Seeing the wood for the trees--the early papers of Denis Burkitt.

Denis Burkitt's was a remarkable career. A surgeon in the Colonial Medical Service in Uganda, his keen observation of the incidence of jaw tumours in children led him to describe a new form of lymphatic cancer. He confirmed, for the first time in man, that a cancer was caused by a virus and, most remarkable of all, he discovered a cure--low-dose chemotherapy. The condition was named after him--Burkitt's lymphoma--and with this came membership of a select group of eponymous Irishmen, including Graves, Colles and Corrigan. His ability to link the incidence of disease with geographical distributi

Phylogenetic-Pheromone Associations Obscured by Stabilising Selection and Natal Tree Effect in a Tree-Killing Bark Beetle.

Insects are highly reliant on chemical cues such as pheromones to facilitate communication and navigation. Some of the roles of pheromones include attracting and finding mates and conspecifics, and in these cases, we expect stabilising selection to dampen within-population pheromone variation. On the other hand, standing pheromone variation may lead to barriers to gene flow and saltational shifts that facilitate divergence and speciation. We investigated the relationships between pheromone variation and genetic variation in the spruce beetle, Dendroctonus rufipennis Kirby, a bark beetle that i

Bioinformatic identification of monkeypox virus phylogenetic gene trees that are representative of its whole-genome phylogenetic tree.

Phylogenetic analysis based on whole-genome sequences is the gold standard for monkeypox virus (MPXV) phylogeny. However, genomic epidemiology capability and capacity are lacking or limited in resource poor countries of sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, these make real-time genome surveillance of MPXV virtually impossible. We hypothesized that phylogenetic analysis based on single, conserved genes will produce phylogenetic tree topology consistent with MPXV whole-genome phylogeny, thus serving as a reliable proxy to phylogenomic analysis. In this study, we analyzed 62 conserved MPXV genes and sho

Tree pollen allergy. II. Sensitization to various tree pollen allergens in Sweden. A multi-centre study.

In a multi-centre study, comprising 16 clinics, 871 adult hay fever patients were studied. Most patients included had springtime hay fever. Skin prick tests were performed with 20 different tree or bush pollen (lignoses) allergens. RAST determinations were done with eight different tree pollen allergens in 590 patients. Birch pollen (BP) allergen gave the highest frequency of positive test results. The test results with the various tree pollen allergens in patients with BP allergy were compared with those in patients without BP allergy. With all the allergens a significantly higher frequency o

Urban Tree Canopy and Environmental Justice: Examining the Distributional Equity of Urban Tree Canopy in Guangzhou, China.

Rapid urbanization has led to a series of environmental problems that are harmful to the physical and mental health of residents. Not only can increasing urban tree canopy (UTC) improve sustainable city development, but it can also effectively promote the quality of life for residents; however, the uneven spatial distribution of UTC can also bring about social justice problems. Currently, there are few studies related to the justice of UTC distribution in China. Based on this, the paper adopts object-oriented image classification technology to interpret and extract UTC data from satellite imag

Classification and regression tree analysis of acute-on-chronic hepatitis B liver failure: Seeing the forest for the trees.

At present, there is no ideal model for predicting the short-term outcome of patients with acute-on-chronic hepatitis B liver failure (ACHBLF). This study aimed to establish and validate a prognostic model by using the classification and regression tree (CART) analysis. A total of 1047 patients from two separate medical centres with suspected ACHBLF were screened in the study, which were recognized as derivation cohort and validation cohort, respectively. CART analysis was applied to predict the 3-month mortality of patients with ACHBLF. The accuracy of the CART model was tested using the area

A genus-labeled dataset of individual trees outside forests in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Detailed data on individual trees growing outside forests (TOF) are essential for arboriculture, biodiversity assessment, ecosystem services assessment, climate adaptation, and environmental health research. However, existing datasets are often incomplete and seldom provide taxonomic information beyond publicly managed trees in cities of Germany and other countries where maintaining a tree cadaster is a legal requirement. Here, we present for the first time a statewide dataset of individual TOF in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, including tree locations, crown geometry, height, and ge

Escitalopram treatment for patients with major depressive disorder: decision trees for treatment algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Current treatment algorithms for major depressive disorder (MDD) lack dynamic prediction capabilities, leading to delayed therapeutic adjustments. This study sought to develop escitalopram-specific decision tree models to identify critical treatment adjustment time points and optimize personalized treatment strategies for MDD. METHODS: Using longitudinal data from two multicenter studies in China (2015-2020), we analyzed 800 patients with MDD receiving escitalopram monotherapy. Decision tree models incorporated baseline characteristics (age, BMI, disease duration, depressive sympt

Biotechnological adaptation of high-yielding, gibberellin-overproducing Populus trees to seasonal growth patterns.

