Penalizing underage alcohol use is associated with lower mortality for young drivers: Use/lose laws and their association with motor vehicle collision mortality.

BACKGROUND: Motor vehicle collisions (MVC) continue to be a leading cause of mortality for youth in the United States. Since 2010, seven states have revoked mandatory laws that suspended licenses for underage alcohol use, also known as use/lose laws. This study analyzed whether each state's policy change was associated with increased youth MVC mortality. METHODS: State mortality data for youth ages 15 years to 20 years in MVCs involving a young driver (i.e., ages 15-20 years) were obtained from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System. Population data was retrieved from the Centers for Disease

Volumetric trajectories of hippocampal subfields and amygdala nuclei influenced by adolescent alcohol use and lifetime trauma.

Alcohol use and exposure to psychological trauma frequently co-occur in adolescence and share many risk factors. Both exposures have deleterious effects on the brain during this sensitive developmental period, particularly on the hippocampus and amygdala. However, very little is known about the individual and interactive effects of trauma and alcohol exposure and their specific effects on functionally distinct substructures within the adolescent hippocampus and amygdala. Adolescents from a large longitudinal sample (N = 803, 2684 scans, 51% female, and 75% White/Caucasian) ranging in age from

Gender Differences in Socio-ecological Determinants of Alcohol Use Among Hispanic Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Compared to other racial groups, Hispanic/Latino(a) adolescents experience higher rates of alcohol (ab)use and alcohol-related problems. Evidence suggests there are gender differences in alcohol use patterns indicating the likelihood of gender differences in how various determinants influence alcohol use among the genders. Assessing the mechanisms that contribute to Hispanic adolescents' alcohol use requires an understanding of the multidimensional social and environmental processes that operate together to impact their alcohol use. In this study, we examined socio-ecological deter

Physical Activity Interventions to Decrease Substance Use in Youth: A Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent substance use, a major problem in the United States, has a significant negative effect on both short- and long-term mental and physical health. Physical activity (PA) may offer potentially effective strategies to combat substance use in youth. Like substance use, PA behaviors developed during adolescence persist into adulthood, so adolescence may be an ideal period in which to implement PA interventions to prevent substance abuse. However, there are no known systematic literature reviews of PA-based interventions that target substance use in adolescence. OBJECTIVES: To

Associations of unhappiness with sociodemographic factors and unhealthy behaviours in Chinese adolescents.

Evidence on the effects of lack of physical exercise, alcohol drinking and smoking on happiness is limited and inconsistent. We examined the associations of unhappiness with sociodemographic factors and these unhealthy behaviours in Chinese adolescents. In a school-based survey in 2012-13 in Hong Kong, 45 857 secondary school students (mean age 14.8 years, 54.0% boys) reported their happiness level (not happy at all/not very happy/happy/very happy), frequency of physical exercise, alcohol drinking status, smoking status and sociodemographic factors. A main and a sensitivity analysis examined t

Parental monitoring affects the relationship between depressed mood and alcohol-related problems in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Parental monitoring has been identified as a protective factor for adolescent drinking, whereas depressed mood, peer substance use, and peer tolerance of substance use have been identified as risk factors. The purpose of this study was to test the association between depressed mood and alcohol-related problems in adolescents, and to test whether parental monitoring and peer substance use/tolerance of use moderate the strength of this relationship. METHODS: Participants included 227 adolescents (Mage = 15.36; 51.5% female) recruited from a hospital emergency department and surround

The relationship between alcohol supply source and young people's risky drinking and alcohol-related problem behaviours in Victoria, Australia.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether source of alcohol supply is related to adolescent underage drinkers' reports of risky drinking and alcohol-related problem behaviours. METHODS: In 2003/04, a cross-sectional survey of 2,644 16-17 year-olds were recruited from Victorian households and surveyed by phone as part of the Victorian Youth Alcohol and Drug Survey. The results were analysed to determine whether alcohol supply source was associated with weekly or more frequent risky single occasion drinking (RSOD) and reports of alcohol-related problem behaviours. RESULTS: Around 20% (524/2,644) of the

