Excess dietary vanadium induces the changes of subsets and proliferation of splenic T cells in broilers.

The purpose of this 42-day study was to investigate the effects of dietary excess vanadium on immune function by determining changes of the subsets and proliferation function of splenic T cells. Four hundred twenty 1-day-old avian broilers were divided into six groups and fed on a corn-soybean basal diet as control diet or the same diet amended to contain 5, 15, 30, 45, and 60 ppm of vanadium supplied as ammonium metavanadate. When compared with those of the control group, the percentage of CD3+, CD3+CD4+, and CD3+CD8+ of splenic T cells were decreased in the 45 and 60 ppm groups; however, the

Reference values for chromium, nickel and vanadium in urine of youngsters from the urban area of Rome.

In the assessment of human health risk, the obtainment of reference values in biological tissues and/or fluids is crucial to estimate the type and magnitude of occupational and environmental exposure. In this context, urine is the major excretion route for many noxious substances that have entered the organism and can be viewed as one of the most useful materials for biomonitoring campaigns. In this study, reference concentration ranges for Cr, Ni and V in urine were achieved in a sub-population of 131 youngsters, aged 6-10, attending primary schools in the urban area of Rome. Subjects under d

Charge-state-controlled spin polarization and quantum transport in vanadium-decorated 7-armchair graphene nanoribbons.

Transition-metal functionalization and charge-state engineering provide complementary strategies for tailoring the electronic phases of graphene nanoribbons, yet their cooperative influence on spin polarization, optical response, and quantum transport remains poorly understood. Here, we employ spin-polarized density functional theory combined with nonequilibrium Green's function calculations to systematically investigate vanadium-decorated hydrogen-passivated 7-armchair graphene nanoribbons under varying adsorption coverages and charge states. Increasing vanadium coverage progressively strengt

Capacitive-Dominant Ion Storage in Electronically Coupled Vanadium Hexacyanoferrate/rGO for Efficient Capacitive Deionization Devices.

The rational design of electrodes with hierarchically interconnected porosity and abundant redox-active channels is essential for high-performance capacitive deionization (CDI). Herein, vanadium hexacyanoferrate (VHCF) is integrated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to demonstrate a strongly coupled intercalation-type hybrid electrode that exhibits a pronounced morphological evolution from densely aggregated particles to a rosette-like nanosheet architecture, significantly improving electrolyte accessibility, active-site exposure, and ion-transport pathways. Electronic interaction at the rGO-V

Eco-friendly fabrication of vanadium nanoparticles via Fusarium solani with dual antifungal and anticancer bioactivities.

Nanotechnology is driving significant advancements across medicine, environmental science, and materials engineering. However, conventional nanoparticle synthesis often uses toxic reagents and energy-intensive protocols, raising environmental sustainability concerns. We developed a green, mycosynthesis approach for vanadium nanoparticles (VNPs), employing Fusarium solani as a biological reducing and stabilizing agent. The tolerance index of F. solani was determined using different precursor concentrations. Synthesis was optimized using pH (5.0, 7.0, and 9.0) and temperature (25 °C, 30 °C, and

Alkali-Metal Tuning of Chain Topology and Magnetic Order in V3+-Based Lead Vanadium Fluorides.

Two new V3+-based alkali metal lead fluorides, Na3.6Pb6.4V4F28 and K3.8Pb2.2V4F20, were synthesized via hydrothermal methods derived from the parent compound Pb7V4F26. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that Na3.6Pb6.4V4F28 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1̅, featuring linear V-F-V chains within its structure, whereas K3.8Pb2.2V4F20 adopts the tetragonal space group P42/nmc and features a wavy zigzag chain structure. Magnetic and heat capacity measurements show that Na3.6Pb6.4V4F28 undergoes long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at 19.7 K, whereas K3.8Pb2.2V4F20 develops short

Attenuation of ischemia-reperfusion-induced gastric ulcer by low-dose vanadium in male Wistar rats.

