How wildlife respond to tropical cyclones: short-term tactics and long-term impacts.

From butterflies to lizards and from sharks to seabirds, wildlife exhibit tactics to survive the impacts of tropical cyclones, also known as hurricanes, cyclones, or typhoons depending on where they occur. Some species seek refuge during the storm by moving, some remain in place and ride it out, and others move longer distances, avoiding the main impacts of the storm altogether. Tropical cyclones can have direct impacts on wildlife (e.g. mortality) but can also have indirect effects by altering resources and habitat, with downstream impacts on abundance and recruitment. Using examples from acr

Persistent and untreated tropical infectious diseases among Sudanese refugees in the United States.

A comprehensive medical evaluation to identify persistent and untreated tropical infections among members of the Sudanese group "Lost Boys of Sudan" living in Atlanta, GA, was initiated. Medical examinations and laboratory testing including blood cell counts, liver function tests, stool studies for parasites, hepatitis B serologies, and serologic testing for Schistosoma spp., Strongyloides, and filariae were performed. Preliminary results showed a high prevalence of untreated active schistosomiasis and strongyloidiasis infections in this group, 5 years after their resettlement in the United St

Protocol Paper: A Randomized Trial of 2 Creams in the Skin Care of Patients Receiving Radiation Therapy for Breast Cancer in the Tropics.

BACKGROUND: Nurses working in a northern Australia Radiation Therapy Unit advise all patients undergoing radiation therapy to use a readily available nonprescription moisturizing cream to minimize the severity of radiation skin reactions. However, patients report that the cream is thick and difficult to use in the humid tropical climate, and nurses anecdotally suspect an increase in severe skin reactions during the summer months. OBJECTIVE: This article presents the protocol for a randomized controlled trial that addressed a lack of evidence pertaining to the use of topical creams to prevent

Aboveground biomass in Australian tropical forests now a net carbon source.

Tropical forests act as important global carbon sinks1, and Earth System Models predict increasing near-term carbon sink capacity for these forests, with elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration thought to stimulate tree growth2,3. However, current forest inventory data analyses suggest that the carbon sink capacity of intact tropical forests may be in decline, portending a possible future switch from carbon sinks to carbon sources3-7. Here we use long-term forest inventory data (1971-2019) from Australian moist tropical forests and a causal inference framework8-10 to assess the carbo

Improving influenza forecast in the tropics and subtropics: a case study of Hong Kong.

Influenza forecasts could aid public health response as shown for temperate regions, but such efforts are more challenging in the tropics and subtropics due to more irregular influenza activities. Here, we built six forecast approaches for influenza in the (sub)tropics, with six model forms designed to model seasonal infection risk (i.e. seasonality) based on the dependence of virus survival on climate conditions and to flexibly account for immunity waning. We ran the models jointly with the ensemble adjustment Kalman filter to generate retrospective forecasts of influenza incidence in subtrop

Tropical infectious diseases and skin manifestations: a diagnostic framework.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cutaneous manifestations of tropical and subtropical infections represent a significant clinical and public health concern, affecting both populations in endemic regions and international travelers with significant socioeconomic burden and social stigma. In light of contemporary climate change, increased human mobility and urbanization, these infections have increased in incidence and gained a broader geographical distribution.Nevertheless, achieving a diagnosis remains challenging due to overlapping clinical presentations, often limited access to advanced diagnostic tools,

The mycetoma knowledge gap: identification of research priorities.

Mycetoma is a tropical disease which is caused by a taxonomically diverse range of actinomycetes (actinomycetoma) and fungi (eumycetoma). The disease was only recently listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a neglected tropical disease (NTD). This recognition is the direct result of a meeting held in Geneva on February 1, 2013, in which experts on the disease from around the world met to identify the key research priorities needed to combat mycetoma. The areas that need to be addressed are highlighted here. The initial priority is to establish the incidence and prevalence of the dise

First report of the isolation of Balamuthia mandrillaris in the northern region of Japan.

