Chronic or persistent, nonhealing perianal ulcers could be due to an infection, inflammation, or a neoplasm. Perianal ulcer as the initial presentation of tuberculosis is rare. Tuberculosis cutis orificialis is a rare ulcerative form of cutaneous tuberculosis that affects the oral cavity, anal canal, or perianal region. A high index of suspicion for tuberculosis as the cause of persistent perianal ulcer is required for early diagnosis and treatment.

A 50-year-old female presented with fever, symmetrical arthralgias, rash, painful oral ulcerations and alopecia since 8 weeks. Examination showed mild hepatospleenomegaly. Investigations revealed leucocytosis, neutrophilia, elevated sedimentation rate and raised ferritin levels (3850 ng/ml). Computerized tomography (CT) abdomen showed hepatospleenomegaly, mild ascitis and mild bilateral pleural-effusion. After ruling out occult infections, tuberculosis, malignancies and autoimmune diseases by appropriate investigations, and due to raised ferritin levels, adult onset stills disease (AOSD) was d

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. According to the World Health Organization, tuberculosis is the leading cause of death by an infectious disease worldwide. We describe here a rare case of tuberculosis that presented as a giant nodule of the soft palate mimicking a tumor. A 50-year-old man was admitted to the oral and facial surgery department for odynophagia and nocturnal snoring. The clinical examination of the oral cavity revealed a mass on the right side of the soft palate, pushing back the uvula on the left, measuring 3 cm in le

Understanding host-pathogen interactions between Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis is critical for elucidating pathogen-specific infection dynamics. This pilot study was designed to compare the progression of infection in mice following inoculation with M. bovis or M. tuberculosis via intratracheal or oral gavage routes. We utilized the C3H/HeJ strain, a susceptible mouse model that exhibits severe pulmonary inflammation and poor bacterial control, a valuable tool for studying the spectrum of tuberculosis infection. Direct pulmonary inoculation of M. bovis was associated with

Mycobacterium bovis bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is the most widely used live bacterial vaccine. However, limited information is available correlating route and dose of vaccination and induction of specific T cell responses with protection against tuberculosis. We compared efficacy of oral and systemic vaccination and correlated vaccine-induced T cell responses with protection in experimental tuberculosis of mice. After oral and systemic vaccination, we observed profound differences in persistence and dissemination of BCG and frequencies and location of specific IFN-gamma-secreting CD4(+) and

In this review, the status of vaccination strategies to reduce bovine tuberculosis of cattle and wildlife reservoirs of the disease is discussed, with a focus on recent developments. Recent work in vaccines to protect humans against tuberculosis has been followed by a similar surge of interest in developing vaccines against bovine tuberculosis. The human vaccine, bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) affords protection against tuberculosis in cattle, but this protection is variable. In addition, vaccination with BCG compromises control strategies based on skin testing animals. In general, no single va

Granulomatous amoebic encephalitis due to Acanthamoeba spp is a rare, near-fatal central nervous system infection. It is often seen in immunocompromised individuals. Here we describe a survivor of this infection who was co-infected with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. He presented to us with features of meningitis and a history of chronic cough. The chest X-ray was classical for pulmonary tuberculosis. Neuroimaging was suggestive of encephalitis; herpes simplex virus PCR was negative. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) showed lymphocytic pleocytosis. Wet mounts revealed trophozoites of Acanthamoeba C

BACKGROUND: Isolated gastric tuberculosis is extremely rare, especially in the subcardiac region, where the low pH, high motility and absence of lymphoid tissue result in an unfavourable environment for the development of tuberculous lesions.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Here we present a case of isolated gastric tuberculosis in the gastric cardia with no evidence of pulmonary involvement. Our patient was a young man with vague gastrointestinal symptoms and no previous history of tuberculosis. His condition was first detected on upper endoscopy as a raised subcardiac ulcer similar in appearance to a

A rare form of lingual tuberculosis in an elderly man is described. It was manifested clinically as nodular infiltration, causing strong pain. The case was diagnosed histologically. Tuberculous bacilli were found. The patient did not react to tuberculin. An X-ray examination showed miliary tuberculous involvement of the lung with excavation.