AIM: Vanadium, a trace element found in food and water sources has been previous reported to attenuate ulcer formation without much insight into its mechanism of action. This study highlights the mechanism by which vanadium exhibits its gastro-protective activity. MAIN METHODS: Eighty male Wistar rats (80-100 g) were randomized into 8 equal groups. Groups 1 (control) and 2 (Ulcerated control) received water only, groups 3-8 received vanadium at 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 200 ppm respectively in their drinking water for ten weeks. Gastric ulcer was thereafter induced in groups (2-8) via ischaemia-

Engineering a High-Energy-Density and Long Lifespan Aqueous Zinc Battery via Ammonium Vanadium Bronze.

Aqueous rechargeable zinc batteries (ARZBs) are desirable for energy storage devices owing to their low cost and abundance of the Zn anode, but their further development is limited by a dearth of ideal cathode materials that can simultaneously possess high capacity and stability. Herein, we employ a layered structure of ammonium vanadium bronze (NH4)0.5V2O5 as the cathode material for ARZBs. The large interlayer distance supported by the NH4+ insertion not only facilitates the Zn2+-ion intercalation/deintercalation but also improves the electrochemical stability in ARZBs. As a result, the laye

A functionalized surface modification with vanadium nanoparticles of various valences against implant-associated bloodstream infection.

Bloodstream infection, especially with implants involved, is an often life-threatening condition with high mortality rates, imposing a heavy burden on patients and medical systems. Herein, we firstly deposited homogeneous vanadium metal, V2O3, VO2, and V2O5 nanofilms on quartz glass by magnetron sputtering. Using these platforms, we further investigated the potential antimicrobial efficiency of these nano-VOx films and the interactions of human erythrocytes and bacteria (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) with our samples in a novel cell-bacteria coculture

The vanadium (IV) compound rescues septo-hippocampal cholinergic neurons from neurodegeneration in olfactory bulbectomized mice.

The bilateral olfactory bulbectomy (OBX) mouse exhibits neurodegeneration of cholinergic neurons in the medial septum with concomitant cognitive deficits. Consistent with our previous observations, choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) protein levels in the medial septum decreased by 43.5% 2 weeks after OBX without changes in glutamic acid decarboxylase-65 (GAD65) levels. Interestingly, levels of the vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT), which is localized at cholinergic neuron terminals, decreased both in hippocampal CA1 and CA3 regions following OBX. Confocal microscopy showed that VAChT e

Spectrophotometric determination of vanadium(V) in minerals, steels, soil and biological samples using phenothiazine derivatives.

Two simple, rapid and sensitive spectrophotometric methods have been proposed for the determination of vanadium(V) using butaperazine dimaleate (BPD) and propionyl promazine phosphate (PPP). These methods are based on the formation of red-colored radical cations on reaction with vanadium(V) in phosphoric acid medium, with their absorbance maxima at 513 nm. Beer's law is valid over the concentration range of 0.25-5.0 micrograms ml-1 and 0.2-4.0 micrograms ml-1, with Sandell's sensitivity values of 6.1 ng cm-2 and 6.0 ng cm-2 for BPD and PPP respectively. The proposed methods have been successfu

Prevention by sodium 4,5-dihydroxybenzene-1,3-disulfonate (Tiron) of vanadium-induced behavioral toxicity in rats.

Recent studies have shown that oral vanadate (V5+) administration results in behavioral toxicity in rats. The chelating agent Tiron (sodium 4,5-dihydroxybenzene-1,3-disulfonate) is an effective antidote in the removal of vanadium from vanadium-loaded rats. In this study, the protective activity of Tiron on vanadate-induced behavioral toxicity was evaluated in adult rats. Intraperitoneal treatment with Tiron at 235 or 470 mg/kg was initiated after 6 wk of oral sodium metavanadate administration (16 mg/kg/d) and continued for 2 wk. Although vanadate exposure did not result in a significant reduc

Superior fast-charging performance and prolonged lifespan of sodium vanadium phosphate via compositionally complex doping.

