Bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO) lameness is the most critical animal health and welfare issue facing the broiler industry worldwide. It is estimated that 1 to 2% of bird condemnation at marketing age is caused by BCO lameness, resulting in tens of millions of dollars in annual losses. Fast-growing broilers are prone to mechanical stress that triggers bacterial translocation across epithelial barriers into the bloodstream, followed by bacterial colonization in the growth plate of long bones, and eventually, bone necrosis and lameness. Mycotoxins (MTX) are secondary metabolite

Using alternative feed ingredients in pig diets can lead to deoxynivalenol (DON) contamination. DON has been shown to induce anorexia, inflammation, and-more recently-alterations in the vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus metabolisms. Adding vitamin D supplementation in the form of vitamin D3 and 25-OH-D3 to the feed could modify the effects of DON in piglets. In this study, vitamin D3 or 25-OH-D3 supplementation was used in a control or DON-contaminated treatment. A repetitive exposure over 21 days to DON in the piglets led to disruptions in the vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus metabolisms,

BACKGROUND: Deoxynivalenol (DON), one of the most prevalent mycotoxins, has been found to cause fetal growth retardation in animals. However, limited evidence exists regarding its effects on pregnant women.
METHODS: Maternal urinary concentration of total DON (tDON) and free DON (fDON) in the second trimester was measured using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Provisional daily intake (PDI) of DON was calculated based on tDON concentration. Linear and logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between DON exposure levels and birth weight, birth length

Immunoassay-based techniques are important on-site screening tools for the detection of mycotoxins in cereals. This study aims to evaluate the trueness, precision, repeatability and cross-reactivity of commercially available test strips, ELISA kits and UHPLC-MS/MS on analyzing zearalenone, ochratoxin A, deoxynivalenol, T-2 toxin and fumonisin B1. The results showed that false negative rate (25.7 %-37.4 %) of all tested mycotoxins by test strips was higher than the false positive rate (0 %-31.0 %). The repeatability of ELISA kits at the declared LOD dispersed from -85.7 % to +98.4 %. ELISA kits

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of berberine (BBR) on the intestinal health of piglets exposed to deoxynivalenol (DON). A total of 180 weaned piglets were randomly allotted to 1 of 3 treatment groups with 10 replication pens per treatment and 6 piglets per pen. The treatments were basal diet, basal diet +4 mg/kg DON, and basal diet +4 mg/kg DON +40 mg/kg BBR. The experiment lasted for 21 d. BBR improved the growth performance of DON-challenged piglets. BBR could inhibit DON-induced intestinal injury by increasing the expression of serum antioxidant enzymes and T cell surface a

Bovine mycotoxicosis is a disorder caused by the ingestion of fungal toxins. It is associated with chronic signs, such as reduced growth rate and milk yield, and causes significant economic cost to the dairy industry. The mycotoxins deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEN), and fumonisin B1 (FB1) are commonly found in grain fed to cattle. Patulin (PA) is a common grass silage contaminant but is also found in grain. The effects of these mycotoxins on cellular function at low concentrations are not well understood. Using Madin-Darby bovine kidney cells we evaluated the cellular response to these

Deoxynivalenol (DON [vomitoxin]), one of trichothecene mycotoxins produced by the fungus Fusarium, is commonly detected in cereal foods across the world. DON induces diverse toxic effects in humans and animals, including emesis and diarrhea, anorexia, and immunotoxicity, and impaired maternal reproduction and fetal development. Recently, the teratogenic potential of DON has been shown and has received much attention. DON can cause various skeletal deformities in fetuses, but the underlying mechanisms have not yet been fully examined. In this study, fetal skeletal malformations in DON-treated m

In the European coastal dunes, marram grass (Ammophila arenaria) is planted in order to control sand erosion. In the years 1986 to 1991, workers on the Wadden islands in the Netherlands planting marram grass showed lesions of skin and mucous membranes, suggesting a toxic reaction. Fusarium culmorum dominated the mycoflora of those marram grass culms that were used for planting. This plant material had been cut and stored for more than one week in the open. The Fusarium toxin deoxynivalenol (DON) was detected in the suspect marram grass culms. Isolated F. culmorum strains were able to produce D