Balamuthia mandrillaris is a free-living amoeba that lives in soil and water near human settlements. B. mandrillaris was first isolated from a mandrill baboon that died at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Park in California in 1986, and the first human infection was reported in 1990. Although reported B. mandrillaris infections are often not properly characterized, it appears that B. mandrillaris invades the living body from the soil and water, either via a wound or the nasal cavity. Most confirmed infections have originated in South and North America. B. mandrillaris inhabits warm climates and is r

Possible Northward Introgression of a Tropical Lineage of Rhipicephalus sanguineus Ticks at a Site of Emerging Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

Increasing rates of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico underscore the importance of studying the ecology of the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, the vector in that region. This species is reported to comprise distinct tropical and temperate lineages that may differ in vectorial capacity for RMSF and are hypothesized to be limited in their geographical range by climatic conditions. In this study, lineage was determined for ticks from 9 locations in California, Arizona, and Mexico by DNA sequencing of 12S, 16S, and D-loop ribosomal

[Global warming: trailblazer for tropical infections in Germany?].

Since 1850, the CO (2) content of the atmosphere has increased from 280 to 360 ppm, and the average surface temperature has risen from 14.6 to 15.3 C . A further increase between 1.8 and 4.0 C is expected for the 21st century. Temperate and cold climate zones are affected predominantly, but tropical regions are not spared. At the same time, the world wide climate effects of the "El Niño Southern Oscillation" are amplified. Global warming enhances the growth of tropical pathogens (malarial plasmodia, leishmania, yellow fever virus, dengue virus, West Nile virus, Vibrio cholerae) and vectors (an

Management of tropical urban parks informed by divergent stomatal regulation of trees.

As climate change intensifies urban environmental challenges, cities increasingly rely on urban green spaces as climate adaptation infrastructure. Urban trees provide critical ecosystem services through root water uptake and leaf water loss, yet how their stomata respond to atmospheric drivers in tropical urban environments remains poorly understood. This research examines how ten dominant tree species in Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park, Bangkok regulate stomatal conductance (gs) in response to vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) across wet and dr

Ecosystem Resilience and Land-Use Governance: Remote Sensing Insights for Environmental Management in a Tropical Dry Forest.

Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests (SDTFs), such as the Brazilian Caatinga, are highly vulnerable to climate change and chronic anthropogenic disturbances. Despite extensive land-use conversion, understanding how vegetation productivity and resilience vary across different land governance regimes remains a critical gap. Here, we integrated two decades (2004-2024) of remote sensing data to evaluate Net Primary Productivity (NPP) and Water Use Efficiency (WUE). We applied interannual climate anomaly analyses (Z-scores) and adapted a trend-based classification framework to assess ecosystem trajector

Mechanistic yellow fever modelling under climate change in Brazil and beyond: Information gaps and future steps.

Yellow fever (YF) remains a significant public health threat in tropical regions, particularly in South America and Africa. The combined forces of climate change, land-use, urbanisation, globalisation, and insufficient surveillance and health infrastructure are driving the re-emergence and expansion of YF into new areas. While mathematical models have been used to estimate transmission risk, disease burden, and the impact of vaccination, there remains a crucial gap in mechanistic models that explicitly capture how climate and environmental changes directly influence YF transmission. To address

Climate change and the potential effects on maternal and pregnancy outcomes: an assessment of the most vulnerable--the mother, fetus, and newborn child.

In 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) presented a large amount of evidence about global warming and the impact of human activities on global climate change. The Lancet Commission have identified a number of ways in which climate change can influence human health: lack of food and safe drinking water, poor sanitation, population migration, changing disease patterns and morbidity, more frequent extreme weather events, and lack of shelter. Pregnant women, the developing fetus, and young children are considered the most vulnerable members of our species and are already marg

Intensification of daily tropical precipitation extremes from more organized convection.

Tropical precipitation extremes and their changes with surface warming are investigated using global storm resolving simulations and high-resolution observations. The simulations demonstrate that the mesoscale organization of convection, a process that cannot be physically represented by conventional global climate models, is important for the variations of tropical daily accumulated precipitation extremes. In both the simulations and observations, daily precipitation extremes increase in a more organized state, in association with larger, but less frequent, storms. Repeating the simulations f

Differential distribution patterns of Fonsecaea agents of chromoblastomycosis, exemplified by the first case due to F. monophora from Argentina.

Chromoblastomycosis is a mutilating infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissues caused by melanized fungi belonging to the order Chaetothyriales. Proven cases of the main agent, Fonsecaea pedrosoi are mainly limited to (sub)tropical, humid climates of Latin and Central America and the Caribbean. Fonsecaea monophora has a global distribution along the equator. Cases outside the (sub)tropics have thus far mostly been considered to have been imported, but here we report the first endemic case by F. monophora from Argentina. Patient was a 82-year-old rural female worker from Corrientes, a provi
