Multi-Class Pharmaceutical Profiling Along an Urbanization Gradient in a Tropical Megacity River: Evidence for Cumulative Loading and Limited Attenuation.

Urban pharmaceutical pollution threatens aquatic ecosystems and human health, yet tropical watersheds remain understudied compared to temperate systems. Here we demonstrate a gradient-based approach to diagnose cumulative pharmaceutical loading in Jakarta's Ciliwung River. We analyzed 53 compounds across eight sites and detected 13 pharmaceuticals spanning antibiotics, analgesics, cardiovascular agents, and iodinated contrast media (ICMs). Downstream concentrations of the pooled contaminants increased significantly (R2 = 0.209, p < 0.001), with gabapentin showing the strongest cumulative gradi

First Covid-19 Vaccination Rates Among Pregnant Tennessee Women by Month of Conception and Urbanization Level: March 2021 - November 2021.

INTRODUCTION: Throughout the pandemic, COVID-19 vaccination coverage was lower for the general population living in rural counties than in urban counties. In Tennessee (TN), COVID-19 vaccinations became available to pregnant women in March 2021. Little is known about rates of COVID-19 vaccination in pregnancy during the pandemic, or whether these rates changed or differed by urbanization level. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to describe COVID-19 vaccination rates among pregnant women in TN by month of conception and urbanization level. METHODS: COVID-19 vaccination data from the TN Im

Spatial heterogeneity in risk-adjusted return of spontaneous circulation after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: the urbanization-adjusted RACA model.

BACKGROUND: Registry-based benchmarking of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) requires well-calibrated risk adjustment across Emergency Medical Services (EMS) systems. Existing risk-adjustment models, however, do not account for urbanization-related heterogeneity, which may contribute to systematic urbanization-stratified miscalibration, bias cross-system benchmarking, and misdirect quality improvement. We developed and validated an urbanization-adjusted ROSC after cardiac arrest (URACA) by incorporating Eurostat's Degree of Urbanisation (DEGURBA) into RACA and assessed whether it improv

Climate Change, Urbanization, and the Emerging Urban Threat of Rift Valley Fever in Tropical and Subtropical Cities: A Narrative Review.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a climate-sensitive mosquito-borne zoonosis long regarded as a rural, pastoral disease, yet accelerating tropical urbanization and intensifying climate variability may be reshaping its epidemiology at the urban-peri-urban interface. This narrative review examines how global climate change and urban-specific climatic conditions jointly shape RVF virus (RVFV) vector habitats, transmission, and burden in tropical and subtropical cities, synthesizing 51 of 412 English-language records identified by a structured, non-systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, an

Association between blood cadmium and vitamin D levels in the Yangtze Plain of China in the context of rapid urbanization.

BACKGROUND: China has experienced rapid urbanization in the past 30 years. We aimed to report blood cadmium level (BCL) in the rapidly urbanized Yangtze Plain of China, and explore the association between BCL and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D). METHODS: Our data source was the Survey on Prevalence in East China for Metabolic Diseases and Risk Factors (SPECT-China) cross-sectional study (ChiCTR-ECS-14005052, www.chictr.org). We enrolled 3234 subjects from 12 villages in the Yangtze Plain. BCLs were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry. 25(OH)D was measured with a chemiluminescence assay.

Rapid urbanization of red foxes in Estonia: distribution, behaviour, attacks on domestic animals, and health-risks related to zoonotic diseases.

