The role of ATP-sensitive potassium channel on acute urinary retention and subsequent catheterization in the rat.

We investigated the role of K(ATP) channel on acute urinary retention (AUR) induced bladder dysfunction. Eight-week-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into seven groups: a sham-operated control group, an AUR group, and five AUR groups treated with: two different K(ATP) channel openers namely nicorandil (3 or 10mg/kg), or cromakalim (100 or 300microg/kg), or one K(ATP) channel inhibitor namely glibenclamide (5mg/kg). The drugs were administered 30min before induction of AUR. After the urethra was obstructed with a clip, AUR was induced by intravesical infusion of 2.5ml of saline via cy

In-out catheterization of young children with suspected urinary tract infection: a retrospective journal study.

It is important that pediatric nurses know that the methods they use are reliable and the most appropriate for the child's security and well being. In-out catheterization is a sterile invasive method to obtain a urine sample in young children. To confirm this as a reliable method, a study of medical records from 61 children ages 0 to 24 months with suspected urinary tract infections (UTIs) was performed. Each child had produced both a urine sample from an adhesive bag and a urine sample from in-out catheterization. Dipsticks were taken from both samples; and the methods were compared with kapp

Use of ultrasonography to identify infants for whom urinary catheterization will be unsuccessful because of insufficient urine volume: validation of the urinary bladder index.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Frequently, attempts to obtain catheter urine samples from infants are unsuccessful because of an empty bladder, with urinary catheterization failure rates reported up to 16%. We seek to validate a sonographic urinary bladder index that will identify patients for whom catheterization will be unsuccessful. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, blinded, observational study enrolling a convenience sample of children younger than 2 years and undergoing urinary catheterization in an urban pediatric emergency department. Failure was defined as a catheterization result of less than 2

Time of catheterization as an independent predictor of early urinary continence recovery after radical prostatectomy.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the potential impact of catheter removal time on immediate and early urinary continence recovery in a series of patients who underwent radical prostatectomy (RP). METHODS: We prospectively collected and analyzed the clinical records of 197 patients who underwent open RP between January 2014 and December 2016. A single surgeon using the urethral fixation technique performed all procedures. Patients receiving surgery between Monday and Wednesday performed a cystogram on postoperative day (POD) 2. Conversely, other cases treated on

Urinary Tract Infection in a Small Animal Model: Transurethral Catheterization of Male and Female Mice.

Urinary tract infections (UTI) are extremely common worldwide, incurring significant morbidity and healthcare-associated expenses. Small animal models, which accurately reflect disease establishment and progression, permit dissection of host-pathogen interactions and generation of immunity to infection. In mice, intravesical instillation of uropathogenic E. coli, the causative agent in more than 85% of community acquired UTI, recapitulates many of the stages of infection observed in humans. Until recently, however, UTI could only be modeled in female animals. This limitation has hindered the s

A comparison of the initial to the later stream urine in children catheterized to evaluate for a urinary tract infection.

BACKGROUND: To avoid potential contamination, it is recommended that the first few drops of urine be discarded when obtaining a catheterized urine sample from a child being evaluated for a urinary tract infection (UTI). The existing evidence to make such a recommendation is scant. Our goal, therefore, was to determine whether the urinalysis, Gram stain, and culture results were significantly different from the initial and later urine samples collected from catheterized children. METHODS: A prospective diagnostic discrimination between early and later urine samples was conducted on a convenien

Impact of clean intermittent self-catheterization and indwelling catheterization on perioperative outcomes in patients with urinary retention undergoing BPH surgery: A comparative monocentric retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: In case of acute urinary retention (AUR) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) first trial without catheter (TWOC) may fail in about 30% of cases. In this situation most of patients have to keep an indwelling catheter (IDC) or to perform clean intermittent self-catheterization (CISC) until surgery. Although CISC has shown several advantages over IDC in neurologic patients, it is barely proposed in case of acute or chronic urinary retention due to BPH and comparative data on the outcomes of BPH surgery are very sparse. The aim of this study was to evaluate peri-

Urinary tract infections and intermittent catheterization among patients with spinal cord injury in Chinese community.

We conducted a cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire to investigate the current status of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and the use of clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) in Chinese community-based SCI patients and to explore the risk factors for UTIs in patients using CIC. Our findings suggest that the prevalence of UTIS is higher in Chinese community-based SCI patients compared with patients in medically developed countries. In addition, we found that CIC had the lower incidence of UTIs than urinary indwelling catheter (UIC) and suprapubic catheter (SPC), and that SCI pa

Urethroplasty with balloon catheterization in fetal lower urinary tract obstruction: observational study of 10 fetuses.

OBJECTIVE: To present the preliminary outcomes of fetal urethroplasty using a coronary angioplasty balloon catheter in lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO). METHODS: We included 10 consecutive male fetuses diagnosed with LUTO caused by presumed isolated posterior urethral valves (PUVs), who underwent urethroplasty with a balloon catheter in our center between 2015 and 2018. During urethroplasty, the fetal urethra was dilated using a balloon catheter (diameter, 0.014 inches; balloon size, 2 × 9 mm) inserted under ultrasonographic guidance via an 18-gauge needle introduced into the fetal blad

Selective strategy for urethral catheterization in febrile young girls to confirm urinary tract infection diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common source of bacterial infections in childhood. Making a proper diagnosis is important but requires invasive urine collection techniques. We aimed to derive a clinical decision rule to identify non-toilet-trained febrile girls at high risk for UTIs to restrict urethral catheterizations (UCs) to this high-risk group of patients. METHODS: We included all non-toilet-trained girls with a positive microscopic urinalysis from urine collected by sterile bag in a prospective cohort study to derive a model to predict UTI assessed by urine culture f

Optimal duration of urinary catheterization after thoracotomy in patients under postoperative patient-controlled epidural analgesia.

BACKGROUND: Epidural analgesia is widely used for efficient pain relief after major surgery. However, it may cause urinary retention, leading to delayed removal of bladder catheters with prolonged patient discomfort. Using a specific regimen in patient controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA), we examined the optimal duration of urinary catheterization in patients undergoing major thoracic surgery. METHODS: Seventy-eight patients scheduled for elective thoracotomy were prospectively randomized into two groups: Group 1, removal of the transurethral catheter on the first postoperative day (n = 38);

Urinary catheterization in labour with high-dose vs mobile epidural analgesia: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Dense perineal block from epidural analgesia increases the risk of urinary catheterization in labour. Mobile epidurals using low-dose local anaesthetic in combination with opioid preserve maternal mobility and may reduce the risk of bladder dysfunction. We conducted a three-arm randomized controlled trial to compare high-dose epidural pain relief with two mobile epidural techniques. METHODS: A total of 1054 primparous women were randomized to receive high-dose bupivacaine, epidural analgesia (Control), combined spinal epidural (CSE), or low-dose infusion (LDI).
