Based on examinations of 416 patients with acute abdomen the authors discuss the importance of ultrasonographic examinations. In all conditions and pathological conditions with an acute abdominal symptomatology ultrasonography of the abdomen is a valuable diagnostic asset. In the complex of clinical, biochemical and X-ray examinations it hastens the diagnosis and makes it more accurate, makes an early and expedient conservative or surgical intervention possible and improves the prognosis.

Polyorchidism is an unusual abnormality of the genital tract in which supernumerary testicles are present, usually within the scrotum. We report a recently encountered case with no remarkable symptoms. Preoperative ultrasonographic evaluation differentiates this rare benign entity from more ominous abnormalities such as neoplastic involvement of the scrotal contents.

We describe a case of adenocarcinoma of the urachus in which endovesical ultrasonography was used preoperatively to assess accurately the nature and extent of the neoplasm. Endovesical ultrasonography is a simple and safe technique that may be of value in the routine evaluation of invasive bladder neoplasms.

Two hundred and thirty patients had scrotal ultrasonography over an 18-month period. We report the ultrasound findings, correlation with the clinical diagnosis and, where possible, with the pathological diagnosis. The results show the value of scrotal ultrasonography in clinical practice. Of particular interest is the ultrasonic examination of the clinically normal or impalpable testis and the correct ultrasound diagnosis of testicular tumour in five cases (2% of all cases, 28% of tumours detected) thought clinically to be benign. A brief review of abnormal appearances is included.

In order to evaluate ultrasonography in patients with suspected hip joint effusions, 123 consecutive patients were examined prospectively. Twenty healthy subjects were used as a control group. The normal sonoanatomy, the recommended scanning approach, and the diagnostic features of intra-articular joint effusions are presented.
