[Clinical evaluation of a hydro-cellular dressing for the treatment of venous leg ulcers].

INTRODUCTION: Varicose ulcers (UV) are a serious health problem which produce tremendous pain for those who suffer from them; furthermore, they consume a large amount of health care system resources. Hydro-cellular dressings provide a moist environment cure option as a local treatment of varicose ulcers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: With the purpose of evaluating the use of an Allevyn non-adhesive hydro-cellular dressing under real clinical conditions, an open, observational multi-centric study was carried out. The study group was composed of outpatient care patients or patients hospitalized due to

[Diagnosis of varicose disease].

DIAGNOSIS OF VARICOSE DISEASE. Varicose vein disease corresponds anatomically to an alteration of the venous wall and/or the valve system of one or more superficial veins, or segments of these veins, and is characterized by reflux causing venous hypertension. The clinical signs, precisely described by the CEAP classification (clinical, etiological, anatomical, pathophysiological), include aside asymptomatic forms, telangiectasias, varicose veins, edema, and skin disorders up to the stage of leg ulcers. The functional signs, also very variable and sometimes absent, are not limited to leg heavin

Minimally invasive Ayurveda management of recurrent and acute-on-chronic non-healing venous leg ulceration - a Case Report.

Slow healing and recurrent venous leg ulcers resulting from varicose veins due to lower limb chronic venous insufficiency are common vascular complications. If left untreated, they may lead to severe outcomes such as hemorrhage and, in extreme cases, limb amputation. We report the case of a 61-year-old male with bilateral lower limb varicosities of 10 years' duration, presenting with multiple painful venous leg ulcers that recurred several months after phlebectomy due to patient non-compliance. Physical examination revealed exquisitely tender, exudative, irregular-bordered, multiple shallow ul

Retrograde mechanochemical ablation of the small saphenous vein for the treatment of a venous ulcer.

We present the first case of retrograde ablation of the small saphenous vein to treat active venous ulceration. A 73-year-old gentleman with complicated varicose veins of the left leg and a non-healing venous ulcer despite previous successful endovenous treatment to his left great saphenous vein underwent mechanochemical ablation of his small saphenous vein with the ClariVein® system, under local anaesthetic, using a retrograde cannulation technique. Post-operatively the patient had improved symptomatically and the ulcer size had reduced. This report highlights that patients with small sapheno

The relationship between the number of capillaries in the skin of the venous ulcer-bearing area of the lower leg and the fall in foot vein pressure during exercise.

The changes in foot vein pressure during exercise have been measured in 30 normal legs and 109 legs with varicose veins or postphlebitic changes and correlated with the number of capillaries visible in a histological section of skin from the ulcer-bearing area. There was a significant correlation between the inability of the calf pump to reduce foot vein pressure during exercise and the number of capillaries in the skin. It is suggested that the increased number of capillaries secondary to venous hypertension during exercise may be the prime cause of the nutritional abnormalities that eventual

Treatment Patterns and Outcomes in Patients with Varicose Veins.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 24% of adults in the United States have visible varicose veins, and an estimated 6% have evidence of advanced chronic venous disease. The majority of individuals with varicose veins seek treatment because of symptoms, such as aching, throbbing, fatigue, pruritus, ankle swelling, and tenderness, rather than cosmetic reasons. Furthermore, varicose veins are a manifestation of chronic venous insufficiency, which can progress to leg pain, leg edema, chronic skin changes, and nonhealing ulcers. OBJECTIVE: To assess varicose vein treatment patterns and their corresponding

Unusual death due to a bleeding from a varicose vein: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Varicose veins are a common entity presenting a worldwide distribution. Although they are usually benign, sometimes are proved to be a threatening condition. Massive hemorrhage is an unusual complication of this common venous pathology that demands immediate medical intervention. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 66-year-old woman found dead in her house surrounded by a large quantity of blood. Autopsy revealed a 7 mm ulcer on the internal surface of the left lower leg communicating with a varicose vein, signs of exsanguinations and liver cirrhosis. Toxicological analysis

Congenital absence of inferior vena cava and thrombosis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: A congenitally absent Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) is a rare anomaly that is recognised to be associated with idiopathic Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT), particularly in the young. It may not be apparent until later in life. Retrospectively, as discussed in this case, there can be clues indicating the presence of such an anomaly from a young age. However, it is not clear whether early recognition of this condition would affect the prognosis and treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 54 year old gentleman was admitted with 3 weeks of abdominal pain and localised swelling over the right flank.

[New methods of managing massive upper gastrointestinal bleedings (author's transl)].

A four year experience in the management of 585 patients with massive upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding (U. G. I. B.)has been reviewed. The effect of routine fiberoptic gastroscopy, selective angiography, and selective pitressin arterial infusion has been analyzed as it effects the more accurate diagnosis and better non-operative therapy of these dangerously ill patients. Duodenal and gastric ulcer, which comprise one-half of such patients, are best treated by early operation. Mallory-Weiss-syndrome is more frequent than previously appreciated. Pitressin infusion is worthy of trial in diff

Pharmacological agents in the treatment of venous disease: an update of the available evidence.

Varicose veins and the complications of venous disease are thought to affect over a quarter of the adult population and the management of these conditions are a major cause of health service expense. Advances in the understanding of venous pathophysiology have highlighted numerous potential targets for pharmacotherapy. This review considers the evidence for pharmacological agents used for the treatment of chronic venous disease. A literature search using Pubmed, Embase and Cinahl databases was performed. The initial search terms 'varicose vein', 'venous ulcer' and 'venous disease' were used wi