Rationale: Completion of preventive therapy is a major bottleneck in global tuberculosis control. Long-acting injectable drug formulations would shorten therapy administration and may thereby improve completion rates. Recently, a long-acting formulation of bedaquiline demonstrated antituberculosis activity for up to 12 weeks after injection in a validated mouse model of preventive therapy. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to 1) determine the total duration of activity after an injection of long-acting bedaquiline and 2) evaluate the activity of regimens comprised of long-acting be

Behcet's disease is a chronic, multisystem variable vessel vasculitis characterised by recurrent oral and genital ulcers, ocular inflammation and a wide range of systemic manifestations. Pseudo-Behcet's syndrome refers to a condition that mimics these clinical features but arises from distinct etiologies. We present a case of a 33-year-old male with year-long recurrent oral ulcers and intermittent abdominal pain, followed by scrotal ulcers, severe fatigue, weight loss and appetite loss. Chest imaging demonstrated bilateral consolidations with cavitation and right-sided pleural effusion, prompt

Tuberculosis is a highly contagious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It affects about 10 million people each year and is still one of the leading causes of death worldwide. About 2 to 3 billion people (equivalent to 1 in 3 people in the world) are infected with latent tuberculosis. Moreover, as the number of multidrug-resistant, extensively drug-resistant, and totally drug-resistant strains of M. tuberculosis continues to increase, there is an urgent need to develop new anti-tuberculosis drugs that are different from existing drugs to combat antibiotic-resistant M. tuberculosis. Tuberculous lesions of the oral cavity are rare and can be a diagnostic challenge, particularly in young immunocompetent patients. Most of the cases in the literature are secondary to pulmonary disease, whereas primary form is uncommon. This paper presents a case of gingival tuberculosis in a 26-year-old Indian female patient, manifesting as a rapidly extensive ulcer. The diagnosis was confirmed by histopathology and immunological investigations. Although oral manifestations of tuberculosis are rare, clinicians should include them in the differential diagnosis of various types of oral ulcers.

Miliary mottling is most commonly seen in tuberculosis. Clinical features of tuberculosis mimic many other lung diseases. Here we report a 40 yr old male with clinical features suggestive of tuberculosis, miliary mottling on skiagram chest and granulomatous hepatitis on histopathology. Case was finally diagnosed as sarcoidosis on liver biopsy and improved on oral corticosteroid.

Although tuberculosis of tongue has been previously reported, its infrequent clinical presentation and increased chance of being overlooked during routine examination of the oral cavity, make it worthy of documentation. Lingual tuberculosis is usually associated with tuberculosis of the oropharynx, lungs, lymph nodes, and miliary tuberculosis. Primary tuberculosis of the tongue is extremely rare and is seldom reported. Early diagnosis of tuberculosis elsewhere in body and its effective treatment by antituberculous drugs may be the reason for its uncommon presentation. The relationship between

Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic specific granulomatous disease and a major cause of death in developing countries. The clinical presentation of TB lesions of the oral cavity varies widely and can manifest as ulcerations, diffuse inflammatory lesions, granulomas and fissures. Oral lesions generally appear secondary to primary TB infection elsewhere, although primary infection of the oral mucosa by Mycobacterium tuberculosis has also been described. We hereby report a case of primary TB of the gingiva manifesting as gingival enlargement. Diagnosis was based on histopathological examination, compl

Tuberculosis rarely affects the breast. This report presents a case of a microbiologically confirmed primary tubercular breast abscess in a young Ethiopian woman. A 26-year-old woman presented with left breast swelling and pain for 1 year. She was initially suspected to have a pyogenic abscess of the breast and was treated with unspecified oral antibiotics but had no clinical response. In addition, surgical drainage was done, followed by a 4-week course of oral amoxicillin-clavulanic acid. However, the swelling gradually increased in size and formed a sinus tract with a purulent discharge. Sub

The case was 71-year-old woman. She was diagnosed as drug sensitive pulmonary tuberculosis (bII3 by the GAKKAI classification) and the chemotherapy with INH, RFP, EB and PZA was started. Two months later back pain and hemiparesis of both lower limbs appeared and it was diagnosed as caries of the 10th thoracic vertebrae. Because she was confined to bed and impossible to eat orally, the parenteral-hyperalimentaiton therapy was started with the central vein catheter. Howerer, nutritional state, pulmonary tuberculosis lesions and caries symptoms deteriorated. Then percutaneous endoscopic gastrosto