The commercial viability of polyanionic Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) cathodes in sodium-ion batteries is critically hampered by its intrinsically low electronic conductivity and structural degradation upon prolonged cycling. Herein, we break the conventional equal-ratio multi-element doping paradigm and propose an asymmetric multi-element doping strategy at the vanadium site, yielding a composition of Na3V1.5Cr0.4(Ti,Al,Mg,Y,Zr)0.1(PO4)3 (HE-NVP). This design establishes a clear synergistic division of labor: Cr3+, with an ionic radius closely matched to V3+, serves as the primary electronic modulator to

Resonance-Enhanced Four-Wave Mixing Imaging for Mapping Defect Regions in Vanadium-Doped WS2 Monolayers.

Defect engineering is crucial for tuning 2D transition metal dichalcogenide properties for quantum and optoelectronic applications. While conventional photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectroscopies are important characterization tools, their mapping in large area samples can be time-consuming and lacks direct sensitivity for comprehensive defect characterization. Here, we introduce resonance-enhanced four-wave mixing (FWM) imaging for precise imaging and characterization of vanadium-induced defect states in WS 2 monolayers. Our multi-modal investigation, integrating hyperspectral PL, Raman,

Atomically thin vanadium oxide nanosheets via top-down exfoliation for ultrafast-charging zinc-ion batteries.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are a promising energy storage solution due to their high safety, environmental friendliness and low cost. Although the high ionic conductivity of aqueous electrolytes and fast kinetics of zinc plating/stripping hold promise for fast discharge/charge processes, the rate capability of AZIBs remains limited due to poor ion and electron transport in cathode materials. This study addresses this challenge by developing atomically thin vanadium oxide nanosheets (∼2 nm thickness) through a top-down exfoliation strategy using bulk ZnV6O16·nH2O. Driven by small-molecul

Mineral-supported microbial functional differentiation across a vertical gradient in a vanadium-titanium magnetite mine.

Vanadium-titanium magnetite (VTM) mines are often associated with metal contamination, organic carbon depletion, and ecological degradation, yet how indigenous microbiomes respond to vertical geochemical heterogeneity remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated a ∼260 m vertical gradient in the Zhulan Iron Mine, China, by integrating elemental and mineralogical analyses with 16S rRNA gene amplicon and metagenomic profiling. Pronounced vertical stratification was observed. The lower-elevation section was enriched in vanadium (V) and Fe(II)-bearing minerals and harbored microbial communitie

Vanadium-Vacancy-Induced Atomically Polarized Heterojunctions for Synergistic Bioenergetic Pathogen Disruption and Peripheral Nerve Regeneration.

Drug-resistant bacterial infections and persistent oxidative stress severely impair nerve endings in burn wounds, presenting a formidable clinical challenge. Current treatment modalities generally fail to achieve simultaneous pathogenic eradication and neuro-regeneration. Here, we design vanadium-vacancy-induced atomically polarized V2C/VSe2 heterojunctions (V2R-HJs) to drive bioenergetic pathogen disruption and peripheral nerve regeneration. Vanadium-vacancy-boosted atomic-level charge polarization enables V2R-HJs to form potent Lewis acid-base pairs to capture electrons and protons, exerting

Controllable Configuration of Constitutional Units in Vanadium/Iron-Based Polyanionic Compounds for Sodium-Ion Storage.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are considered one of the most promising next-generation energy storage solutions. Among various electrode materials, vanadium/iron-based polyanionic compounds show significant potential as SIB cathodes due to their stable structures and high operating voltages, yet challenges persist in electron/Na+ transport and energy density. Although doping is an effective solution, the structure-activity relationship between dopant-induced configuration of octahedral/tetrahedral units and electrochemical performance remains poorly understood. Herein, the effects of composition
