The influence of technology in the field of gambling innovation continues to grow at a rapid pace. After a brief overview of gambling technologies and deregulation issues, this review examines the impact of technology on gambling by highlighting salient factors in the rise of Internet gambling (i.e., accessibility, affordability, anonymity, convenience, escape immersion/dissociation, disinhibition, event frequency, asociability, interactivity, and simulation). The paper also examines other factors in relation to Internet gambling including the relationship between Internet addiction and Intern

Compelling scene movements in a virtual reality (VR) system can cause symptoms of motion sickness (i.e., cybersickness). A within-subject experiment has been conducted to investigate the effects of scene oscillations along different axes on the level of cybersickness. Sixteen male participants were exposed to four 20-min VR simulation sessions. The four sessions used the same virtual environment but with scene oscillations along different axes, i.e., pitch, yaw, roll, or no oscillation (speed: 30 degrees/s, range: +/- 60 degrees). Verbal ratings of the level of nausea were taken at 5-min inter

Neuroprosthetic brain-computer interfaces function via an algorithm which decodes neural activity of the user into movements of an end effector, such as a cursor or robotic arm. In practice, the decoder is often learned by updating its parameters while the user performs a task. When the user's intention is not directly observable, recent methods have demonstrated value in training the decoder against a surrogate for the user's intended movement. Here we show that training a decoder in this way is a novel variant of an imitation learning problem, where an oracle or expert is employed for superv

Facial expression recognition is an important task in real-time human-computer interaction, but its practical application is still limited by partial facial occlusion, high computational cost, and the lack of fine-grained emotion representation. To address these issues, this paper proposes OQ-FERNet, an occlusion-aware quantitative facial expression recognition network. The proposed network adopts MobileNetV4-Conv-S as a lightweight facial expression feature extraction backbone to obtain compact and discriminative representations with low computational cost. On this basis, an Occlusion-aware R

Effective training in functional analysis is essential in applied behavior analysis, yet traditional methods may not include adequate practice opportunities. Researchers evaluated an automated virtual reality (VR) simulation designed to teach novice clinicians to implement functional analysis procedures. Six participants completed immersive VR training with automated prompting followed by baseline probe, feedback, and treatment-extension phases. Two participants achieved mastery through VR training alone, whereas four required brief feedback to reach criterion. Immediate performance improvemen

BACKGROUND: Virtual Reality (VR) generates an artificial environment in which users interact with computer-generated scenarios and sounds. Using devices such as headsets and motion sensors, users are immersed in a simulated world. Augmented reality (AR) is an interactive overlay of the real environment that provides an additional wrapper over the environment, and the user experiences an immersive and interactive environment. In Mixed reality (MR), VR and AR elements are combined; computer graphics interplay with real objects, allowing users to interact with virtual and physical objects at the

The integration of olfactory feedback into Virtual Reality (VR) applications remains significantly underexplored compared with other sensory modalities, particularly within room-scale Cave Automatic Virtual Environments (CAVEs), where related research is even more limited. To address this gap, this paper presents Scentree, a custom olfactory system capable of delivering scents in real time based on user interactions, along with Smelling Ancient Greece, an olfactory-enhanced VR experience developed for integration within our CAVE system. Central to the proposed approach is the concept of the Di

To provide deeper immersion for the user in the virtual environments, both force and torque feedbacks are required rather than the mere use of visual and auditory ones. In this paper, we develop a novel propeller-based Ungrounded Handheld Haptic Device (UHHD) that delivers both force and torque feedbacks in one device to help the user experience a realistic sensation of immersion in a three-dimensional (3-D) space. The proposed UHHD uses only a pair of propellers and a set of sliders to continuously generate the desired force and torque feedbacks up to 15N and 1N.m in magnitude in less than 37

Virtual reality (VR) is a computer-created 3D environment with a focus on realistic scenes and pictures created for entertainment, medical and/or educational and training purposes. One of the major side effects of VR immersion reported in the scientific literature, media and social media is Visually Induced Motion Sickness (VIMS), with clinical symptoms such as disorientation, nausea, and oculomotor discomfort. VIMS is mostly caused by the discrepancy between the visual and vestibular systems and can lead to dizziness, nausea, and disorientation. In this study, we present one potential novel s

BACKGROUND: In recent years, virtual reality (VR) has evolved from an alternative to a necessity in older adults for health, medical care, and social interaction. Upper limb (UL) motor skill, is an important ability in manipulating VR systems and represents the brain's regulation of movements using the UL muscles. In this study, we used a haptic-feedback Virtual Box and Block Test (VBBT) system and an Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) to examine age-related differences in UL motor performance and intrinsic motivation in VR use. The findings will be helpful for the development of VR applicat

INTRODUCTION: Telehealth is an increasingly common approach to improve healthcare delivery, especially within the Veterans Health Administration and Department of Defense (DoD). Telehealth has diminished many challenges to direct access for clinical follow-up; however, the use of mobile telehealth for specialty rehabilitative care is emerging and is referred to as telerehabilitation. As early adopters of telehealth, the Veterans Affairs and DoD have supported collaborated efforts for programs designed to increase the access and quality of rehabilitative care while improving the functional abil

A contact problem of electroadhesion for a conductive elastic body pressed against a rigid plane surface of a dielectric coating covering a conductive substrate is formulated applying the Johnsen-Rahbek approximation for the attractive surface stresses and the Derjaguin-Muller-Toporov (DMT) hypothesis about the influence of the adhesive stresses on the deformable shape of the elastic body. An approximate solution is obtained using the Winkler-Fuss deformation model with the equivalent (contact load dependent) stiffness coefficient evaluated according to the Xydas-Kao soft finger model. BACKGROUND: Spatial orientation is an inherent ability governed by the complex integration of visual, vestibular and proprioceptive inputs. The degree to which an individual relies upon visual cues, as opposed to the vestibular or proprioceptive cues, is termed visual dependence. Although abnormal visual dependence has been documented in other neurological disorders, it is not known whether MS leads to visual dependence, and if so whether this is related to disease progression, clinical disability, or neuro-inflammatory burden in the central nervous system.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate SVV and visu

Injuries, accidents, strokes, and other diseases can significantly degrade the capabilities to perform even the most simple activities in daily life. While assistive technology becomes more and more available to the people affected, there is still a big need for user interfaces suitable for people without functional hand movement. A large share of these cases involves neuromuscular diseases, which lead to severely reduced muscle function. However, even though affected people are no longer able to functionally move their limbs, residual muscle function can still be existent. Previous work has s

Virtual reality (VR) navigation is usually constrained by plausible simulator sickness (SS) and intuitive user interaction. The paper reports on the use of four different degrees of body motion induced navigational VR controllers, a TiltChair, omni-directional treadmill, a manual wheelchair joystick (VRNChair), and a joystick in relation to a participant's SS occurrence and a controller's intuitive utilization. Twenty young adult participants utilized all controllers to navigate through the same VR task environment in separate sessions. Throughout the sessions, SS occurrence was measured from