This study examined the protective effect of total glucosides of Paeonia (TGP) against deoxynivalenol (DON)-induced liver and intestinal injury in weaned piglets. Eighteen 21-day-old piglets (mean body weight ∼7 kg) were randomly assigned to three groups: control (CON, basal diet), DON (DON-contaminated diet), and DON+TGP (DON-contaminated diet supplemented with 200 mg/kg TGP), with six replicates per group and one piglet per replicate. Compared with the CON group, DON exposure significantly decreased serum antioxidant levels. Supplementation with TGP restored serum total antioxidant capacity

Mycotoxins are widespread dietary contaminants whose health impacts are expected to intensify under climate change. Although their mechanisms of toxicity remain incompletely understood, epigenetic dysregulation has been increasingly implicated. Here, mass spectrometry-based multi-omics was used to profile histone post-translational modifications and proteome dynamics in HepG2 cells exposed to seven mycotoxin conditions. Time-resolved analyses identified tenuazonic acid as the dominant cellular disruptor, inducing alterations in H3K27 and H1 variants, and revealing a previously unrecognized oxi

Placental inflammation and dysfunction play critical roles in adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preeclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction. Exposure to environmental factors, such as dietary toxins, infectious agents, and pollution, is thought to increase the risk of these outcomes. Despite the widespread use of HTR-8/SVneo and BeWo cells as trophoblast models, their comparative sensitivity to maternal exposome-related stimuli has not been systematically evaluated within the same experimental framework. we examined the responses of HTR-8/SVneo and BeWo trophoblast cell lines to mycot

Feed ingredients used in poultry production are frequently co-contaminated with multiple mycotoxins, posing challenges that conventional binders alone may not offer comprehensive mycotoxin mitigation. Hence, this study evaluated the efficacy of mycotoxin deactivator, Biofix Select® with FUMzyme® (a multi-component mycotoxin deactivator) on growth performance, antioxidant activity, immune response, and cecal microbiota in broilers exposed to fumonisin (FBs) and deoxynivalenol (DON). A total of 360 one-day-old broiler chicks were randomly distributed in a 2 × 2 factorial design. The dietary trea

Mycotoxins, such as aflatoxins (AFs), deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEN), and ochratoxin A (OTA), present significant health risks due to their carcinogenic and toxic properties. This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the global prevalence, concentration, and associated health risks of mycotoxins in domestic bird eggs. Following the PRISMA guideline, a comprehensive search was performed across PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (2005-2024). Thirteen studies, encompassing 8,410 egg samples, were analyzed. The pooled prevalence and concentration of mycotoxins w

Mycotoxins have the potential to increase the risk of airway or intestinal infection due to their effects on epithelial integrity and function. The bacterium Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is often carried in pigs and can cause outbreaks of invasive disease, leading to sepsis and meningitis in postweaning piglets. In this study, we tested the effect of two Fusarium mycotoxins (deoxynivalenol (DON) and T-2) on the integrity of the intestinal epithelium and their interaction with S. suis. Porcine ileal organoids were exposed to DON and T-2 individually or in combination and co-cultured with or wit

Deoxynivalenol (DON), a prevalent and highly toxic mycotoxin in animal feed, poses significant risks to livestock health and productivity. This study evaluates the effectiveness of iron-manganese oxide (Fe/Mn oxides) in degrading DON. The DON degradation rate of Fe/Mn oxide reached 98.46 % in a controlled solution under specific conditions (0.2 % concentration, 37-85 °C, pH 6-7, 1-minute reaction time). When applied to actual feed, it reduced DON levels by approximately 49.3 % and remained stable in simulated gastrointestinal environments of weaned piglets. A 28-day trial involving 48 weaned p

Deoxynivalenol (DON) contamination is widespread in crops and could easily cause intestinal injury, which brings hazards to animals. Mitochondria are considered as an important target of DON, nevertheless, the mechanism is still unclear. Mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membranes (MAMs) have gained arousing interest and are recognized as critical signaling hubs that control calcium signaling transduction between ER and mitochondria. This study aims to investigate the effects of DON on intestinal barrier, mitochondria, MAMs and inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate receptors (IP3Rs)-mit
