A new, simple and selective method for the analysis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in foods by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is proposed. Several derivatising procedures based on the formation of an HMF silylated derivative using different reagents were studied. Among the derivatising reagents examined, N,O-bis-trimethylsilyltrifluoroacetamide (BSTFA) provided the best derivatisation yield. The urine of two patients with Refsum's disease consistently contained 2,6-dimethyloctanedioic acid, a compound not normally found in human urine. In addition, their urines contained increased concentrations of 3-methylhexanedioic acid. These two compounds may be formed from phytanic acid by an initial omega-oxidation and subsequent beta-oxidations. It was calculated that this oxidation pathway may metabolize at least 30 mg of phytanic acid per day.

The physicochemical characteristics and flavor-related compounds of thigh meat derived from diverse Korean native chickens (KNC), namely Hanhyup No. 3 (HH3), Woorimatdag No 1 (WRMD 1), and Woorimatdag No 2 (WRMD 2), under fresh and frozen-thawed conditions were studied and compared with those of commercial broilers (CB). Recent studies of the synthesis, structures, spectroscopic properties, and reactions of a series of isolable metallylenes (R2E:, E = Si (1), Ge (2), and Sn (3); R2 = 1,1,4,4-tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)butane-1,4-diyl) are summarized.
