparison was made for decrease in the pain scores with and without (sham) the use of rTMS after a follow-up interval of 4-8 weeks. All reported pain scores were converted into a common scale ranging from "0" (no pain) to "10" (worst pain).
RESULTS: Nine trials with 183 patients in each of the groups were included i
