BACKGROUND: We tested the hypothesis that uric acid levels are higher in subjects with schizophrenia treated with clozapine than in healthy control and they correlate with anthropometric measurements, laboratory tests and results of bioimpedance analysis of body composition.
METHODS: Data for 24 subjects with schizophrenia treated with clozapine and 24 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers was analyzed.

BACKGROUND: Diuretics are one of the most common causes of severe hyponatremia. The responsible pathogenetic mechanisms remain unclear. Serum uric acid concentration has been proposed as an index of differentiating between two pathophysiologic constructs of diuretic-induced hyponatremia-extracellular volume depletion and syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH)-like state-but its discriminating value has not been verified in large series of patients. Here we attempt to illuminate the pathophysiology of diuretic-induced hyponatremia by focusing on uric acid homeostasis.

We report a 12-month-old boy with renal hypouricemia who presented with crying due to obstructing vesicourethral uric acid stones. Aqueous humor was taken from 32 patients with senile and presenile cataract at the operation by means of anterior chamber puncture. Uric acid was marked by indirect method with uricase. The mean content of uric acid in aqueous humor of patients with cataract was 187.13 mumol/l and in the control group 309.34 mumol/l. The difference between the groups is statistically significant. The results suggest that uric acid as strong endogenous antioxidant may play an important role in pathogenesis of cataract.