Urban areas are becoming increasingly important for wildlife as diminishing natural habitats no longer represent a suitable environment for many species. Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are nowadays common in many cities worldwide, and in recent years they have colonized urban areas in Estonia. We used a public web-based questionnaire approach to evaluate the distribution and behaviour of Estonian urban foxes, to detect related problems and to assess health risks to humans and domestic animals. In total, 1205 responses were collected throughout the country. Foxes have colonized the majority of Eston

Trends in malaria indicators in urban and peri-urban areas of Bamako: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Despite global efforts, progress in malaria elimination has stagnated since 2010, particularly in urban areas of sub-Saharan Africa facing rapid urbanization. Urban transmission dynamics, worsened by environmental changes and emerging threats like Anopheles stephensi, remain largely understudied. Current control strategies are predominantly based on rural data, highlighting the necessity for tailored approaches suited to urban settings. This review addresses trends in malaria indicators in Bamako to refine control strategies. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to describe the t

Fine-scale spatial mapping of urban malaria prevalence for microstratification in an urban area of Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a focal disease and more localized in low endemic areas. The disease is increasingly becoming a concern in urban areas in most sub-Saharan African countries. The growing threats of Anopheles stephensi and insecticide resistance magnify this concern and hamper elimination efforts. It is, therefore, imperative to identify areas, within urban settings, of high-risk of malaria to help better target interventions. METHODS: In this study, a set of environmental, climatic, and urban covariates were combined with observed data from a malaria prevalence study in Ghana and geospa

Chagas disease in urban and peri‑urban environment in the Amazon: Sentinel hosts, vectors, and the environment.

Chagas disease is an anthropozoonosis, caused by a flagellated protozoan, Trypanosoma cruzi, in which the enzootic cycle occurs between mammals and triatomines. Two dogs with a history of sudden death were necropsied at the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). One dog had a pale area in the myocardium, which on histopathological examination showed a T. cruzi amastigote nest; immunohistochemistry (IHC) analysis characterized it as acute Chagas disease (ACD). The second dog showed no macroscopic changes. Microscopically, a few cardiomyocytes were replaced by adipocytes, and IHC result was negative

Placental levels of metals and associated factors in urban and sub-urban areas of Seville (Spain).

Environmental exposure to metals among women, revealed their adverse effects on pregnancy. The fetus is exposed to these toxic elements only via the placenta which are able to accumulate there or cross it, compromising the protective functions of this organ. Numerous studies have shown associations between the prenatal exposition to some metals and an impact on cognitive, motor and intellectual development of the child. Sixty two placental samples were taken at delivery to determine the mineral content (Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Sr, V, Zn) by ICP-OES. Among

Ticks and Borrelia in urban and peri-urban green space habitats in a city in southern England.

Ticks are becoming increasingly recognised as important vectors of pathogens in urban and peri-urban areas, including green space used for recreational activities. In the UK, the risk posed by ticks in such areas is largely unknown. In order to begin to assess the risk of ticks in urban/peri-urban areas in southern England, questing ticks were collected from five different habitat types (grassland, hedge, park, woodland and woodland edge) in a city during the spring, summer and autumn of 2013/2014 and screened for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. In addition, seasonal differences in B. burgdor

Increased sensitization in urban vs. rural environment--rural protection or an urban living effect?

In a population-based longitudinal cohort study, we tested the hypothesis that children growing up in a high-traffic polluted urban area (UA) in the Athens' basin have higher prevalence of allergies and sensitization when compared with those growing up in a Greek provincial rural area (RA). We recruited 478 and 342 children aged 8-10 living in the UA and the RA, respectively. Respiratory health was assessed by a parent-completed questionnaire in three phases: 1995-96 (phase 1), 1999-2000 (phase 2), 2003-04 (phase 3) and skin-prick testing to common indoor and outdoor aeroallergens was performe

A decadal urban ecological observations from China: Urban forest environmental change and implications.

Long-term ecological observations are invaluable for studying ecological processes, surprises, and effects. They are equally, if not more, crucial for understanding the science and implications of rapidly urbanizing cities, yet they remain surprisingly rare. Here we establish a long-term ecological observatory network consisting of six forest sites along the urban-rural gradient in Beijing, China (BEON), and present a decade-long analysis of nine environmental indicators from 2013 to 2023. Urbanization imprints a distinct, heterogeneous signature: multi-year means of key factors vary markedly
