Tungiasis Outbreak in Travelers From Madagascar.

Seven patients from a group of 16 travelers were diagnosed at our institution with one or more sand fleas on their toes, 1 day to 3 weeks after returning from Madagascar. A questionnaire was sent to the whole group to collect clinical and epidemiological information, which showed that 9 of 13 (69%) had received pre-travel medical advice, but none were aware of sand flea; thus prevention measures were rarely applied. Five of seven (71%) patients wore open sandals throughout the trip. Overall, 10 sand fleas were extracted.

Investigation of Ctenocephalides felis on domestic dogs and Rickettsia felis infection in the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe.

Rickettsia felis is an obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacterium which causes flea-borne spotted fever in humans. In the past decades, R. felis has been detected worldwide in Ctenocephalides felis fleas and various other arthropods. However, due to its shared symptoms with other common vector-borne diseases, human infection is prone to be underestimated or misdiagnosed, especially in the malaria-endemic areas including sub-Saharan Africa, where confirmatory laboratory diagnoses are not usually available. In this study, a 'One Health' approach was adopted to explore potential vector-borne

Prevalence of Tungiasis and its risk factors of among children of Mettu woreda, southwest Ethiopia, 2020.

Tungiasis is caused by the flea tunga penetrans and results in painful skin lesions, skin infections, and permanent disability. However, limited information is available that shows the magnitude of the problem and its risk factors that help for intervention in Ethiopia. The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors of tungiasis in children aged 5 to 14 in Mettu woreda in 2020. A community based cross sectional study was conducted among randomly selected kebeles of Mettu woreda, in Southwest Ethiopia. To select study participants, multistage sampling was used. The data

A mixed-methods approach to understanding domestic dog health and disease transmission risk in an indigenous reserve in Guyana, South America.

Domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) can transmit a variety of pathogens due to their ubiquitousness in urban, rural and natural environments, and their close interactions with wildlife and humans. In this study, we used a mixed-methods approach to assess the role of domestic dogs as potential intermediaries of disease transmission from wildlife to humans among indigenous Waiwai in the Konashen Community Owned Conservation Area, Guyana. To address these objectives we 1) performed physical examinations and collected biological samples to assess Waiwai domestic dog health, and 2) administered

Successful Treatment of Severe Tungiasis in Pigs Using a Topical Aerosol Containing Chlorfenvinphos, Dichlorphos and Gentian Violet.

BACKGROUND: In endemic communities, zoonotic tungiasis, a severe skin disease caused by penetrating female sand fleas, is a public health hazard causing significant human and animal morbidity. No validated drugs are currently available for treatment of animal tungiasis. Due to the reservoir in domestic animals, integrated management of human and animal tungiasis is required to avert its negative effects. METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A topical aerosol containing chlorfenvinphos 4.8%, dichlorphos 0.75% and gentian violet 0.145% licensed to treat tick infestations, myiasis and wound sepsis in

Effectiveness of dimeticone oils versus sodium carbonate solution in the treatment of tungiasis in Kenya: a non-inferiority randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a cutaneous parasitic disease caused by the female flea Tunga penetrans. The World Health Organization recommends two-component dimeticone (NYDA®) as the sole treatment for tungiasis; however, this topical medication is not available in Kenya. In western Kenya, sodium carbonate has been adopted as a traditional village-based treatment. A pilot study found that the proportion of dead fleas on day 7 was higher with NYDA® treatment than that with 5% sodium carbonate treatment (87% vs. 64%, respectively). This study was aimed at assessing the 11-day cure rates of tungiasis

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Tungiasis Among Selected Regions of Ethiopia: A Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Tungiasis, caused by the female sand flea Tunga penetrans, is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) with substantial health and socioeconomic burdens in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of tungiasis and identify associated risk factors in Ethiopia's Oromia and Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR). METHODS: We systematically searched Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, Science Direct, and African Journal Online (AJOL) for studies published between October 2015 and Sep

Control of tungiasis through intermittent application of a plant-based repellent: an intervention study in a resource-poor community in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis, an ectoparasitosis caused by the female sand flea Tunga penetrans, is an important health problem in many impoverished communities in the tropics. Sand flea disease is associated with a broad spectrum of clinical pathology and severe sequels are frequent. Treatment options are limited. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We assessed the effectiveness of the intermittent application of the plant-based repellent Zanzarin to reduce infestation intensity and tungiasis-associated morbidity in a resource-poor community in Brazil, characterized by a very high attack rate. The stud

National prevalence and risk factors for tungiasis in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a highly neglected tropical skin disease caused by the sand flea, Tunga penetrans, the female of which burrows into the skin, causing pain and itching. The disease occurs throughout South America and sub-Saharan Africa but there are few systematic data on national disease burdens. The tungiasis research community is keen to develop survey methods to fill this gap. Here we used a school-based, thorough examination method to determine the prevalence and risk factors for tungiasis in Kenya. METHODS: We conducted the first nationally representative survey of tungiasis, in

Treatment of tungiasis using a tea tree oil-based gel formulation: protocol for a randomised controlled proof-of-principle trial.

INTRODUCTION: Tungiasis (sand flea disease or jigger infestation) is a neglected tropical disease caused by penetration of female sand fleas, Tunga penetrans, in the skin. The disease inflicts immense pain and suffering on millions of people, particularly children, in Latin America, the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, there is no standard treatment for tungiasis, and a simple, safe and effective tungiasis treatment option is required. Tea tree oil (TTO) has long been used as a parasiticidal agent against ectoparasites such as headlice, mites and fleas with proven safety and effica

Estimation of the global burden of tungiasis in endemic countries using a disability adjusted life-years modelling approach.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a neglected tropical zoonotic skin disease which is endemic to Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, caused by sand fleas of the genus Tunga, which burrow into the skin of affected humans and animals, most commonly when the feet come in contact with infested soil. Sand flea infection leads to inflammation, severe itching, and pain, with the potential for secondary bacterial or viral infections, gangrene, and disfigurement. Tungiasis disproportionately affects poor rural communities, and individuals living in unhygienic settlements. To date, the existing burden of tungi

Jigger flea infestation (tungiasis) in rural western Tanzania: high prevalence and severe morbidity.

Epidemiologic and clinical data on the parasitic skin disease tungiasis are limited from sub-Saharan Africa, and virtually nonexistent from the East African region. We performed a community-based cross-sectional study in two villages in Kasulu district, western Tanzania. Study participants were examined for the presence of tungiasis and disease-associated morbidity. In total, 586 individuals >5 years of age were enrolled, and 249 (42.5%; 95% CI: 38.5-46.5) diagnosed with tungiasis. The ≥45 year-olds showed highest prevalence of tungiasis (71.1%) and most severe parasite load (median number of

Targeting Non-coding RNA for Glioblastoma Therapy: The Challenge of Overcomes the Blood-Brain Barrier.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most malignant form of all primary brain tumors, and it is responsible for around 200,000 deaths each year worldwide. The standard therapy for GBM treatment includes surgical resection followed by temozolomide-based chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. With this treatment, the median survival rate of GBM patients is only 15 months after its initial diagnosis. Therefore, novel and better treatment modalities for GBM treatment are urgently needed. Mounting evidence indicates that non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have critical roles as regulators of gene expression. Long non-coding