Age-varying associations between adverse childhood experiences profiles and heavy episodic drinking across adolescence and adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines how profiles of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with heavy episodic drinking (HED) across ages 12-42 using longitudinal data from the nationally representative National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) study. METHOD: We used up to five waves of longitudinal data from Add Health (N = 3,147; 58.8% female, 41.2% male; 64.7% White, 19.7% African American/Black, 9.3% Hispanic/Latino, 2.8% Asian, 2.7% other). We first used latent class analysis to uncover profiles marked by different patterns of ACEs experienced before

Developmental trajectories of child and adolescent emotional problems: associations with early adult alcohol use behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Whether emotional problems during childhood and adolescence are longitudinally associated with adult alcohol use behaviors is unclear. This study examined associations between developmental trajectories of emotional problems and early adult alcohol use behaviors, while considering co-occurring conduct problems, developmental change/timing, sex differences, and potential confounds. METHODS: Participants were from the Twins Early Development Study (analytic N = 19,908 individuals). Emotional and conduct problems were measured by parent reports at child ages 4, 7, and 9 years and via

Heavy adolescent drinking makes the adult brain more vulnerable to ethanol by permanently altering the age-dependent interplay between alcohol, GIRK channels and activin.

Adolescent binge drinking is a risk behavior associated with the development of neuropsychiatric disorders later in life, but the pathophysiological mechanisms rendering the adolescent brain vulnerable to the long-term consequences of heavy alcohol consumption are only partially understood. Here, we used a mouse model of adolescent binge drinking and focussed on G protein-gated inwardly rectifying potassium (GIRK) channels which are a molecular target of both ethanol and the pluripotent growth and differentiation factor activin A. In whole-cell recordings from dentate gyrus granule cells in br

Social attunement and alcohol use: The role of age and gender.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use typically peaks during adolescence and early adulthood, when its social reinforcement value is high, and then decreases as individuals take on more adult-like responsibilities. The present study investigates whether social attunement (SA) plays a role in higher alcohol use in adolescence as well as a lower alcohol use when aging. METHODS: This online study included an international sample of 683 alcohol users (16 - 81yrs). Participants completed a SA Questionnaire, an Implicit SA task (ISAT), and measures of alcohol use. The ISAT measured SA as the change in willingnes

The differential effects of parent-targeted alcohol harm-reduction campaigns with varying executional styles.

INTRODUCTION: Parental provision of alcohol to children is associated with a range of negative outcomes. Public health campaigns discouraging this practice are required as part of a comprehensive approach to reduce alcohol-related harm among minors, however, limited research has examined the relative effectiveness of different messaging approaches. This study compared the effects of two campaigns with different executional styles on parents' intentions to provide alcohol to minors-one campaign used a fear-based approach and the other adopted a first-person narrative approach. METHODS: The stu

Trauma Exposure and Problem Drinking in Late Adolescence: A Latent Profile Analysis.

Exposure to early traumatic events has been implicated in problem drinking during late adolescence, and this association may be stronger among youth with emotion regulation deficits. The purpose of this study was to identify subgroups of late adolescents based on trauma type, including loss, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms; and emotion regulation deficits that confer the risk for problematic drinking behaviors. A sample of 946 participants (M age = 18.84 years, SD = 1.06) was analyzed with mixed-indicator latent profile analysis to identify subgroups and explore whether these sub

Associations between nucleus accumbens structural connectivity, brain function, and initiation of binge drinking.

Adolescent alcohol use is associated with increased risk for alcohol use disorders later in life; therefore, identifying biomarkers for initiation of heavy alcohol use, such as individual differences in the development of white-matter microstructure, may inform prevention strategies that improve public health. This prospective cohort study included 40 adolescents, ages 14 and 15, without substantial history of alcohol or drug use at baseline. Fractional anisotropy (FA), an index of white-matter microstructure, was assessed in pathways connecting the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) to the rest of the
