A program against bacterial bioterrorism: improved patient management and acquisition of new knowledge on infectious diseases.

In 2002 it was decided to establish laboratory facilities in Denmark for diagnosing agents associated with bioterrorism in order to make an immediate appropriate response to the release of such agents possible. Molecular assays for detection of specific agents and molecular and proteomic techniques for identification of bacteria were introduced as part of the program. All assays and techniques were made accessible for use in diagnosing patients, even when an intentional release was not suspected. Medical expertise on different diseases was established at the department as an integrated part of

The Use of Rabbits Used to Propagate Human Lice for Research.

The globally important human diseases of trench fever, epidemic typhus, and relapsing fever are vectored by the human louse Pediculus humanus humanus. Although these conditions are epidemically quiescent at present, they persist in socially dysfunctional situations of war, deprivation, and crowding. The taxonomically closely related head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis, does not respect economic or social status and is quite common in most countries. The 2 types of lice are now recognized as conspecific ecotypes of a single species. While the body louse has been adapted for propagation in the

Bartonella (Rochalimaea) quintana infection in a seronegative hemodialyzed patient.

Bartonella quintana is a reemerging pathogen responsible for trench fever, endocarditis, bacteremia, and bacillary angiomatosis. We previously reported the first case of a patient with B. quintana-induced chronic adenomegaly, and here we present a report on a second patient. A hemodialyzed patient with Sjögren's syndrome presented with mediastinal adenomegalies and secondary pancytopenia. All diagnostic investigations remained negative, except that a Bartonella-like microorganism was isolated from a bone marrow biopsy. The isolate was identified as B. quintana by a specific mouse polyclonal an

The First World War years of Sydney Domville Rowland: an early case of possible laboratory-acquired meningococcal disease.

Sydney Domville Rowland was a bacteriologist and staff member at the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine when the First World War broke out in 1914. Following a request to the Director of the Lister Institute to staff and equip a mobile field laboratory as quickly as possible, Rowland was appointed to take charge of No. 1 Mobile Laboratory and took up a temporary commission at the rank of Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps. On 9 October 1914, Rowland set out for the European mainland and was subsequently attached to General Headquarters in Saint-Omer, France (October 1914-June 1915

Bartonella quintana Endocarditis: A Systematic Review of Individual Cases.

BACKGROUND: Bartonella quintana is a louse-borne bacterium that remains a neglected cause of endocarditis in low-resource settings. Our understanding of risk factors, clinical manifestations, and treatment of B. quintana endocarditis are biased by older studies from high-income countries. METHODS: We searched Pubmed Central, Medline, Scopus, Embase, EBSCO (CABI) Global Health, Web of Science and international trial registers for articles published before March 2023 with terms related to Bartonella quintana endocarditis. We included articles containing case-level information on B. quintana end

Prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by Bartonella quintana in a patient during immunosuppressive therapies for collagen vascular diseases.

Bartonella quintana, known to cause various clinical symptoms, is increasingly recognized as one important cause of culture-negative endocarditis. We report a case of infectious endocarditis with B. quintana on the prosthetic valve, accompanied by proteinase 3-antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-positive collagen vascular disease-like symptoms 1 year earlier.

Bartonella endocarditis in patients with right ventricle-to-pulmonary artery conduit: 2 case reports and literature review.

Bartonella species are Gram-negative bacilli and fastidious bacteria that can cause a number of clinical syndromes, including blood culture-negative infective endocarditis (IE). The two most commonly isolated species in humans are Bartonella quintana, the agent of trench fever, and Bartonella henselae, mostly known for causing cat scratch disease (Edouard et al., 2015 [1]; Edouard and Raoult, 2010 [2]). Both species also cause bacillary angiomatosis, primarily in immunocompromised patients (Edouard et al., 2015 [1]; Fournier et al., 2001 [3]). The risk of B. henselae IE is increased in patient

Endocarditis caused by Bartonella Quintana, a rare case in the United States.

Bartonella quintana is a relatively rare cause of endocarditis in the United States (USA). Historically it was linked with trench fever, but cardiac involvement seems to be more prevalent recently. There are some known risk factors associated with Bartonella quintana endocarditis such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, alcoholism, homelessness and poor hygiene. We report a case of 37-year-old African man, with culture negative endocarditis, emboli and rising B. quintana and B. henselae IgG titers. B. quintana DNA was subsequently detected from the mitral valve sample with 16S rRN

Evidence for louse-transmitted diseases in soldiers of Napoleon's Grand Army in Vilnius.

BACKGROUND: Many soldiers in Napoleon's Grand Army died of infectious diseases during its retreat from Russia. Because soldiers were commonly infested with body lice, it has been speculated that louse-borne infectious diseases, such as epidemic typhus (caused by Rickettsia prowazekii), were common. METHODS: We investigated this possibility during recent excavations of a mass grave of Napoleon's soldiers in Vilnius, Lithuania. Segments of 5 body lice, identified morphologically and by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and sequencing, were found in earth from the grave that also con

Development of a Technique Using Artificial Membrane for In Vitro Rearing of Body Lice Pediculus humanus humanus.

Human lice are the only hematophagous ectoparasites specific to human hosts. They transmit epidemic typhus, trench fever and relapsing fever, diseases which have already caused millions of deaths worldwide. In order to further investigate lice vectorial capacities, laboratory-controlled live lice colonies are essential. Previously developed lice-rearing methods significantly advanced research on louse-borne diseases and louse biology. In this study, we aimed to develop a rearing technique for the Orlando (Or) strain of body lice on an artificial membrane. We tested two systems, namely the Hemo

Identification of repellent odorants to the body louse, Pediculus humanus corporis, in clove essential oil.

The control of body lice is an important issue for human health and welfare because lice act as vectors of disease such as typhus, relapsing fever, and trench fever. Body lice exhibit avoidance behavior to some essential oils, including clove essential oil. Therefore, odorants containing clove essential oil components may potentially be useful in the development of repellents to body lice. However, such odorants that induce avoidance behavior in body lice have not yet been identified from clove essential oil. Here, we established an analysis method to evaluate the avoidance behavior of body li

Sequencing of a new target genome: the Pediculus humanus humanus (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae) genome project.

The human body louse, Pediculus humanus humanus (L.), and the human head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis, belong to the hemimetabolous order Phthiraptera. The body louse is the primary vector that transmits the bacterial agents of louse-borne relapsing fever, trench fever, and epidemic typhus. The genomes of the bacterial causative agents of several of these aforementioned diseases have been sequenced. Thus, determining the body louse genome will enhance studies of host-vector-pathogen interactions. Although not important as a major disease vector, head lice are of major social concern. Resis

The response to the trench diseases in World War I: a triumph of public health science.

The recent 90-year anniversary of the Battle of the Somme presents an opportunity to examine the public health response to the trench diseases, new conditions which arose in the trenches of World War I. Throughout history, there have been two views of epidemic disease: the configurationist and contagionist perspectives. Most doctors responding to the trench diseases, 'contingent-contagionists', combined these two conceptions of disease. Because of the difficulty of finding a causative organism and the absence of effective treatment, the majority view became that these conditions were a product