Tree growth is central to both terrestrial ecology and the forestry industry. Biotechnology for inducing the overproduction of phytohormones such as gibberellins (GAs) is a powerful tool for improving tree yield and wood properties. Augumentation of GAs in trees in temperate and boreal regions, however, prevents the induction of vegetative dormancy, which results in reduced yield and tree loss over time. Hybrid Populus trees (Populus tremula × P. tremuloides; Ptt) use an internal circadian clock to synchronise their daily metabolism and seasonal growth with predictable light and temperature ch

Adaptive Use of Co-Data Through Empirical Bayes for Bayesian Additive Regression Trees.

For clinical prediction applications, we are often faced with small sample size data compared to the number of covariates. Such data pose problems for variable selection and prediction, especially when the covariate-response relationship is complicated. To address these challenges, we propose to incorporate external information on the covariates into Bayesian additive regression trees (BART), a sum-of-trees prediction model that utilizes priors on the tree parameters to prevent overfitting. To incorporate external information, an empirical Bayes (EB) framework is developed that estimates, assi

Improved CKD classification based on explainable artificial intelligence with extra trees and BBFS.

Chronic kidney disease is a persistent ailment marked by the gradual decline of kidney function. Its classification primarily relies on the estimated glomerular filtration rate and the existence of kidney damage. The kidney disease improving global outcomes organization has established a widely accepted system for categorizing chronic kidney disease. explainable artificial intelligence for classification involves creating machine learning models that not only accurately predict outcomes but also offer clear and interpretable explanations for their decisions. Traditional machine learning models

Attract and kill trees? No simple solution for Anoplophora glabripennis (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) control.

Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky), the Asian longhorned beetle, is a serious wood-boring pest of hardwood trees. There have been records that suggest Elaeagnus angustifolia L. (Elaeagnaceae) might be an "attract and kill" tree species for A. glabripennis, i.e., a tree that is attractive to A. glabripennis adults but kills their oviposited eggs. To evaluate the possibility of E. angustifolia as a control measure for A. glabripennis, we carried out a series of behavioral experiments in the laboratory and in the field. Results showed that: (i) A. glabripennis females preferred E. angustifoli

Structured adaptive boosting trees for detection of multicellular aggregates in fluorescence intravital microscopy.

Fluorescence intravital microscopy captures large data sets of dynamic multicellular interactions within various organs such as the lungs, liver, and brain of living subjects. In medical imaging, edge detection is used to accurately identify and delineate important structures and boundaries inside the images. To improve edge sharpness, edge detection frequently requires the inclusion of low-level features. Herein, a machine learning approach is needed to automate the edge detection of multicellular aggregates of distinctly labeled blood cells within the microcirculation. In this work, the Stru

Medical management or surgery for acute cholecystitis: Enhancing treatment selection with decision trees.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to create an algorithm using the decision tree method to classify patients with suspected acute cholecystitis into those who may improve with medical treatment, those who should undergo surgery for acute cholecystitis, and those with complicated cholecystitis, using laboratory parameters alone. METHODS: A total of 1,352 patients treated for acute cholecystitis at our hospital over four years were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into groups based on whether they received medical treatment or surgery. Various demographic and laboratory parameters wer

Using classification trees to identify psychotherapy patients at risk for poor treatment adherence.

To determine the relative importance of a wide variety of personality and psychopathology variables in influencing patients' adherence to psychotherapy treatment. Two classification trees were trained to predict patients' (1) treatment utilization (i.e., their likelihood of missing a given appointment) and (2) termination status (i.e., their likelihood of dropping out of therapy prematurely). Each tree was then validated in an external dataset to examine performance accuracy. Patients' social detachment was most influential in predicting their treatment utilization, followed by affective insta

Forecasting Postoperative Delirium in Older Adult Patients with Fast-and-Frugal Decision Trees.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is associated with increased complication and mortality rates, particularly among older adult patients. However, guideline recommendations for POD detection and management are poorly implemented. Fast-and-frugal trees (FFTrees), which are simple prediction algorithms, may be useful in this context. We compared the capacity of simple FFTrees with two more complex models-namely, unconstrained classification trees (UDTs) and logistic regression (LogReg)-for the prediction of POD among older surgical patients in the perioperative setting. Models were trained and tested

To Hop or Not to Hop? The Answer Is in the Bird Trees.

Birds can use different types of gaits to move on the ground: they either walk, hop, or run. Although velocity can easily explain a preference for running, it remains unclear what drives a bird species to favor hopping over walking. As many hopping birds are relatively small and arboreal, we wanted to test the link between size, arboreality, and hopping ability. First, we carried out ancestral character state reconstructions of size range, hopping ability, and habitat traits on over 1000 species of birds. We found that both hopping ability and arboreality were derived and significantly correla
