Non-respiratory tuberculosis in Canada. Epidemiologic and bacteriologic features.

Of the total cases of tuberculosis reported in Canada between 1970-1974, approximately one-sixth (3671 cases) involved primarily non-respiratory organs. Common diagnostic entities were genitourinary tuberculosis (1516 cases), lymphadenitis (1083 cases), bone and joint tuberculosis (555 cases), gastrointestinal tuberculosis (155 cases) and meningitis (138 cases). The remainder (224 cases) involved a wide variety of organs. Between 1967 and 1977 the morbidity rates of most non-respiratory manifestations steadily declined, the decline in meningitis being particularly marked. In contrast, lymphade

Gut microbiota and tuberculosis infection: interaction and therapeutic potential.

Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), is a serious chronic infectious disease. Although significant progress has been made in the prevention and treatment of MTB, current anti-tuberculosis therapies still face numerous challenges. The human gut microbiota, a complex ecosystem, plays a role in host metabolism, immune regulation, and health maintenance. Recent studies have increasingly highlighted a close relationship between gut microbiota and PTB. The gut microbiota, through the gut-lung axis, mediates the immune processes of PTB, while MTB infection can dis

[A case of pulmonary tuberculosis associated with tuberculous fistula of anus].

A 39-year old male visited the hospital complaining of perianal pain, swelling and redness. Under the diagnosis of an anal abscess, drainage was performed repeatedly. As the wound failed to heal and fistulae were detected, excision of entire tract was performed. On histopathological examination of the resected fistulae, caseous necrosis, Langhans giant cells, and epithelioid cell infiltration were found and diagnosed as anal tuberculosis. Chest X-ray showed cavitary lesion with infiltrative shadow in right upper lobe. Acid-fast bacilli were positive in sputum, and the diagnosis of pulmonary tu

Intestinal tuberculosis and secondary liver abscess.

The incidence of intestinal tuberculosis (ITB) has been increasing in the West, due to the AIDS epidemic, transglobal immigration, IV drug abuse, an aging population, and an increase in the number of immunocompromised patients. Obstruction and perforation of the intestine are the most common and serious complications of ITB. Another complication, tuberculous liver abscess (TLA), is rare and usually associated with foci of infection in the lung or gastrointestinal tract. We report a case of a 17-year-old boy with Down syndrome who presented with multiple TLAs secondary to obstructive and multip

Intestinal tuberculosis with perforation in an immunocompetent adult presenting with chronic abdominal pain: A case report.

Intestinal tuberculosis is a rare extrapulmonary manifestation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, often presenting with non-specific symptoms that delay diagnosis, even in immunocompetent individuals. This case report describes the clinical course, diagnostic workup and surgical findings of an immunocompetent adult male who developed intestinal tuberculosis with perforation. The present study reports the case of a 39-year-old male patient with a history of smoking, alcohol consumption, occasional cannabis consumption, poor hygienic practices and a family history of tuberculosis, who developed prog

Unusual presentations of abdominal tuberculosis.

OBJECTIVE: To review unusual presenting features and diagnostic difficulties of abdominal tuberculosis in an endemic region. DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study from 1984 to 1989, illustrated by case reports. SETTING: A single hospital in Kuwait. PATIENTS: Fifty patients with abdominal tuberculosis established by the standard histologic and bacteriologic demonstration of acid-fast bacilli or tuberculous granulomas. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Site of disease and unusual features at presentation. RESULTS: Tubercular lesions are most commonly seen in the ileocecal region. They are also common i

Young Male Presenting with an Acute Diarrheal Illness with Unexplained Transudative Ascites: An Atypical Presentation of Appendicular Tuberculosis.

INTRODUCTION: Appendicular tuberculosis is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis involving the gastrointestinal tract. Diagnosis of appendicular tuberculosis is difficult due to its atypical presentation. Histological confirmation remains the gold standard in diagnosis. Case Presentation. We report a 37-year-old Sri Lankan male presenting with a diarrheal illness with high fever for 8 days in the background of constitutional symptoms for 1-month duration. He was pale and had moderate amount of free fluid in the abdomen. Inflammatory markers were elevated, and CT abdomen revealed a thicken

[Tuberculosis and atypical mycobacterioses in HIV infection. Results from the Bonn Center 1985 to 1989].

485 HIV-positive patients have been treated at our institution in Bonn during 1985 to 1989. Mycobacterial infections occurred in twelve (2.5%) HIV-positive patients. Of 166 AIDS-manifestations according to CDC, eleven (6.6%) were mycobacterial infections. There occurred one case of miliary tuberculosis, six cases of extrapulmonary, one of disseminated tuberculosis and four cases of atypical mycobacteriosis. Mycobacteriosis other than tuberculosis (MOTT) were caused three times by Mycobacterium kansasii and once by Mycobacterium scrofulaceum. Tuberculosis was seen less often in haemophiliacs. D

Abdominal tuberculosis misdiagnosed as acute surgical abdomen and carcinomatosis.

Tuberculosis is a major public health problem worldwide. Tuberculosis can be confused with other diseases and its diagnosis is frequently delayed, especially in areas of low prevalence. Abdominal tuberculosis includes involvement of the gastrointestinal tract, peritoneum, lymph nodes, and/or solid organs; and accounts for 5% of all cases of tuberculosis. We report two cases of young patients who presented preoperatively as acute abdomen due to acute appendicitis. During surgery, these cases were misdiagnosed as "carcinomatosis", and in the postoperative period these cases were complicated with

Primary paraduodenal tuberculosis in its pseudotumoral form: A case report and review of the literature.

Abdominal tuberculosis presents with nonspecific clinical and radiological features, often leading to diagnostic and therapeutic delays. Retroperitoneal pseudo-tumoral tuberculosis is a rare radio-clinical entity, characterized by its atypical and confusing symptomatology. We present the case of a 48-year-old male patient with no significant medical history, who was admitted to our department with a right retroperitoneal tumor presented as right renal colic due to compression of the lumbar ureter. Initially misdiagnosed as a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of the lower duodenal angle, th

Peritoneal tuberculosis in an immunocompetent patient: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis is endemic in Colombia, the prevalence of its pulmonary form in immunocompetent hosts is high, and peritoneal compromise instead is rare and difficult to diagnose. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old female patient living in a rural area presented to the emergency department with constitutional and gastrointestinal symptoms, including bloating, diarrhea, significant weight loss, nocturnal diaphoresis, and gradual onset of ascites with abdominal pain. Diagnostic workup, including paracentesis, a transvaginal ultrasound, and an abdominal CT scan, did not suggest malignan

Primary tubercular liver abscess in an immunocompetent adult: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Isolated primary tubercular abscess is one of the rare forms of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. A greater awareness of this rare clinical entity may help in commencing specific evidence-based therapy quickly and preventing undue morbidity and mortality. CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old man, of Asian origin, developed a hepatic tubercular abscess which was not associated with any pulmonary or gastrointestinal tract foci of tuberculosis. An ultrasonogram of the abdomen showed an abscess in the right lobe of his liver which was initially diagnosed as an amoebic liver abscess. Subseque

Abdominal tuberculosis: CT evaluation.

The computed tomography (CT) scans of 27 patients with abdominal tuberculosis were reviewed retrospectively to determine the range of abdominal involvement. Most patients had been at increased risk because of intravenous drug abuse, alcoholism, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), cirrhosis, or steroid therapy. The etiologic agent was Mycobacterium tuberculosis in 23 patients and M. avium-intracellulare in four patients with AIDS. In five patients, tuberculosis was limited to the abdomen. CT findings included adenopathy, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, ascites, bowel involvement, pleural eff
